:banana:This is the official announcement for the Official 2007 MORC Summit!!!

Come one or better yet come all! It's happening again this year and it is not to be missed! We've got activities planned all day for everyone of every age and every rider level. This year the Summit will be held at the Jensen Lake Picnic Shelter and all activities will be planned close enough to the shelter and the campground that you can park your car and ride your bike all day long!!! Camping is optional and is not arranged by MORC. The shelter holds a large amount of people and will be a safe haven in the event of rain (the Summit will not be cancelled for weather purposes). The shelter also has a great playground and play area for children, along with areas for volleyball or other like activities.

Link to Jensen Lake Picnic Shelter information: http://www.co.dakota.mn.us/LeisureRecreation/Parks/LebanonHills/JensenShelter.htm

Link to Lebanon Hills camping information: http://www.co.dakota.mn.us/LeisureRecreation/Parks/LebanonHills/Campground.htm

Here is the schedule of events (maybe subject to small changes):
8:30am to 9:30am - Kids Ride At Lebanon Hills Trail. To honor IMBA's Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day!
10:30am to 12:30pm - Brunch provided by MORC and the Annual State Of MORC Meeting at Jensen Lake Picnic Shelter.
1:30pm to 4:30pm - Group Ride at Lebanon Hills Trail with of course the usual social time in the parking lot!
5:00pm and on - Pot Luck Dinner followed by the bonfire (what would a Summit be without a bonfire?) and social time (what would a summit be without LOTS of social time?)!!! Whip out your favorite grill-ables and your best recipes and bring them with to share!
7:00pm - Night Group Ride at Lebanon Hills Trail! Come enjoy the spectacular October night air and whip a lap at Leb! Optional for those who would rather stay back and enjoy the bonfire!

The theme for this years Summit is to celebrate....well...US....because we are all MORC and we are all a part of the Minnesota MTB scene. We've accomplished a lot this year and we deserve it! Let's take this day to meet our fellow MORC'ers and future MORC'ers! If you've never been to a MORC event or maybe even a group ride this will be the one to come too!!! Everyone is welcome whether you are a MORC Member or not. We want everyone who enjoys the trails to show up and have a great time!!! :metal:

This is not a fundraising event for MORC (although MORC always accepts donations), our goal is for everyone to have a great time that day, so there is no charge for the days activities. MORC will provide the Brunch during the meeting but the dinner will be solely pot luck, we felt that everyone had so much fun bringing food to the past events that no one would mind showing off their culinary skills again and allowing our funds to be used for building and maintaining our trails. MORC will provide plates and utensils and the shelter has over-sized grills, picnic tables, and electrical outlets. We will have the MORC tent up with MORC Merchandise available and the ability to renew and accept new memberships on the spot. :D

Some Rules (I know, I know, but we must abide):
*Lebanon Hills allows the consumption of individual beer containers and wine on park premises. Kegs and hard liquor are not allowed.
*Lebanon Hills is a drug free area.
*Jensen Lake Picnic Shelter is a tobacco free facility.
*Shelter hours are 5:00am to 10:00pm.
*Damage to the property will be the responsibility of the renter and will be charged to the renter (I.E. MORC).

Once again this is going to be a great time and we hope everyone can make it out to enjoy themselves!!! :)

I will be gone and not checking the forums until September 1st (Away from the Forums for a week OMG!!!). Any questions can be posted and one of the other event planners will answer as best they can (and probably a better answer than I can give anyways ;)). Any PM's sent to me will be answered after the 1st of September.

Have a great week everyone and I hope the riding turns spectacular while I am gone!!! :)

Don't get our patrollers too hung over, either. They have to be up and at 'em by 6:00 AM for the Twin Cities Marathon on Sunday morning.

That is all!

Sure is. It's unfortunate that people will have to make a decision between going to the MORC summit and supporting the local U of M Cycling Club at their fundraising event.

Hopefully next year we'll get our act together and claim a weekend early.... There really wasn't much choice this year.

We still love and support the U of M cycling club and apologize for the conflict. Maybe we can put up a donation bucket to help do our part as a peace offering or something.

