View Full Version : Things you must do once in MPLS?

I was just wondering, can you guys tell me things to do in Minneapolis that are unique in some sense?

I don't know how to explain it too well, but basically I want to see stuff that isn't a tourist site. I really am not interested in some old building restored, or a museum. And I guess it'd be best if people who were raised in MN gave me advice.

That looks pretty cool. My best friend is vegetarian and when she visits me for my graduation next summer I'll be sure to take her there.

It is amazing; the food is so good. Have the Jasha Curry and the Jasha Momo's. Great now I am hungry.

Also go to the fair. Most interesting place in Minnesota for 12 days.

-Go see a show at First Avenue.
-Hang out at the Red Dragon on a Saturday night (oh the stories I have!).
-Bowling at Elsies.
-State Fair food! (not Mpls but always fun)
-Run through the "nude beach" by Cedar lake at night with bright lights and watch everyone run.
-Bridge Jump off the Cedar bridge into Nakomis
-Hang out on Nicollet downtown and "make" the professional pan handlers, then follow them for a while and make them give up for the day.
-Evening walks around the lakes are always nice.

Tough to say, I was raised here and the things we did growing up seem pretty stupid or boring, but I'd do em all again and still do. Just a big 29 year old kid :)

Catch the Blind Lizard Rally on Nicollet Island. Every year on Fathers Day, I think. Old & exotic 2-wheeled stuff of all sorts, motorized & otherwise.

I've suggested this before, but going out for drinks at Brits Pub when the weather is nice can be pretty good. Lots of people watching if you get a seat on the sidewalk. Good food as well. It's doubly nice if there's music at Peavey Plaza across the street. Can be pretty busy on Friday and Saturday nights, but getting a table on the sidewalk isn't usually too tough.

I love stuff like jumping off of bridges. Here we jump off the public docks which are about 30 feet up but now you get fined because of stupid maritime terrorism rules.

A lot of the ideas are really good. My best friend here in Juneau absolutely hates Minnesota. He knows nothing about it at all except its "way in the middle" and he's never even been to this region. So I figured I'd show him that he's an idiot by doing a bunch of fun stuff in MN.

Ride your bike around Minneapolis and St.P. They are the core of the T.C.'s. Don't bother with the burb's. See the many cool neighborhoods and cafes and shops. Get a City Pages ( they are free) at a liquor store or restaurant and check out the hot spots for food, drink, music, dancing, film and shows. If you are into sports...go see a Saints game or a Twins game. Football is about to start...go see a Vikes or Gopher football game. Great atmosphere on gamedays.:etard:

I always forget about this, which is strange because it's right by my house:
Minnehaha Falls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnehaha_Falls). Especially since there's actually water running over it again. And there's a nice restaurant there, Sea Salt (http://www.seasalteatery.com/), that has some good and fairly cheap seafood. And some good beer (they have Surly Furious on tap).

Have dinner and a walk around the falls. Lots of walking paths that lead down from the falls to the Mississippi.

assuming that tubby makes some progress and she is here at the right time, take in a gopher hoops game, gopher or wild hockey, I love the twins but the barn marriucci and the excel are the only three venues worth going to in town. (maybe midway too)

I second Sea Salt. Good beer, good food all set in a really nice park. I usually take out of town guests there. I also like going to the sculpture garden.

found this, it is heavily alcohol based but an interesting read for anyone semi-familiar with the area.

Take your bike and do the Grand Rounds loop. There are a lot of tar paths around the lakes, Mississippi River, and neighborhoods that are pretty scenic and a nice mellow time. Great way to see the MPLS parks.

I can't believe no one has mentioned this at this site. Ride Theodore Wirth Park's singletrack. Not many cities have singletrack in the woods within sight of skyscrapers!

Mpls. is a great city to see on a bike!

If you like music, check out First Ave, 400 Bar, any other music bar on the West Bank. There are now others, but I am getting older and out of the loop!

If you like ice cream, check out Pumphouse Cremery or Sebastian Joe's.

It's barely outside of Mpls., but I still count it: Tour the Surly Brewing company on Saturdays. They are a new small brewery out here. They are small but pretty cool. Check their website for dates and times.

