A controlled bow-hunt will be held in Lebanon Hills Regional Park on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from Oct. 29 through Nov. 14. The trail is not open for riding until noon on those dates.

They typically put up signs and will not allow non-hunters access to the lot during those times.

Please beware if you enter on the Galaxie side... I don't believe there are signs there.

There are signs in the lot. I was there at 11:35am this morning and they were no cars. Figured I would hit Salem instead of waiting around.

Notice to all trail poachers:

While you are never encouraged to ride on a closed trail, this would be the best time to do so. The only requirement is that you wear a helmet with antlers attached to it and tie a white towel to the back of your seat.

Fine Print:
This was written sarcastically. Never ride a closed trail, especially with antlers on your helmet and a white towel attached to the back of your seat in an area with hunters.

Reasonable chance that there were still hunters in there. They may have gotten there before the gate was open. (Even though they are not allowed to shoot before sunrise, hunters often want to get there early and not spook little Bambi.)

So why did the bow hunter show up last night 5 mins before the lot closed? Left the lot on time but his mini van was still there. Was a little creepy. Didn't feel like getting shot at so I didn't talk to him.

I like to give a few more hours past noon before heading into the trail... for those hunters who aren't aware of their time limits or aren't wearing a watch.

Does this mean that we might find gut piles on the trail?

Legal shooting hours are 30 minutes before sunrise and usually they'd want to setup and get settled 30 minutes to an hour before shooting opens. With a 7.40 sunrise, shooting starts at 7.10 and they'd be in there stand and quiet by say 6.30ish. Most deer movement stops though 2-3 hours after day break and a lot of hunters will pack it in by 9 or 10.

In respect to the archery hunters, they're not gun toting, deer slaughtering guys like I commonly joke about. I've never heard of a guy getting arrowed because most archers won't shoot beyond 50 yards unlike a firearms hunters round that can travel for miles. Archery hunting is an art and they're providing a great service to the park. Please be respectful to these guys.

Haven't found any 'leftovers' at Battle Creek after their hunts yet.

Is it safe today? I dont see leb dates on the front page, just murphy. I want to ride after work but don't want an arrow in my arse.

The first post in this thread shows the dates and times to beware....

If you ride after 1pm you have nothing to worry about.

ah yes, my finger was too lazy to scroll down there to look - sorry.

Good deal, much better than uncontrolled hunting, just randomly shooting and hoping something sticks;)

The ignorance of some of these"i dont want to get shot with an arrow" posts make me wonder how some of you manage to stay upright on a bike...

Because clearly wanting everyone to be safe and not get in the hunters way = not being able to balance? :p

when was the last time a MTB'er was shot with an arrow in leb?

Luckily I believe it has never happened... and as long as we keep warning people to stay out of there when its going on, we'll hopefully keep it that way.

Point being, why chance it. You are only going to annoy the hunters by being in there when you aren't supposed too.. or worse, annoy our land manager because even more of our kind can't follow simple rules.

Nobody here is really being THAT overly serious about this anyway... just being safe and following the rules is all...

The DNR were hauling deads out at 12:30pm when I got there. On my ride I encountered 3 does and I stopped and to let one walk by and two others came up and all three circled me 2 times in a 6 ft diameter circle just looking at me (it was weird and close enough to freak me out a little). Anyway it was about the coolest thing I ever encountered riding anywhere. My guess is they thought I was an upright deer or something like that because I had brown baggies on and my brown Cannondale Prophet DH jersey on.

To the deaf rider I met up with. It was nice seeing you out there, if you are reading this, PM me so we can ride together again sometime.

Those 3 does were probably in heat. :)

Yeah, and they probably felt bad for you because you were missing your right front leg....

I rode up to a deer a few weeks back and stopped about 10 feet from him (or her). It started to snort and scratch it's front feet on the ground at me. I thought it was mad, but someone told me that's what they do when they are ready to... you know...

I guess that explains why it winked at me when I rode off...

Are you talking about a deer or bow hunter?

Hey John, she meant 5 min before the lot closes (9:55PM) This was on Tue night. We watched him pull in, take out his gear (bow) and walk into the woods. http://www.tcstangs.com/forum/images/smilies/Oogle_anim.gif

Seems a bit odd. I'm not completely sure what the hunting regulations are but I'm guessing he wasn't supposed to be in there at that time since the entire park is closed at 10pm.

Doesn't have the rules, but here is the announcement and application from the county website:

http://www.co.dakota.mn.us/LeisureRecreation/ActiviesFacilities/ResourceManagment/DeerManagment.htm

http://www.co.dakota.mn.us/NR/rdonlyres/000012d3/vhbaetfhcmoxihzwfjxceycvffunfypu/2007HuntAppLHRP.pdf

Looks like they have a special use permit and sign an ethics agreement.

Typical rules ar 1/2 hour before sunrise and up to 1/2 hour after sunset.
Rule one from the linked page:
1. Hunting is allowed from ½ hour before sunrise until 10:00 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and
Wednesday mornings from October 29, 2007, through November 14, 2007.

Seems like there is no hunting past 10AM. This makes it sound to me like the person going IN at 9:55PM was in the wrong.

Maybe they are allowed free access at any time for their scouting, camping or whatever hunters need to do?
I can't believe if he was going to violate the rules, he would be dumb enough to just park in the lot but maybe I'm wrong.

I'd agree, that sounds odd to a point. I don't know of any law on the books on when you can start setting up your tree stand, etc. Many people go in a 2-3 in the morning to many pieces of state land but since Leb has posted hours, the hours could mean 1 of 2 things:

1.) shooting hours are from 5 to 10am, this would be a change to state law, which has been done before but is somewhat uncommon.

2.) Access hours to the area are from 5 to 10am and shooting hours follow state law, which is how I would precieve the posting.

Has anyone talked to or asked the land manager?

Why would you need a bow to scout?

You can take your bow with you before legal hunting hours but it must be in a case.

I know this is an old post on here, but thought I would clear it up for you guys. The hunter should not have been in the park at those hours, they are allowed to scout, but during regular park hours. He should not have had a bow with him.