Yes, the U of M Downhill race is on the 6th. Their XC race is on Sunday. I would never miss a DH race for the summit. Too bad they scheduled this thing on the same weekend. Oh well, I'm guessing that most of the DH guys don't run in the MORC circle anyway.

Don't worry Hans, We'll take care of you for the excellent event you've got planned for the kids at Hillside. Hopefully you can get a ton of families to attend.:)

we told everyone long before the summit date was set and all that was said was that some thing has to give. hopefully riders will decide that supporting a local growing cycling club is more important. either way its a bummer.

It is a bummer, but enough of the conflict posts... I'm fairly sure there is a way to support both organizations one way or another. Lets not turn this thread into another b*tch session. Lets also not give the volunteers who finally pulled this together a hard time - they did their best to pick a date at late notice. As I said, next year we can try pick one earlier.

Hopefully people will support BOTH organizations.

I don't know if that's an entirely true statement. However, situations like this aren't doing anything from preventing it from being that way in the future.

its not bitching just disappointing that b day rides take precedence when scheduling an event rather than supporting a local club and their race.

September 14th, 15th, 16th (weekend) - Tiffany's B-Day Weekend-Kettle Moraine, WI
September 28th, 29th, 30th (weekend) - Bob Fest II-Levis Trowe, WI
October 12th, 13th, 14th (weekend) - Dan's B-Day Weekend-Cable, WI

I think the calendar you are looking at was someone's personal one, not the big picture of all events happening...

The summit planning session was open to everyone, so if people had ideas or issues it maybe would have been good to show up. Otherwise, yes, its going to fall to those who were there.

I shouldn't even be posting all this as its not my event to plan, but some of the people involved aren't around this week to defend themselves... and I don't want to start an us vs. them thing here. Maybe the event organizers can contact the u of m team and work something out if people will just back off a little bit....

The two birthday rides were not even taken into consideration during the planning. The main things we tried to avoid was Cheq Fat Tire and Bobfest. We did not choose a B-day ride over the U of M cycling event. As has been said before, the whole fall is full already, you have to pick your poison.

It's dissapointing whenever two good events overlap. It used to happen to me (Crystal Criterium) and Duluth Stage race. The U of M (http://www.tc.umn.edu/~umnct/home/index.shtml) puts on a great grass roots event and it is the Conference championships also. They also throw in a DH and a short track race, something you don't see around here often. I would suggest that if people who are able and want to race, to try and schedule a little time to do so. It's a great time and cheaper than the usual race fee. Then head back to the summit.

Good thinking Bill! Looks like the DH racers would have plenty of time to make it back for the bonfire Sat night and the XC race isn't til Sunday.

i guess the biggest point was that we posted in the racing form and then i said something in this form http://www.morcmtb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=22312&page=2 . it is what it is now there is nothing that can be done but continue to promote our race and hope you all will come race and watch some awesome college racers battle for the conference title.

I'm not going to continue to argue the decision of the summit with you as I don't see it as being necessary... but I will be personally supporting both groups and events through both being there and in donations. If I can do it I'm quite sure others can too, so there is no need to continue bringing this up.

A day of Minnesota biking at its best in multiple formats... sounds ok by me.

To quote Travis Miller in another post today
" If you dont like the way the trail you ride is maintained/built, go out and do trail work.

If you dont like when/where an event is planned, go to the planning meetings.

If you dont do something to help change things, then you shouldnt complain."

I think that about sums it up.

Hey Everyone,
As race director for the Season Closer, I'm honored that our event ranks with something like the MORC Summit in some people's books. Yes, it's a bummer that they're the same weekend, but I'm sure no matter what date either MORC or I chose for our events, there would have been a conflict with something. C'est la vie.

I would feel very honored if a rider ran back and forth between our event and the summit to support both groups that weekend. To me that shows a huge level of dedication to the mountain biking scene. Supporting a (relatively) small entity like the U of M team as well as a (relatively) huge entity like MORC takes character. Until then let's try to keep this thread within the topic of the Summit and take the Season Closer chat to the appropriate thread.

Wherever you ride that weekend, bear in mind that though we may ride in different places, we're unified in our celebration of a common joy: Minnesota mountain biking.

