Let the planning and discussion begin!
"Lucky Thirteen"
Fruita & the world are ready for the 13th Annual Fat Tire Festival - "Lucky Thirteen".
Sunshine, Singletrack, Live Music, Products displayed from the best in the Bike Industry, the ever welcoming Beer Garden, the clunker crit and more are what you can expect from the 13th Annual New Belgium Brewing Co Fruita Fat Tire Festival presented by US Bank.
Bring a bike, a smile and a "dirty dozen" of your friends and join us April 24-27 for a time to remember of MTB fun in the sun.
If that isn't enough for you stick around for the 4th Annual 18 Hours of Fruita endurance race the following weekend, May 2 & 3; the famous Midnight start, all Singletrack course and grass Camping at Highline Lake State Park make this a good time even if it involves way too much riding . Join us for one of the most social and entertaining races on the endurance calender.

I believe a trip like this should be planned over numerous beers at OC.........maybe after a Thursday night snowshoe stomp........that way when we wake up the next day and are actually in Arizona it will all make much more sense...... ;)

Very possible for me. This year, I'd like to do a few more days in Moab before heading to Fruita.
I will just be getting back from there a two weeks earlier,
Need to practice on the big rocks.

No offense, but it sounds like you need a girlfriend with a different birthday, or one that doesn't mind celebrating her birthday with you the week before, then celebrating it again by partying with her friends.

I might go on this one if you decide to ride in the metro Phoenix area (South Mountain, McDowell, Pass Mountain Loop, White Tanks, Hawes Loop). I've got some friends I haven't seen in years. It would be great to get together with them again.

I've made the trip to Fruita/Moab 4 times now, missed this year - so might be interested in it next year..
AZ has a lot of good rides (Sedona & Flagstaff - are very cool! - South Mountain in Tempe, Good times!) - but I am for sure hitting AZ for family events - so I'll hit it no matter what. 4 days with family, requires at least 2 mornings/afternoons out on the trail.
Also been talking about Whistler or the like - of course that would be later in the year than this.

It was a great time out there last year, but it's a long time to wait to get out west. I'd like to do something in January or February. We are planning for Telluride and Crested Butte in late May.
We are planning for Telluride and Crested Butte in late May.
Nita - Have you checked to see what trails will be open that time of year? Not to be a downer, but not many trails are likely to be open in CB that time of year. Maybe down in Gunnison. One year we were there right before the July 4th weekend and 401 wasn't even open yet.
If you are already going to be there for other reasons then I'm sure you'll be OK, but if it is specifically to MTB, you may want to invistgate further.

Yikes!!! Thanks for the heads-up on this. I was told the best time to ride 401 was early June because of the thunderstorms in late June/July. I know when I hiked the Maroon Bells in late August it snowed at night, so I figured late May would be good. I will do some checking...thanks I owe you one!

Yep, definitely wait until mid to late July if you are thinking CB. Now, Durango... I think you can manage that in May. Not 100% sure...
You folks should check out the SLC area. Convenient, cheap and excellent riding.
check it out.

I would totally be up for another mtn bike trip somewhere west, but April is a bad time for me and really don't think I'd be able to pull it off. Early to mid summer would be better if anone is thinking about that time of year, keep me in the loop. And I would totally be down for hitting Arizona or the Blackhills.
I rode the Wasatch Crest Trail and it was amazing! Still one of the most epic rides of my life! Left me with a huge :D on my face!
A friend of mine had a great job out there and was living the dream life and gave it all up for a job here that pays better, quite a bit better down the line probably, but to me still not worth it. The riding I did out there convinced me that it is one of the best and most complete riding areas in the United States. Good suggestion! :)

I lived in SLC, UT from '98 thru 2000 and while I wasn't biking at that time I was into hiking with my dogs and downhill skiing. While I loved always being 15 minutes from a trailhead, killer dog park or lift line and loved the access to southern Utah(Moab and such), Vegas, Denver and all other things in the West I found it very hard to adjust to a majority of the people in SLC. If you were in the canyons or up in Park City it was one thing but when you were in the city it was quite another. I moved home due primarily to the people of SLC and my friends back here in Minnesota. On top of all of that I could never really get used to the non-separation of church and state in local politics and the idea that I had to have a membership for every bar I wanted to go to. For me, Utah is a great place to visit but unless I lived in Moab or Park City I would only want to vacation there.
I hope this doesn't offend anyone from Utah but this was just my personal experience.

