Do to a lack of ridders wanting to ride the whole ride I have decided to change it. We will now drive to each trail.

I would like to keep the order the same ..........

Battle Creek-Salem Hills-Lebanon-Murphy Hanrehan-River Bottoms-Theodore Wirth- maybe on to another trail after that.

I say we meet at Battle Creek at 9:00am and go from there. Every one is welcomed to ride any or every trail. We can even plan a good lunch spot to all meet at.

I hope to have a good turn out for this.

Anyone wanting to carpool post up.

This should be more fun !?!?!?!?

I forgot to mention ........

If you ride a trail enough that you can lead the trail speak up. Itwould be nice to have some one at each trail to show those of us who havent been there around.

Travis,
I think changing the ride is a good idea. More people will show up especially if the weather is good. I will try to make a couple of the rides. I'll try to estimate the departure times. Also, I assume that with people riding between rides that you don't need a SAG vehicle, which is good as I volunteered to drive SAG and I have a party that I would like to go to on Saturday night.

I'm fine either way.

In a weird kind of way, I was sort-of looking forward to the grueling mega-ride, but agree that it'll be more fun and better turnout skipping the road portions. Plus, that'll let me ride the comfortable bike rather than the faster one.

I'll volunteer to lead the Leb portion, and can also lead Salem and Murphy if you are stuck for people that know those trails well.

I was in either way, but I want this to be a big, fun, comfortable ride that everyone can partake in. In fact I talked to a few folks during the urban ride on Saturday, and they expressed interest in this new format.
Travis, I think that this ride was a great idea, but with all of the other scheduled events pushing the ride date back so far, we just ran out of mojo. I can take one other rider with me.

you are all a bunch of nancies..... well maybe not, I'm glad someone flinched before I had to. I was really looking forward to this but we probobaly will have a better turn out with it being a mega tour instead of ride. Now I might even be able to go out and party that night.:banana:

I posted this in another thread but just to cover all my bases, do you have to have lights to do this?

kabbie_cache
10-08-2007, 02:24 PM
I would think that this would be mostly day ridding, unless we hit a couple more trails, then maybe you would need lights.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Something I was thinking about today ...

At the River Bottoms, is that normaly down and back, or do you leave a car/cars at both ends ?

Any idea on how many miles it'll be now?

I think its between 35-40 miles. I think it will be about 5/6 hours of ridding, depends on how fast you ride. Although this will not be a hammer fest.
Remember you get to rest between trails now.

Driving is NOT resting. You have to stay alert, pay attention, and always be ready for anything. Similar to biking.

I'm fine with it either way, although...LOL, I've been getting all geared up and more likely to move to "confirmed" status and was hoping to pull off the Mega Ride.

Can we start a bit earlier though? Perhaps sometime between 7:30 and 8:30? 9 seems a bit late to get going, especially since 9 really means 9:30 with a group this size.

We'll definitely get more people this way, so that's good, but we'll have to make sure that next year we plan it for an earlier time so we can still try to pull off the incredible feat of doing all trails (including TO) and riding to each trail.

From what I know, the year before last a number of people did a ride like this in more of this year's "touring" format (i.e., driving to each trail). Last year we rode to each of the trails in what we called the "Tour de Trails". If we do it this way this year, perhaps next year we can ride to all the trails and establish an every-other year tradition alternating between the two.

What do ya'll think?

Sevadari
10-09-2007, 01:25 PM
I'm guessing that the other Mega-ride threads were all collapsed into this one (is that what the sign with the exclamation point means?).

Just for those who might be interested in reading about last year's "Tour de Trails" (and in response to Shad's smack talk in one of the deleted threads;)), there were indeed 5 of us last year that followed through on the talk and rode to each of the trails (87 miles total).

You can read about it in both these threads:

I should have made that more clear. I had planned on leaving the lot to start the ride at 9:00am. Not meet at 9:00am.

If enough people want an earlier start we might be able to do it. I just dont want to start in the dark at BC with people that dont ride there much.

I would say that since we are now driving to all of the trails, that we should be able to hit all of them. Might be fun to save Battle Creek for last, and make it a night ride, or wherever we end up riding last.

I am tentatively planning on trying this.

One problem is that I don't have a bike rack for my car. I don't really want to stuff the bike into my trunk 5 times.

My other problem is that the only trail i've ridden is Wirth.

