So, what tires do you guys like to shred Hillside?

I ride a full suspension with disc brakes and 26" wheels.

I like to use giant knobby tires, but they weigh more and roll like crap.:D A good choice would be the Small Block Eight's (http://www.kendausa.com/bicycle/JohnTomac.html). Kenda, John Tomac signature series. Very popular tire with the 'expert' crowd. Lightweight, low rolling resistance, good traction. Hillside is mostly hardpack so they work well. Personally I use the Maxxis Ignitor's (http://www.maxxis.com/products/bicycle/product_detail.asp?id=110). Bigger knobs and further spacing between them gives you much more traction in the loose and uneven stuff. Especially tree roots. They weigh a little less than the SB8's, (SB8=780g/Ignitor=609g & both 26x1.95 tubeless) but the rolling resistance is higher. That's the trade off for better traction. Both come in tubeless and standard style.

Have fun!

Are you racing at Hillside (http://www.morcmtb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=23111) tomorrow?

That's very difficult to answer. I don't know if there is a correct answer. It needs to be determined for each tire on each surface, while also considering that every rider has their own preferences. In other words, what ever you think is right... is right. It really is a preference deal. You can compensate for one with the other to a certain extent. Just find a combination that works for you and stick with it. I like to go to a trail where I can repeat a long section several times. Set the air pressure very high, like 50psi, and do a lap. Then set it very low, ~25psi or as low as you can go with out getting a pinchflat, and do a lap. Note the differences and then set 10psi different than whichever of the first two you liked more. Go from there.

I've used Specialized adrenaline, roll x pros, fast trac pros, Jones xc's. My lap times were about the same on all of the tires. If you aren't super fast, tires must not really matter??

I haven't raced in two years now. Injuries and life took over, but maybe someday I will be able to get in some races. Hillside is a great site for races, I have good memories from there. I hope this weekend went smooth.

I have used Hutch Spider lites and they seem to work the best at hillside. I like the look of the Maxxis Igniter-thanks for the tip Rich.

I ride Theo a lot and it seems like any tires work there-it's mostly hard pack with no loose stuff. It seems that if I find a tire to handle Hillside's diverse terrain then they will work anywhere.

I used this exact same setup a couple years ago when I used one bike for everything (DH and XC). It actually is a pretty good setup. I bought the absolute widest tire that would fit in the fork, and the widest tire that would fit in the rear triangle. Funny how a 2.5 from one manufacturer will fit back there, and one from another won't. I think I still have some Mobster's around...