I've devoted thousands of dollars to helping races and events and you of all people would know that.
I showed up to the meeting in which details about the summit were decided. If people wanted to figure out a better date or location then my suggestion would have been to come to the meeting or contact those that were in charge.
I've had to chose between more than 3 races on a given day at times. Scheduling conflicts happen. Live with it. Do whatever event means most to you.

Anyhow, as it always seems to go for me these days, most of my fall weekends are booked already so I'm hoping to just be able to make it to the Summit's afternoon group ride. Due to the success/popularity of the giant movie screen at the Afton race, and since we will already have the projector from the morning meeting; we were also thinking of showing movies at the summit. This would take place at the pavilion, after or during the night ride. If you have a favorite MTB movie, feel free to bring it and we can decide what to watch.

I just watched 24Solo (http://www.24-solo.com/) last night and really liked it, so that’s what I’ll be bringing.

I worked on planning the Summit for three years in various incarnations. Once you get into August, it's basically impossible not to have a schedule conflict with one mountain biking event or another. MORC has explored the possibility of moving the Summit to an earlier date, with much the same result, plus reduced planning and coordination time.

Peversely, perhaps, the fact that people are actually upset about the possibility of having to choose between one of the events scheduled for the day of the Summit speaks to the strength of the biking community hereabouts. But that's me, always looking on the bright side.

Planning, organizing and pulling off an event like this is an incredibly time-consuming, physically exhausting and mentally draining experience. All of those involved deserve to be thanked, praised and lauded profusely. It'd be nice to chalk up the schedule conflicts to a learning experience and try to do better next year.

Assuming I can make it this year, I'll take a little more care in meeting my Maker's and perhaps be able to speak in complete sentences the whole time. Cheers.

Funny. I just re-upped the domain name. I guess somebody might be squatting on it until we get a site up. This has happened with other domains we've bought at work before we've posted something. John and Shad might have a better notion of when the Summit site will be ready...

Not sure if we'll use the summit site this year or not... I had kind of forgotten about it actually. I think we can probably just use our regular web site and forums to plan this event.

Charles, if you would like us to take over the registration of that domain name let me know and I'll put in a request via our registrar. Wouldn't hurt to at least re-direct it to the main site or something like that.

Please do. The only use I'd have for the domain name is for the Summit, so it makes more sense for MORC to control it.

How about right now?

Saturday, October 4th, 2008.

Since the MORC Summit also serves as the organization's annual meeting (w/ officer elections), isn't the date set in the bylaws? (ex. first Saturday in October)

Nonprofit organizations that I have been involved with have functioned this way. I always assumed it was a standard thing, but I guess not. Should this be added?

I'll try to make it to some of the Summit but with the Twin Cities Marathon/10 Mile the next day, I'll be taking it easy most of the day.

Remember everyone our Summit date falls on the IMBA Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day so if you have little ones this would be a very fun event for them and a great way to spend some fun time with your kids!!!

Matt and Pete. I have very limited access to information right now so I can't answer those questions but we do have a Summit Planning Meeting on Tuesday the 18th of September at Dunn Bros Coffee off of University and 280 in St. Paul and I could tell you more after that. Anyone is welcome to attend that meeting if they'd like too and give their input as to the day and the activities (although the calendar is set we can always use good ideas and volunteers).

The Board Meetings and Planning Meetings are great ways to get insight into how MORC does things and how they are required to do certain things based on the structure of the organization. Everyone always asks the question "Well why do we or they do it this way?". I've asked that same question and after attending a few Board Meetings and Planning meetings now I know the answers to those questions and now I feel like I can help us reach some of the goals we are trying to acheive. Remember MORC is only as good as the people involved in it and it is our responsibility as members as it is our right to shape the organization and help it grow as we would like to see it.

