We are planning on heading to Winona on Sunday morning, 9.2.2007. We will leave Bloomington around 9 am, hopefully start the ride around 11:30am. Ride for a couple hours, grab lunch, then drive home. We are usually back by dinner time.

If anyone wants to tag along or meet us there, you are more than welcome. Post up or PM me if you are interested.

what's the trail like? once you start are you committed to doing the whole loop?

The first part of the trail is pretty demanding. You have a set of "rollers" that you start on that are pretty tough small little climbs. Then you start in on a pretty long sustained climb that is probably around 400 or so feet of vertical over the course of it. Once to the top the trails are pretty mellow circling the top of the bluff. From there you have a number of different downhills you can take.

The trails are pretty laid back so you can turn around any point once you get past the rollers as they are one direction but for the most part the rest of the trail can be run in both directions (though there is a preferred direction). The trails lack signs, intentionally, so it is best to go with someone who knows the best route to start.

yeah, what he said. the trail will show you who's boss in the first 15-20 minutes on the "rollers". but then you will be rewarded with some awesome views on the flats up top and a rippin exit through the rollers (except for the giant tree down across the low rollers) it's a blast.

I'm probably not even in shape to do it but would be fun to do two up and downs and do a Quarry dh and a Sugar Loaf dh.

sugar loaf behind garvin? is that even open anymore? there is a big housing development back there now.

how about this:
rollers in
wildwood up
a few loops on the flats
quarry down
wildwood up until we are tired, turn around to wildwood down
rollers out

sugar loaf down :D

Yeah I don't know how much of Sugar Loaf is still open. I'd imagine it would depend on what they've done with the land that enters the trails from the Zinger side. I would think the stuff directly behind Loaf down to the water tower would still be there since you couldn't develop that anyway.

The official calendar has weighed in and reminded me we are going to the in-laws for the weekend. One of these days!

I'm thinking about joining in. Never been to Holzinger. Any word on trail conditions after the flooding?

From Martini six days ago talking about this weekend.

I've got a friend that lives at the foot of the trails, and he says that they're mostly OK. Some washed out sections, but considering the fact that they got like a FOOT (yes 12") of rain, they faired amazingly well. By the time you get there, they may be ridable. We've still been getting rain daily...sucks. My trails are completely water logged.

Sorry for crushing any hearts but family things have come up and we won't be able to make the trip down this weekend. :( If anyone goes, post up the trail conditions.