I could see that Bill. Although when I was there the Mormon population had dropped below 50% in SLC and it was like headline news. Pretty amazing when one religion can control a city like that. My brother in-law and sister are Mormons and I have a lot of respect for them and their religion but it is a little extreme there you are right.

It may have dropped below 50% in the city but the outlying towns are probably still closer to 90%. 50% of anything in a town is still lots though...imagine if 50% of Minneapolis rode trails! It would really seem like alot. I respect everyone's beliefs as long as their beliefs don't effect me.

I haven't seen the article yet, but I can say that riding on slickrock style rock is fun and wierd. Now if you are talking about the "Slickrock Trail" in Moab, they are probably telling the truth. It is a hard trail and you will hurt yourself if you screw up. You will break bones. Some people love it, some people hate it. I hate it due to how hard technically and physically it is for me. I feel it is too dangerous for my riding ability. That may not be true for everyone. I like other trails in Moab way more than I do Slickrock. Heck, just go to Fruita.

They are both fine places. They are probably only about 90 minutes apart also. I like the riding in Fruita better than the riding in Moab. Both are cool though. Moab does have way better scenery and lots to do other than biking. Plus two cool National Parks worth seeing. So in my opinion, if biking is your only thing check Fruita out. If you want a variety plus phenominal scenery check Moab out. If you have time like I did last spring, check them both out! You can't lose either way.
P.S. These are my opinions, some people like to ride Moab better and some people like to ride Fruita better. Seems that overall the riders as a whole like Fruita a bit better.

Moab and Fruita are 100 miles apart.
IMO, the best part of Fruita is the Grand Junction trails.
AKA the lunch loops.
Moab rocks as well. Slickrock is at the bottom of my list. I would hit Porc Rim, Amasa Back, Soverign before it.
Everyone likes something a little different and there are trails for everyone!!!!

Great, I still haven't been to the Grand Junction trails. Something to look forward to next year! I loved Sovereign!

I agree that Slickrock isn't that great, but if you've never been there you should at least hit the practice loop, at least once. Just to say that you've done it. It's like riding on the moon, except there's gravity and it hurts a whole lot when you wipe out. Porcupine Rim is still top shelf riding, especially if you can start up at the Upper Porcupine Singletrack. As for Amasa Back or Soverign I would say hop in the car and go ride in Fruita and Grand Junction.

What he said. It might have been the fact that I was finally starting to feel better, but I had a blast at the GJ trails.
I kinda feel I've been there done that now with Fruita, but would ride the lunch loops again for a few days with no problems.
Moab I could take or leave really... although it was worth the visit and the views were specatular. (as was the company)
I need to get to a place like Crested before I can justify Fruita again.
There are also about 25+ more trails in the front range I'd like to ride before I start repeating myself.

I could also see chillin' in Salida for a while. Riding the likes of Monarch, et al.:D
Crested Butte and Durango are on my list for this early Summer. I've ridden Moab and Fruita twice now and still prefer Sedona over them because I just am not able to ride those ledges, they do me in fear factor-style everytime.

Melissa and I are talking about doing something as well, so we might be in for a "group" trip... Keep us in mind
How about a late January or mid February trip to AZ. Nita and everyone else I've ever talked to raves about Sedona (I've been but not biking and it is pretty amazing). That would be my ideal time frame and trip. :)
Also I could still easily be talked into a mid-summer (time it around BHTM's concert at Red Rocks maybe ) short trip to Crested Butte even if we hit the Jan-Feb trip also. After seeing the guys pics from there on the trip that I didn't go on I was ready to shoot myself! :banghead:
I'll die of the winter blues if I have to wait too long to get out west and ride. It was hard to wait until May this year, there was like five nights when I was frustrated and just thought "that's it I can be packed in an hour and be in Moab by this time tomorrow". :cryin:

