IMBA's new fundraising program - dubbed Team IMBA (http://go.imba.com/site/TR?pg=entry&fr_id=1040) - made a successful debut at the 24 Hours of Moab (http://www.grannygear.com/Races/Moab/index.shtml) event this October. After months of arduous training leading up to the event, participants formed four- and five-person squads (plus two solo entries) and tested themselves by riding laps on a demanding 15-mile course.
While the world-renown race poses a serious challenge for any mountain biker, Team IMBA riders enjoyed every advantage. The "Camp IMBA" support area was luxuriously equipped, including hot meals prepared by the Western Spirit (http://www.westernspirit.com/) bike touring company, top-notch light systems provided by NiteRider (http://www.niterider.com/) and between-lap massages from Boulder-based therapist Molly Bockman. A crew of professional bike mechanics also kept chains lubed and shifters dialed throughout the race.
The result? Team IMBA participants raised more than $15,000 - and had a blast doing it. Better yet, several riders found their way to the podium: Lisse Daugaard-Gordon nabbed an impressive third in the women's solo class, and the Crawling Spider Girls (Cimarron Chacon, Kim Christensen, DJ Morrisette and Courtney Frost) matched that result in the Women's Sport category.
Petition for Moab Singletrack
Throughout the race weekend, hundreds of participants dropped by Camp IMBA to sign pre-addressed postcards and a petition asking the Bureau of Land Management to consider adding more singletrack trails in the Moab area. "The advocacy element was another successful component of the Team IMBA presence," says IMBA Events Coordinator Patti Bonnet. "We're especially grateful to race organizer Laird Knight, who delivered a rousing address urging riders to get involved with IMBA."
FOX Racing Shox (http://www.foxracingshox.com/fox_bicycle/bike_index.htm) pitched in and helped generate buzz for the Moab petition by donating a F120 RLC fork for a drawing. "I'm so excited about the FOX fork," raved winner Paul Rakowski, of Denver, CO. "It was great to see a strong presence from IMBA at the race - I really hope the BLM gets behind the motion to add much-needed singletrack in Moab!
What the Riders Are Saying
"The magic of the event was more than one day. It was the teambuilding, the fundraising, the goal setting and the anticipation. But once we were at the venue, it was about living in the moment and giving it all we had."
- Cimarron Chacon (St. George, UT)
"IMBA did a great job organizing everything for the race. Info was easy to get, and everyone from the staff was very friendly and always willing to help out or answer a question. I feel like that's a large part of being at an event like the 24/Moab - the race is going to be hard enough, so being in good company can really make or break your experience. I felt like I was with a bunch of old friends. I never felt like an outsider. There was a great sense of family from the entire crew."
- Travis Williams (Richmond, VA)
"The online tools were great. It was a very robust training and fundraising program leading up to the race. Having the workouts e-mailed simplified my preperations. Once again, I can't thank IMBA enough for the great time this weekend. We've got to do this again soon!"
- Thomas Bentil (Brooklyn, NY)