I am planning on doing this. I have an F250 4 door pickup. I have a 4 bike hitch rack and a bar for the tail gate that hold two bikes, with front wheels off. I don't like putting 4 bikes on the rack, cause they are hard to fit. Unless they are all the same bike, maybe that would work, but never experienced that. So, I would be able to haul a few bikes and people around, since we don't get to bike the whole thing.

I'm pretty sure I'll be doing the ride now and plan on doing all the trails. My brother in law may be joining too for all or most of the trails.

I'm game for pretty much any order on the trails. I've ridden all of them except Battle Creek (so it'll be nice to go with someone that knows it).

Only issue for me at this point is lights, so my vote is to get started riding by latest 8:30 am (8:00 meet up) or maybe even earlier. Not only will it give us a little more wiggle room for breaks, trail transfers, etc., but since we're doing Battle Creek I'd like to see it during daylight hours.

If this is all the turnout we end up getting...maybe we can go back to the original plan :etard: !

If I can swing the family car I could probably take another rider (and bike) or two.

Ride starts from Battle Creek some time after 8:00 on Sat 27 October 2007???

Please Clarify.

October 27th is correct. I plan on being at Battle Creek about 8:00am and to start ridding no later than 9:00am. If everyone on the list shows up before 9:00 we will start then.

If anyone plans to meet us at other trails I could text or call when we head out to that trail. If any are intrested in this pm me.

Question about the river bottoms ......
Not sure if everyone wants to do the down and back or leave a few cars at one end and shuttle drivers back to thier cars.

Stella's is a bar in uptown with a party that night.

I will be at BC at 8:00 8:30. Plan to start riding as soon as everyone is there and ready to go 9:00 or before.

I dont think lights will be needed unless you want to do more trails than what are on the tour.

As far as preparations go ??????? Make sure your will is up to date. LOL

I would say just have plenty of snacks and fluids. Also be ready for the chilly temps.

It would mean that you would have to have some kind of lights.

I'd prefer the original plan instead of moving Battle Creek to the last trail.

I now might need to bail out around 4:30ish due to some family commitments that have come up. Nothing against Theo Wirth (ridden it many times and love it), but...I'd rather start off riding Battle Creek since I've never been able to ride it yet.

However, if others would prefer to finish up at BC instead, no sweat, I'll just cut out when I need to.

How hilly is BC anyway? How does it compare with Murphy or Leb?

Just curious since I've never ridden it.

~300 vertical feet from the lowest point in the park to the highest. It is pretty easy to put together a loop that is 1000+ feet of climbing. Next to Afton the hilliest of the metro trails.

Thanks. Unfortunately I haven't yet ridden Afton. :cryin:

Anyone more familiar with Leb and/or Murphy care to compare the overall vertical climb and general hilliness to what's listed here for BC?

How about a quick comparison of features and difficulty? I've ridden both of these other trails plenty and read the descriptions of all in the trail guide...just trying to get a more overall comparison.

Seems like BC might be a bit more like Murphy than Leb, is that right?

Thanks!

Tomg
10-23-2007, 09:00 PM
Hard to make comparisons.... it's just a lot different than Leb. Much more difficult and intense climbing, and just more of it. No "features" except what Mother Nature has provided. i.e. no log piles, ladders, teeters, rock gardens, jumps etc. (I guess the new wall ride at the foundations counts as a "feature" ;)) But there are some nasty/challenging root drops and gnarly rocky downhills.

Because the park is on a river bluff the trails tend to be much more linear than Leb with the trails following the bluff contour lines. Probably only 1/2 the trails conform to IMBA standards and with the sandy soil we have to work with, the trails are a lot less buffed than Leb. Bottom line... If you can ride X loop at Leb you can ride anything at BC from a technical challenge point of view (with the possible exception of Wall of Death)... assuming your lungs don't burst 1st. :crazy2:

Other comments???

I love BC! I love the natural feel to it. I like that style of trail (rocky/rooty/hilly) and the little taste of going down here and there. The climbs can be challenging but not brutal like afton. The same reasons i'm in love with hillside. Don't get me wrong...i like leb but its nice to have variety. :)

Starting at the Blomington Ferry side. Some have suggestions -- to the raft and back, oneway and shuttle people back to cars or do a down and back.

I think we will just see how everyone feels when we get there.

I'm not too familiar with the area, but last year we ate at a Subway on Cliff Drive just East of Johnny Cake Dr. on the north side of the road.

It was quick, easy, cheap and a good location. We will have cars this time, so others might want to consider some other options though. Also, given the time of day and where we'll be in the line up of trails I'd guess we would want to eat after we do Leb.

