I am starting this thread so that if anyone is going to do a little weed whacking out at Hillside, they can post up in here to see if anyone else would like to help out. The major trailwork days will still be posted individually. Sometimes having two or three people at once, instead of one person three different times, can get WAY more work done. The good old fashioned assembly line technique.

I will be out tonight, Monday, July 9th to do some whackin' in the middle of section four. From the start of the last extended climb (near the dirt pile along the road) to the end of the high grounds. I will be starting at about 4:30, so if you can make it, post up! I drive the black Acura car with HAZRDUS on the license plates.

I need to get in touch with the guy who drives the green company truck (landscaping I think) and rides out at Hillside. I spoke with you in the parking lot a few weeks ago and you had offered to bring some equipment to help with trailwork. Let's chat.Rich

Yeah when I got here a guy just came out of the trail and said there were 2 big piles of trees down in section 3 and another one in section 4. I cleared the the ones in section 3 and I'm just heading back out to section 4 to get that one and try to get some weed whacking done also. I will ride it tomorrow and check the whole trail again.

I was able to get all three trees piles cleared with only the help of my trusty Gerber 6" collapsable handsaw, and log to use as a lever... oh and a little elbow grease. That storm on Sunday really knocked some stuff loose! I moved a bunch of other trees that fell right next to the trail (or someone had already moved them just to the edge) also. Got a bunch of whackin' done towards the last third of section 4. Lookin' good again.

I need a chainsaw...

I will be out there this Wednesday, July 11th. I'll be doing some more whackin' at the rear trail entry/exit between sections 2 & 3, and then hit the start of section 3. Join up if ya can! Same time, 4:30. I will have some extra equipment if you don't have any.

We will be assembling a crew to transport dirt out to areas of the trail that require repair. We have one ATV with a trailer, and several shovels and rakes. If anyone can come out and help, that would be great. We could probably use another ATV and trailer also. Post up or PM me if you can help.

Thanks,
Rich

They would need to be small enough to fit down the trail. Closer to 2 feet wide.

Thanks anyway though!

Thanks Kyle!

We had a total of 5 people helping out today. Joel got there first, then Tom showed up with the Kubota tractor. I got there just after that. Then Trent made it out. About half way through the day Eddie stopped by for a quick help session... that turned into half a day. Thanks everyone!

We were able to fill in several inches deep of clay soil at the beginning of section one, where the roots and sand were getting really bad. We also placed several armoring rocks in there to help with the "skid" factor. Hopefully the logs we placed, to keep the riding line across the rocks, will stay in place. We also removed all the sand from the area and added a drainage spot. Now there isn't any sand to run down the trail and pile up at the bottom. No one likes a sand trap in the middle of a turn.

We also hit another spot in section one just before the railroad tie climb, where the new little log drop is. We got the tractor back in there and removed ALL the sand from that big corner at the bottom and replaced it with several inches of the clay soil. Then we added an entry and exit berm to help carry speed through there. A drainage opening was also used to keep water from pooling.

After that, we went to section four to tackle the downed tree. That was a 20 minute job that turned into a two hour job. When we finished, we looked at each other in amazement because no one got mamed. There's something about using a chainsaw one-handed, arm fully extended, 15 feet off the ground, hanging on with one hand and standing on one foot, that just ain't right.:nono: Then we cleared another one up the trail that was ready to fall any day. Good times.

Thanks again, BIG TIME, to Tom and Trent Warner with the Kubota. That thing was worth it's weight in gold again today. Good job guys.

If you can make it out to Hillside this Sunday, October 7th, we'll be out there doing maintenance again. (weather permitting, of course) Meet in the back compost lot any time after 8am. We'll be out there past noon most likely. Bring a shovel and rake if you can.

...... bad date for me. I'm off to help support my buddy and his wife that are doing the twin cities marathon that day... If I'm done early enough I'll try and make it out to help.

Hey Cal, thanks for the ATV and all the hard work today. You made it possible to get that major overhaul completed. Let's see what that pesky rain thinks of that climb now. Try erode that!

On another note, I think I will try to use the posting methods of the other trailwork threads at other locations. They start a new thread for each different trailwork day, so we can let this one die. That way we can have the location and date in each thread title. I think that might be more effective.