This year the Summit was scaled down a bit and planned differently than years past. It was planned almost like a family picnic you could say. We wanted attendees to volunteer and get involved (Pot Luck, Group Rides, etc.) and feel like part of the organization. We also wanted to keep costs down for both the attendees (no admission this year) and for MORC. It is hard to explain in brief but depending upon the activities, give outs, etc we do we are required to carry additional insurance on top of what we already pay for. This gets very costly and we felt MORC's money could be used more effectively on things that can be enjoyed all year by us (trails!) and that we could still hold a Summit that everyone would really enjoy and remember. We just don't have the same funds that we have had in years past because of the different investments in trails and projects that our money has gone too this year. We really need to grow our membership numbers, that is a key element in our organization just like any other. At the annual meeting during the Summit this is one of the things we will discuss. We will be recapping the Membership Thread that John started a few months back and telling you in summary what you told MORC. We will also highlight the trails and future plans and acheivements made. As well as other important issues. I highly recommend everyone attend the brunch and meeting so you can see first hand what MORC is doing so you know how you can fit into the picture and maybe what you can do or give to help further MORC's cause.

Remember you are MORC. You are empowered as part of this organization to do or give as little or as much as you can. Support MORC however you can and if it can't be time or money right now then tell a few people about MORC and direct them to the site, hopefully they will see us as a valueable asset to a quickly growing cycling community. Every ounce of volunteer work, every penny, and every kind word spoken to a non-member about us are appreciated and are the path for our growth.

Have a great day everyone and a great weekend!!! I hope the fall weather is exceptional this weekend so everyone can get out to ride and enjoy the trails!!!

Happy Trails! :)

Thanks Charles! I feel honored to be the John Cusack of anything. I'm a big fan of his movies and Say Anything had some of the best lines in it. I love the part where all the guys are hanging out at the convenience store telling Lloyd about women and he asks "So if you guys know so much about women why are you hanging out at the convenience store alone?" and the goofy kid comes back with "By choice man, by choice". Funny movie......great movie line! :D

OK back to our regularely scheduled program. The Summit meeting was excellent tonight and the plans are coming along very nicely. Keep your eyes on this thread for further updates. As I get my notes together and we gather more information there will be opportunities for volunteers to help with different needs. We'll also try and do something similiar to the Meet And Greet with the list of Potluck items people would like to bring. But again let me get my ducks in a row and start getting this information together over the weekend and sometime around the beginning of next week I think I will be able to get everyone a little more excited about this event. One thing I wanted to update or mention last night was the Kid's Ride. Don McNaughton has come up with some great fun ideas for this. He will be doing morning treats (juice and pop tarts) for the kids along with possibly some other fun stuff for them to have, and even better the kids will also be hunting for some treasure trail during the ride to make it even more exciting. We are also hoping that the Gnome will make an appearance at some point too, but you know he can be a little unpredictable so we'll have to see if we can coax him out.

It has also been decided to have two ride leaders so that if it looks like we will have some older possibly more experienced kids along then we can split them into two groups so that the older kids can have fun with some more challenging riding.

Don has put a lot of thought into this ride and it sounds like it will be a lot of fun for the younger ones. And remember the Summit Home Base (The Jenson Lake Pavillion) has a great play area for the kids so after the ride definitely bring the kids back to the Pavillion for brunch and play time and that way you yourself can attend the Annual Meeting and see exactly what MORC has been doing for 2007 and what the plan is for 2008.

This event is really shaping up, and I know that myself and many others are really glad that the kick-off for the event is involving the families and the younger generation of MB'ers and hopefully new MORC'ers in training! Thanks Don for all your hard work and thought!!! :)

Here is the link to the thread for the Kid's Ride:

http://www.morcmtb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=22767&highlight=Kid

Don may need help with some things that morning so if there are parents that would like to volunteer a small portion of their time please contact him and see if maybe you can help with this fun event!

First post of this topic had a schedule, that may have been subject to small changes...

Sorry everyone it took us a little longer to get this posted as we have been working hard to get as many things organized as possible to make this a great event. So now that we have all our ducks in a row we can get a detailed schedule out.

Unless otherwise noted all activities will take place and start (including all group rides except for the kid's ride and the X and XX morning ride) at the Jensen Lake Picnic Shelter.