My vote is for the Subway on Cliff Drive since its so convenient. I'm not trying to hurry the day along, but it'd be nice if we didn't take too long for lunch. We're going to get cold and stiff enough from the car rides inbetween the trails, we don't need extra help in that department from an extra long lunch stop.

My 2 cents.

Turn right on Upper Afton Road and drive to Winthrop Street.

It would probobaly be good if we had a contact person that anyone could contact to find out the status of the ride. I will step up to the plate and through out my # if anyone wants to join up part way but are not sure about when we will be at a particular trail they can call me 320-493-2262

I paln on making more than just one lunch stop, the best way to fuel for a ride like this is to eat smaller meals more often as oppossed to having one big lunch. That way you have a nice even energy level throughout the whole day, and then you aren't ever riding on a full stomach.

I plan on bring food along for the ride, I agree with Noah that eating smaller meals is the way to go... Fast food will kill me if I go that route, even subway. I am thinking PB&J sandwich's and things like that. Looks like the weather is going to hold, I am looking forward to this ride. I will be joining at Salem and hopefully doing the rest.

But if anyone needs some chain lube, I still have a nose full of it.

I left a ton of it along side the trail at Salem Wed. night. Nose has been clear ever since:banana:

If needs be, can anyone give me (and my bike) a ride from Murphy to River Bottoms and River Bottoms to Theo Wirth?

Not sure if my brother in law's going to need to cut out early or not.

Thanks!

Do you guys have an ETA for when you'll be at each trail? I can probably figure it out if I try really hard, but I'm lazy. I may try to hit Leb and Murph (maybe Theo if it's not too late) with you guys. IF (that's a big IF) I finish my homework tonight.

oh jeez, I forgot River Bottoms in there, too. Well, hell, I should do that one for sure, I haven't ridden there since last summer. Whoopsy.

The connector trail at Battle Creek has been completed. Could have used a little more rain to firm it up, but it's rideable.

Awesome Shawn!!

Think any of the trails got too much rain today? I see Pete posted Theo will need a few hours of daylight, and probably shouldn't be riden in the am. Any other trails get to wet?

Hey, two more for-sure riders. We'll be at Battle Creek start by around 8:15 and be ready to ride shortly thereafter.

Dress warm, people. Looking forward to meeting you all.

We can lead at Murphy if we aren't too slow.

Done! 21 people at the peak, finished with 5. We lucked out and got nice weather.

According to Paul (aka Ken for those of us that can't remember names), it was somewhere around 47 miles of fun. 6 trails, all ridden in their entirety.

For me, the worst part was Murphy, where in addition to feeling awful, my stomach was trying to hold down: 2 bottles of Gatorade, a quart of chocolate milk, 2 bananas, a deep fried KFC gut bomb sandwich, and part of a gas station sandwich. All consumed within about a 10 minute period. It was all I could do to keep from heaving.

I was going to call it a day, but fortunately, by the time we got to the river bottoms, I started feeling okay again.

Anyway, it was a nice stupid way to kill a Saturday. Travis, thanks a lot for setting this up and keeping us going. Congratulations to all of us.

I am feeling pretty good today. If I do squats, I can tell my thighs are stiff. Probably wouldn't be too quick on a bike today, not that I am ever really quick.

Having the River bottoms after Murphy was fabulous. No hills, just smooth riding. and, Theo in the dark was a lot of fun.

Good pictures so far Travis. Hope your pain goes away soon.

Travis, thanks for putting this together...a real fun time indeed!

Even though I had to cut out after Leb it was great meeting new people and riding some awesome trails on a beautiful day.

LOL, I didn't figure out until just before Leb that my front disc pad was rubbing the whole time!!! :banghead: I thought I had it worked out half way through BC when my brakes were squealing...little did I know that I was still getting resistance from the "adjustment" I tried to make the night before the ride!!!

Congrats to those that finished all 6 trails. :metal:

...now I just have to decide if I want to sign up for MySpace.

If you sign up for myspace and are not hip, then edit your profile right away and go through the privacy/spam options. In the hour since I signed up, I already (before editing my options) got a couple messages and a new friend. It must be because I'm so sexy.

Sorry world, I turned off all the contact stuff now.

I thought i'd need a couple of days to recover, especially considering my knees started bothering me at Murphy (20 miles is probably my limit riding a small bike) but I felt good enough today to play some pickup bball!

Can't wait for the next Mega Tour! OK, that's a lie, I can wait...
