<hr style="color: rgb(204, 204, 204);" size="1"> <!-- / icon and title --><!-- message --> We are planning on heading to Winona on Saturday morning, 9.22.2007. We will leave the twin cities around 9 am, hopefully start the ride around 11:30am. Ride for a couple hours, grab lunch at local establishment, then drive home. We are usually back by dinner time.
If anyone wants to tag along or meet us there, you are more than welcome. Post up or PM me if you are interested.
If you have never ridden down at Holzinger this would be a prime opportunity as the trails can be a bit confusing to tackle and we already have a small group heading down there. The ride will be very relaxed and we will be stopping to make sure everyone is regrouped often.
Zinger is one of the gem trails in our state. Come along and check it out.

It's a nice little way to mix it up versus going down the Quarry. Though I think we'll take Quarry down this time around so that newcomers get the full ride of the trail. Then again maybe we should just ride up three times, once down Quarry, once down wildwood, and once down salad bar, heck make it four and we'll rip the NSP trail.

I wouldn't consider it singlespeed friendly but I think it would be easily doable by a stronger singlespeeder. I actually was pondering the idea myself but probably will take the full boing just for the downhill.
Josh you ride it on a single yet?

Depends on how big your legs are :) It's SS friendly. I have ridden a 26er @ 32x18 a few times and a 29er at 32x18 and 32x20. The rollers will get your legs warmed up on the SS but the rest of the trail is doable.
Scott, what are you planning on riding? Gonna brave the rigid 1x1 through the quarry :) Last time down I almost rattled some teeth loose.
Michelle and I will be there. We have room for 2 more riders and bikes in the truck. First come first served.

Scott,
I was watching the vid of the quarry and noticed how wide the trail was. It's hardly a trail anymore. The grass is creeping in. I think we need to get down there more often to keep it fresh.

Yikes. Should be doable, may have to grunt a little extra on the rollers. Do you have a thread on freewheel on your hub or are you using a traditional multispeed hub with spacers and cog? If the latter, I have some extra rear cogs that you can borrow to gear down a little bit.

I think I would have fun ripping around on the 1x1 (which I have added a Fox fork to). Though I do love hitting the lower rollers on the way back in my biggest gear and just cranking out the speed. Oh the decisions!

it takes about 2 hours to get there. as for time on the trail, it depends on how the group feels. i would guess around 1.5 - 2 hours plus getting ready time and packing up time.

I don't think the locals in northern WI and bordering yoopers drink anything other than busch light. Actually I think leinies was the word on the street, I drive 5.5 hours to be rewarded with Leinies, what is up with that. I suppose I can't complain, free is my favorite brand.
I've gotta ge in on this, wouldn't mind doing memorial trail on the way home.
We'll have to figure out some carpooling as we want to make our carbon footprint as small as possible.;)
Don't know who's riding with me yet, but, I'll have room for at least 1 in my car and I'm running a Yakima rack system, so, if you've got a Yakima compatible tray that might come in handy.

I figure this will be just like rides we used to have back in college, there are a number of spots to wait and chat while other riders catch back up to the group. We usually wait at all the major intersection so nobody should be worried about getting lost.
I don't wanna get in trouble here but I'll say my wife is fearless but by no means a speed demon. There will be riders of all abilities I figure.

Good Morning, do you mind if an old guy with a very old bike originally from old Winona joins you? Holzinger is one of my favorite trails. I started riding there back in the early '80's. Have loved it ever since:)

Would love to have ya on board. Want to keep us up to date on the rain situation down there? Would hate to drive down there and not have the trails ready to ride.

Here's the deal, folks. I called the LBS in Winona @ 4:15pm today and they said some rain just rolled through but was done. The sky was cloudy but not raining anymore. If it stays dry the rest of the evening we should be good to go tomorrow.
We have also sent a trail spy down to Winona to actually go onto the trail this evening and check the condition. I will post up his report tonight.
I advise you all to check back here before you go to bed.. and maybe even first thing in the morning if you can. If you cannot check it in the AM, private message me for my cell number and you can call me to make sure the ride is still on.

Sorry to hear that Shawn. Maybe next time!
trail spy reported that the trail was just a little tacky and the grass near the trailhead was not even wet. Forecast for tomorrow is sunny and 75.. it's on!
i have lost track of how many will be there, sorry in advance if we accidentally leave without someone :)