Anyway there is a reasonable amount of things to do in Mpls. I wouldn't say it's some tourist destination, and if I was from somewhere else, I probably wouldn't vacation here, but it's alright to live at and an ok place to visit.

Try and figure out who the people with regular jobs are that pan handle to make some side money are and make it hard for them to get money from people, it really pisses them off and is quite fun. You'd be surprised at how many people fake it to get money down there.

We need more people doing this! Maybe it would stop the panhandling!

Seriously? I say an increase in the number of people harassing other people is a bad thing.
Much worse than having to say saying "Sorry" to someone.

If you are offended by panhandlers, get over it.
And be offended by the inadequacy of the systems that cause/allow them to be there.

There are SOOOOO many better things to do with your time...
especially if you are new and trying to get a feel for Minneapolis.

The panhandling conversation should be moved to the Non-Biking Forum.

IMO...

- Ride the lakes and river.

- Go eat and drink on 1st Ave, in Dinkytown, in Uptown, and on Eat Street.

- Grab a City Pages.

- Find something cool going on at the U of M.

- Walk around downtown.

- Ride the light rail down to the Minnehaha Falls.

Pete, I was just being a smartass. My heart truly goes out to anyone who lives in a situation that requires them to have to panhandle to get by. Sorry if my banter was out of taste. If a moderator wants to move my post to the non-biking forum or delete it, they are more than welcome.

The inlaws were in town from NYC this past weekend. Best time we had was going to the Mill City Farmers market, making our way across the stone arch bridge and checking out the new park across from Tuggs.

Matts Bar, JUCY LUCY there the best burgers, Shorty and Wags for ribs or wings, Scott-Ja Mamas for BBQ

Strange, I just googled Jucy Lucy and this wikipedia entry came up:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jucy_Lucy
The jucy lucy was apparently invented at Matt's Bar (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Matt%27s_Bar&action=edit) in South Minneapolis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minneapolis), Minnesota (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnesota), though this is disputed. The 5-8 Club (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=5-8_Club&action=edit), a short distance south of Matt's, also claims to have invented the sandwich; this establishment uses the "juicy lucy" spelling.

The jucy lucy can be considered the cheesesteak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philadelphia_cheesesteak) of South Minneapolis, as it engenders similar feelings of protectiveness in many locals. However, reinterpretations of the lucy are encouraged, rather than quashed (unlike better-known signature dishes of some other cities, such as the cheesesteak or the Chicago style hot dog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_style_hot_dog)); for example, the Groveland Tap (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Groveland_Tap&action=edit) in neighboring St. Paul (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Paul%2C_Minnesota) serves a "Cajun Lucy" featuring jalapeņo peppers floating in pepper jack cheese.

Am I the only one who had no idea that the Jucy Lucy was a Minneapolis invention?

Lezgo Cycling

where it was invented is long time dispute, there is also a place called adrians that has one and claim to be the original but if you try all three, you will see that matts is BY FAR the best

If you are going to bring your own bacon, why not just make the burger yourself. Fry it up in the grease from the bacon, use double cheese portions and a solid 3/4 lb of beef to contain all the cheese you cram in there. Oh yeah, then drink all the Surly Furious you want out of the 16 gallon can in the basement. Sounds like I have plans for this Friday already.

And to not do a complete hijack here, other options:
1. If you are of age, visit the bars in Nordeast. Mayslacks, grumpys, stasius, NE palace, psycho suzies, etc..... Once you are done with those, try out Town hall and pizza luce (downtown).
2. If it's thursday and june - august, go to a free waterski show (www.tcriverrats.com (http://www.tcriverrats.com)) shameless plug
3. Check out a no-name race (alley cat style bike race) on the first sunday of every month (yes, winter too).

Good call with the Scott-Ja Mama's (hole-in-the-wall "awesome")BBQ which is mainly take-out due to the little seating area.

Also, Nyes piano bar is good and for cheaper food try nearby Kramarczuk's-best authentic East EU food to go.

Actually it was in St. Paul. If you want to have a proper sausage party in the Twin Cities it's got to be in St. Paul.

Going to have leftover sausage for dinner.
