So it started to rain pretty heavy in Brooklyn Center in the last ten minutes. Does not show signs of stopping :incazzato: I am sure there will be no riding today

it has been raining that much here I think too. Except for yesterday. And as for the grass....if you look at it that way then yes my yard is really coming together now

The only reason I rode last Friday was because it looked like we'd be getting some rain and I better get out, but who knew I would be off the bike for this long waiting for it to dry out! We've been a little spoiled with the dry weather the past few summers. The dry weather has wreaked havoc on the trails, but we've always had dry trails to ride!

My lawn is becoming a jungle.... I need the rain to stop so it can dry enough for me to mow the dang thing. However my lawn has been green all summer, underground sprinkler system is the only way to go ;)

I think with my lack of riding the past few days I am getting fat...

I am getting depressed over here without riding.

Here in Oakdale is also raining (not hard, though).

simple way to stop your depression in the rain, find a friend with a pickup that has limited slip differential in the rear, give your friend some gas money and go drifting! i do it when it rains... it's actually pretty fun if you've got the motor to do it

The thing with watering your lawn in the summer is that you have to mow what grows in.

no watering, no mowing. it's a good relationship, as far as i'm concerned.

I know this is a MTB site, but come on ride on the roads or greenways or both, which ever is your fancy. You get to ride and it keeps the fat off!
I am riding down towards Mankato and back this weekend if anyone wants to join!

I've logged more miles on my rollers this week than I did all last winter - that is sure depressing.

I don't want to ride my bike in the rain. I'm afraid of it somehow getting ruined and it's the only bike that I have...

Of course when it dries up i'll take it mtn. biking which is probably no better than getting wet but to each his own I guess...

Unless your bike is made of sugar I won't work about that. Just wipe it down when you're done.

mmmm....sugar bike.....

It wont if you keep it clean between rides. I ride in the sleet, rain, or snow and my bike is just fine. It is always a choice. I am just saying that there are ways to ride when the weather is not the best! Remember riding is riding.

If you did have a sugar bike, you you eat a piece of it after each ride or?

I ended up mowing mine in the rain. After being gone for 4 weeks, it looked really bad.

Unfortunately, the drought and no watering also took its toll. I now have a lot of dead patches, and about a quarter of the lawn is now overgrown with broadleaf viney weeds. I hate using chemicals, but I think it's the only option at this point.

My old bike was a sugar, and it kept breaking frames. Maybe it was the humidity.

You may be able to use frosting to repair it.

We live in Minnesota, eh. If we let the weather stop us, then we'd never ride! :)

Modern technology to the rescue. Nowadays with sealed bottom brackets and hubs, you've got little to worry about. I've really been impressed with how my SRAM drivetrain has withstood rain and mud. I'm also a big believer in using wheels with a ceramic braking surface (or using disc brakes!). This all adds up to practically zero maintenance.

I did a couple of really muddy MNSCS races last year. Since then I've only rinsed off, wiped down, and cleaned the gunk off my chain and cassette of my bike a few times. No parts replacement necessary. Runs like a champ and shifts like butter.

Doing a long ride in the rain is kind of carthetic. So, hit the roads or double-track and stop moping!

If you're riding road you also go faster if it's wet. At least on the straightaways...

I will agree that the majority of components on bikes can handle the wet weather quite well, however, disk breaks do not do well at all.

I have been in two muddy races, the MNSCS #10 (St Cloud) last year and the 12 hours of Kato this year and the breaks have lasted about 2 hours before they were ground down to the metal carrier. It is not from breaking alone, but rather even if you are not actively breaking the soupy mud gets pulled into the small gap between the pads and the disk and continues to wear the pads down.

Other people I have talked to have noticed the same thing. Wet is not a problem, but sand/grit will kill the pads in a hurry.

Interesting. All the more reason to rock with a rim brake and ceramic surface. I was at the same St. Cloud race, and no problems with the drivetrain or brakes. Still running the same pads on the brakes too.

I would love it if there was a 700c road rim that had a ceramic braking surface, but I'm not sure such a thing exists. That would rock for cyclocross!

A lot of it has to do with what type of pad you're running. Organic pads will get worn down in a hurry in that type of riding, semi-metallic will fare better. EBC makes a sintered bronze pad specific for wet-weather riding, if you're gonna be doing a lot of that.

I tried to ride mammoth yesterday and found the conditions to be disagreable, so I opted to ride the many gravel double tracks / roads around that area, that was fun! It was a nice change and still a great work out. I found it quite amazing what parts of me got sore/tired, totally differnt then the usual from trail riding. Ultimelty I see a road bike in my future.