Link to the picnic shelter details: http://www.co.dakota.mn.us/LeisureRecreation/Parks/LebanonHills/JensenShelter.htm (http://www.co.dakota.mn.us/LeisureRecreation/Parks/LebanonHills/JensenShelter.htm)

Here is the updated schedule with details:

8:30am-9:30am - Kid's Ride to honor IMBA's "Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day" led by Don McNaughton
Meet at the Lebanon Hills Trail parking lot at 8:30am. There will be two rides, one for less experienced biker tykes and one for more experienced biker tykes. There will be breakfast snacks and giveaways for the kids also. It will be a fun time for our future little MORC'ers!

8:30am-10:00am - X and XX Skills Ride led by Shad Holland
Meet at the entrance to the X Loop at Lebanon Hills Trail at 8:30 (that's 8:30 at the X entrance, not the parking lot). Shad will lead out and help everyone play in the X and XX Loops. Shad is a great instructor and it would be an excellent time to learn some new skills and ride some new obstacles. Sounds like a great time!

10:30am-12:30pm - MORC Brunch and Annual Meeting
Starting at 10:30am MORC will provide brunch while our Annual Board Meeting takes place. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend this meeting as many things of interest to everyone will be covered along with the election for the new board if necessary. We will also be giving awards to Volunteer Of The Year along with others activities. If you can attend one board meeting this year you should plan on this one. Food will be served from 10:30am to approximately 11:00am. :bunny:

1:30pm - MORC Summit Group Ride
Group rides have become a bigger activity this year than ever and the Summit will be no different! Let's see how fast we can fill the single track at Lebanon! We will meet at 1:30pm sharp and start riding from the Jensen Lake Pavilion to the Lebanon Hills Trail parking Lot (short road ride). There will be numerous ride leaders and designated ride guides in the group so no one gets left behind or lost. There will also be an optional woman's only Group Ride leaving at the same time so if you want to ride with the girls feel free to find Mara Larson or look for the gathering of our great MORC women at the south side of the Pavilion. Sorry guys but the women's ride is for women only, and no you can't go even if you wear a dress! :nono:

The ride will vary from fairly fast at the front to possible first timers at the back with guides throughout the whole group to ensure that everyone has a great ride. So if you've never been on a group ride now is the time to get your wheels wet! Figuratively speaking of course as we don't ride wet trails.

5:00pm-10:00pm - The MORC Summit Pot Luck BBQ and Picnic
Starting at 5:00pm we will fire up the grills, and set up picnic tables to fill with your own culinary delights and creations. Just like we did for the Meet And Greet I'll ask everyone to PM me (DanB) with their plan of what they are bringing and I will continue to re-post with the additions as I get them. Everyone did such a great job at the Meet And Greet and we had so much great food let's see if we can't top that for the Summit! Please make sure to PM me with your contribution as we want to make sure we have enough food for everyone to enjoy. MORC will provide charcoal, plates, cups, and utensils and we will designate a few "grillers" to handle the grilling duties. There will also be power outlets available to run crock pots and other electrical needs. After everyone is done enjoying the feast we will hold a raffle for some great prizes that have been donated to us. Raffle tickets will be available to purchase at the event and all proceeds will go directly to MORC for future trail efforts! Once dusk sets in we'll fire up the bonfire and open up the back wall of the pavilion and play mountain bike movies and videos for your viewing pleasure! This should be the best BBQ and picnic the Twin Cities has ever seen!!! :D

7:00pm - Group Night Ride (optional for those who would rather stay and socialize)
We will take off from the pavilion at approximately 7:00pm with lights blazing to do a run through the single track of Leb. Everyone is invited to attend of course but if you'd rather stay at the BBQ and picnic you are certainly welcome to skip this ride and enjoy the great social atmosphere our group is so good at providing!!!

The MORC tent will also be up during the event and we will have the capability of renewing memberships and registering new memberships as well as selling MORC related goodies.

Volunteers are needed for events like this and if necessary I will post with volunteer needs as they become determined. But if you have a special skill or if you think you can help please feel free to PM or E-mail me and I will get you on the list of helpers.

We need to be cleaned up and done at the Pavilion at 10:00pm so we will need every one's help in making sure we can accomplish that and keep Lebanon Hills Regional Park happy with our organization. :)

As you can see a lot of effort is being put into making this Summit a great time for everyone and I firmly believe that a great time will be had by all. So everyone plan on coming out, having fun, and helping support your organization at this once a year event!

