What is the interest level for a bike orienteering race here. I want to set-up a race that is basically non-sanctioned and depending on who is in it set it up for that group ...for fun.

I have the skills to set up such a race and aquire the maps and whatnot and I have the orienteering flags and punches and other methods....depending on the group and what type of event they are looking for. I've done this before and its just as much fun to set up as it is to compete.

I want to set up a three hour race for my pace which would range from 2 - 4 hours because its on bikes and I'm not the fastest kid on a bike. (I can ride a very long time but not that fast) I also need someone who is average at orienteering and biking to run the course after I set it up.

It will also be in Minneapolis. I live in Minneapolis and despite the terrain I can make it tough based on available choices.

Who is interested? You will have to pay for the maps and they will be about $10 per team.

I'm shooting for early September.

THUMP!

Go for it Shawn. Depending on what the actual date is, I will try to be there. (as a competitor, not a patroller.) The Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival is Sept. 14-16, and the Rough Stuff Rendezvous MTB-O is always part of that. And, of course, we will be up there for the CFTF anyhow.

I tried a few years ago to get some interest in MTB-O going outstate, but nobody seemed to be interested. It is very big in Europe and Australia. (See http://www.trailquest.co.uk or http://www.mtbo.cz/woc2007/)

Post up on the MN Orienteering Club website, too. (www.mnoc.org (http://www.mnoc.org)) You will get some interest there.

Ride safe,

I'm interested.

Can't commit because of Fat Tire (including Sunday's Rough Stuff Rendezvous - love that race) and a WORS race the following weekend. It's a good idea; go for it.

I'd totally be interested, post up the details when you find out and I'll try and get some more people in on it.

I'll do it then. The tentative date is Sunday September 9th stating at 10am somewhere in Minneapolis and ending somewhere in Minneapolis a few blocks from the start.

In a couple weeks I'll start getting info on who is going to do it.

Not mentioned - Some of this will be off the bike. There will be a bit of foot work but I'll set it up so that the foot work will be a small part of it. I can set it up so there are a bunch of controls between a few bike stops and people can roam around through different wooded areas and buildings or I can set it up so that some are right off the bike and some are a bit off the bike. Just know that you will have to get off your bike. If I made it all right off the bike it would just be too easy to navigate through. You may also end getting wet, dirty, sweaty and tired. I’m not going to make it that easy or worry about you finishing all muddy or anything. (for the ranters this does not mean in any way shape or form that anyone will be riding wet mountain bike trails) I wouldn’t put a control out in the middle of a lake but have been in a race where one was in the middle of a swamp in the U.P. So that’s where I’m coming from. Its more of a cyclist specific race than anything but you never know what I may make you do. It IS for fun but if you don't finish wet, dirty, sweaty and tired I sucked at setting up a course.
I’m also thinking of ending the race at a place that serves perfectly chilled beers and food. Not that anyone here likes food or especially beer but you never know?

I also need a little help on race day for minor stuff.

There will be a couple of rules too but only a couple.

The UK site has some good suggestions for rules. So does the Polaris Challenge. (http://www.polarischallenge.com/)

Like most ARs, you should have a list of mininum gear, too.

The 9th works. All I had planned that day was riding in the St. Paul Bike Classic, but this sounds better.

Crap-O the 9th is the St. Paul Bike Classic and my wife and I are already signed up and paid... Otherwise this sounds like a lot of fun...

Hey everyone! (everyone who wants to do this) I'm looking at this a couple ways.
What kind of even do you want? I can do it anyway. I just need to hear input on what you want. I can make it a fast and furious thing I can make it woodsy. Slow. Medium. I can make it about maps and compasses. I can make it city. What are you looking for? I need to know. I dont want to guess. I'd like to combine both and hopefully introduce you to some things newer than the MORC trails (not that that is a bad place)...but I'd like to know as to not disappoint. If you just want to be surprised I can also do that very well...trust me I can.

I agree, urban, woods, street and trail. Keep everyone thinking, I think it would be more intresting that way.

Hans I've been really busy and was going to put if off until the end of next month but Its not working out for that either. I haven't been able to get any weekend time to put this together and as soon as I do I'm heading up to the BWCA and hanging out on Whiskey Jack with my dog for a few days.
