Just to let everyone know-the timber sale (logging) scheduled for 2008
has started NOW. I talked to the logger yesterday (July 20th) and he hopes to be
done by the end of september. This sale includes areas on all sides of
the LEVIS MOUND area. He may also take over a sale on TROW MOUND yet
this fall.
What does this mean? Well, all trails will remain OPEN, singletrack,
XC and cross country running trails. HOWEVER, even though the sale put
restrictions on leaving any debris on any trail, they (the loggers)
are not going to pick up every stick, branch or whatever. Also, I
rode yesterday and the skidder and tracked processor DO leave ruts,
bumps and jumps across the bike trails.
What can be done to help? Well, please take time out on rides or
hikes to pick up debris from the trail-even a clipper would
help-sometimes the skidder runs over smaller brush leaving it on the
trail, so if those can be cut back, it would be great. Tools like
grub hoes can be used to fill in ruts-any help you can give will make
this cutting go smoother.
Finally-yes- the Lower forest (in some areas) will look like crud for a while, but most of
this timber sale is to get a healthier forest in advance of oak wilt
and gypsy moth, which are coming/here soon, so in the long run, it's a
good thing.(I'll keep reminding myself of that). There is a 12 hr
race here Aug 11th, a CC race here toward the end of Aug and one in
mid sept also and a adventure race in October (bike/orienteering, 24
hours!) The forestry department is planning on disking, grading and
re-seeding trails that are damaged by skidders and logging trucks
before winter freezedown-let' s hope so!
Contact me if you're interested in spending a few hours "fixing"
trails-we can put a notice up here on the Levis Mound group page.