Any questions or comments can be directed to me and I'll be happy to help!

Also, there is a ton of fire wood that we could use if needed from my backyard- but I will need some help getting it together.

I have a skillet if you need it for the brunch too...

Thanks Jodi.

Also, does anyone have name tags?

I was going to try get fancy avatar/forumid/name tags printed, but I just can't find a program that will do it and am running out of time... so we just need the old' style nametags.

Anyone that is going to be there early have an extra seat and bike space that can give me a ride ?

I live at 7th & Arcade in St Paul but could meet just about any where.

I do need to be there by 8:00 am to get ready for the kids ride.

I do have an alternative plan so if no one can dont worry.

National Weather Service says

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 84. South southeast wind between 11 and 16 mph.

The trails may be wet but sounds like we might get to do this after all.

80s... a little warm for a good bonfire in October, but much better than rainy. I'll take it! Trails are going to be real iffy if we don't get sun and wind. Even if we're marginal we probably won't want large group rides on the trail... we do want to set an example, after all.

Stay tuned, we'll watch the trails and see. My guess is early morning rides won't be a go unless it clears up now. 24 hours of sun is my guess, so we can get a rough guess by when (if) it clears up today. Trail was fairly tacky already last night and had some slick spots still.

Not all is lost, however! I'm actually quite excited about the idea of an urban ride - might be a nice change, and would allow for more socializing as we ride. I think it will be just as fun either way. :)

The place we're holding this is perfect for this kind of event. I'm super excited for tomorrow.

Just got word that Leb is closed and will remain so all weekend. Let the urban riding begin!

I hope this won't scare anyone off from participating. If you haven't been on an urban ride you are missing out. We will have maps and lots of ride leaders, and the route that is selected is going to be super fun! Maybe Shad can work in some skills sessions into it as well. Some of the best learning can be done by this kind of riding.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMoHijIpero

Ok, so we won't be this crazy... just think about it as mountain biking on the streets. We'll take bike paths, maybe do some riding up and down steps... those with real skills can show us how its done.

All you need to know is how to ride a bike on pavement... no skills required, but its a fun time to practice.

Good question.

The committee is working on the timing and will post plan B shortly... stay tuned! As of right now we're thinking about 2 rides leaving at the same time, one going a bit farther than the other. THe farthest ride will likely take us into downtown St. Paul and back for about 30 miles of bike trail riding.

This was the original schedule. We are working on a revisted and will post shortly. Most likely the urban ride will be in place of the afternoon Leb ride.

---

I hope that everyone out there that was thinking about attending the summit (or not) hasn't been turned off by the recent change in the ride plans or any of the agenda.

I want everyone to know that the Summit is an important time for MORC. Yea, we have quite a few get-together's now - more than we used too. This one is important because it sets the tone for the next year. We are taking care of some very important business... but this is also a time to come together and express your opinions (good or bad) on things we have done or things we need to do. If something is on your mind you can always speak up, but the Summit is one of the best times to do it.

Some of you might be thinking that this isn't your kind of event. Thats an even bigger reason to come! All members are just as important to MORC as the next, and while we can't please everyone we can sure make the Summit that one time that everyone shows up to celebrate our organization.

If you are impacted by MORC... be it in a positive, negative, or mixed way... you owe it to yourself and to the organization to come on out and be there to share in it all. (especially the GOOD!)

Off soapbox.... :p

I'd again like to thank everyone that lent a hand in pulling this together.

Thanks to those that helped with all the cooking. Morning crew and grilling later in the day it was really appreciated.

Thanks to everyone that helped clean up last night. Even if we couldn't tell you exactly what to do. It's just nice to have so many people willing to help.

It was so great to meet so many new people yesterday. Thanks for coming out. I hope we see more of you at events in the future.

A big hand to Dan Burros, Brandon and the planning crew for spearheading this and bringing it all together. You're all awesome to work with! :D

Lastly, congrats to the new board members. There's another great crew ready to lead MORC into the next year!