How about March 17-21? ;)
I was planning on a week....ill see what I can do I really want to go.
Gus if you go for a week you can easily ride both Fruita and Moab. I've actually driven into Fruita for a day of riding and when finished drove back to Moab to spend the night for the next day due to weird weather stuff. It's an easy drive and if you are fast it's a little over an hour.
My opinion of Moab is that it is the best riding I've ever been fortunate enough to ride. I've ridden there ten times now and I still grin from ear to ear every trip. It's a number of things that make it that way for me. The trails are amazing (very different from here), the scenery is second to none, and the town itself rocks. Moab is a must do, now along with what I just said Fruita is no slouch either. For me it is almost the same level as Moab but different. Think of Moab as Mammoth, and think of Fruita as Murphy. Moab is rough, technical, wild, big, and stunningly beautiful. Fruita is flowy, less technical, a little smaller, a little less wild, but still very beautiful. Fruita to me is more like our singletrack here minus the trees and throw in a bunch of elevation. They both have their merit just like Mammoth and Murphy do, just two different varieties.
As far as Slickrock. I agree with the others, if you go to Moab you kind of have to do it, but I think it is mountain biking hell. It is very technical and very demanding which is great for the first hour, and then it gets very monotanous. When I bring new people out now with me we go do the practice loop at Slickrock for a half an hour and then say "ok well that's exactly what it will be like for the next three hours, would you like to do this or go and find a killer technical rocky trail with climbs that will make you puke and downhills that wil make you pee your pants?" and the response is always let's go do something else.
There are a lot of places in this country I haven't ridden, but I've also ridden quite a few of the "cool" places and I still believe if you only get one week a year and you haven't ridden in Moab/Fruita that should be your trip. I hope it all works out for you and if you get to the point where you want to make a plan I can give you all my maps and books and some suggestions.

A) Who is going to be there pretty much for sure?
B) Do you camp, stay in hotels(looks like about $68 per night), sleep in your car?
C) How early do you need reservations for the event and for lodging?
D) What levels of riders will have fun on these trails(are they too tough for a newbie like me)?
I am hoping to go this next year and hopefully sneak in a couple of days in Moab as well.
Thanks in advance!

I'm planning a trip out that way in the spring as well. I Just got an email from a good friend with a wanderlust who is locking down a permanent address in Durango and I'm going out to visit her in the spring. I'll probably to the Moab-Fruita-Durando loop for a week or so while I'm out there.
Anyone else here feel like they need to take a one life vacation from work so they can go do all the stuff they want to do?
I'll probably do a combination of crashing on couches and floors, my car, sleeping bag on the side of a dirt roads and campgrounds. I'll also probably stay at the Adventure Inn in Moab because its owned and run by climbers who are pretty cool and its cheap.
The camping and the slick rock trail head is alright too because you can literally camp about 100 feet from the trail head gate and the rim trail head is just a ride down a dirt road from there.

Go eat at Milt's before / after slickrock - it's kinda hidden, but close to where you go up to the trailhead.
They have some really good sanwiches and stuff, i had an awesome Albuquerque Turkey (with roasted green chiles)

Hopefully I am going. It's on the calendar. I camp when I am in Fruita. Others hotel it. Camping is cheaper and there are showers in the Colorado State Parks, so it is pretty good living. I can't clean a couple of things in the XX loop and am not a great rider, but felt very comfortable on most trails out there. Any section I didn't like I'd hike a bike and be riding in no time. You'd love it and your riding skill will advance a ton out there in just one week.

OMG! My company's "info" email just got spammed by Fruita Fat Tire Fest! There's no way they could have gotten that address other than by web crawling.
info@emgcolorado.com is their email address. I included it in this post so that some other spammers can return the favor.
I'm sure that info@emgcolorado.com is looking for somewhere to buy viagra, fashion watch bands, hot stock tips and a credit report.

I got spammed by them today. I think I asked for it though when I was there last year. Are you sure they didn't get you address from you somehow? You were there last year.
That all being said.....mara and I will be in Fruita from April 18th to 27th. Hope to run across some other MORCers out there!

Yes, I was there. But I know that I didn't use the info email address. I have never used it for sending emails, and never had it in my browser. Maybe they had a web crawler that sniffs around IP addresses of people that visit their web site. Just a guess.

What email address did you use when you pre-registered last year? The reason I ask, is that they just hit mine today and it was the one I used when I registered last year. If you used a different one, did they hit that one also?

Interesting They didn't hit my "normal" one. Only the "info@" one, which I never use. I don't know of any way to look back at my registration. I'll look at the folder where I keep that kind of stuff, and see if there is still something laying around.

WHOOPS :embarass: :redface2: I was looking at the info@ field from the sender, and thinking that it was the "to" address. The spam was coming to my normal address. My (embarrassing) mistake.
<----- = stupid :redface2:
I suppose as a moderator I could cover my tracks, but I'll leave the stupidity for the net to archive forever.

We rode so many....I don't remember which trails these pics came from. I think both of them are from the Rabbit Valley area.
We did find this arch finally. Last year we got lost trying to find it.

Isn't that what all of you are thinking?......;)
It was tough. Especially when I was looking at the Minneapolis forecast......:banghead: When we left on Sunday it was already in the 60's and sunny.
