Was there today around 6 pm, my car temp read about mid 80s. From old hartley road I went in to the swamp trail. Bits of muddy area with several bike and foot tracks. I have to unclip and walk some parts so as not to worsen the damage. The trail to the guard rail is great. Thanks to KL and the gang for putting up the bridges (I'm sorry to miss the 2 Thursdays...I will be there for the next one, and hopefully for the rest)
It looks like no rain in forecast so the trails should dry out more.
The ride was great, enjoy your ride.

Swamp trail bits of mud, portage bike
Downed trees along the trail had been recently cleared.
A huge tree along old hartley road still blocks the way but could be bypassed.
The trails to the guard rail including the inner loop is dry.

How are the trails? Did the duluth area get much rain this last week? Thinking about heading up there friday/saturday

What is this "rain" of which you speak?
Duluth is 1 week away from its driest August on record. Only 0.24'' so far. Some trees are turning color and dropping leaves from the stress. I haven't ridden since Powder Monkey but trails should be in good shape. It may rain tonight but the weekend's supposed to be dry. Bring the bike.

Hey,
i live in hibbing, and i'm riding trails that have been under water for years!!! i camped and rode in the east bearskin lake area this past weekend, (north of lutsen), and things are dry all over. we'd need a week straight of rain to wreck riding in this area.
anyway........................
Peace,
Joe

Was there today a little bit late so I made sure to bring my lights. The trail may be considered tacky by Hartley standard. If there will be no rain for friday, it should be very ridable this weekend. There is a downed tree as you enter the trail from old hartely road. The obstacle is right before the first skinny before the creek. I do not have a chain saw, ergo can't do trail sanitizing. Sorry KL

Biked again today, as usuall after 2 days with out rain the trail is Tacky by Hartley standards. Hoping that there will be no rain coming, weekend should be good biking "Less tacky, Less muddy":) More downed trees:banghead: Along Hartley Road from the parking lot, the downed tree before the skinny still there, and big one where a detour is now being made by trail hikers, runners and bikers.

We’re passing through our favorite old town of Duluth on Wednesday (21st) and hope to stop at Hartley for a quick ride. NOAA claims it will be 31 for a high that day so we assume that would keep the trails tacky. Feel to agree with or dispute that theory. Anyone care to ride with us around 1pm that day?
Happy Thanks Giving! :crazy2:

I was there yesterday afternoon, the T from my car read 26 F. The ground is frozen, some snow cover, traction is good, minimal mud. So if next week is as cold as today and yesterday you should be fine. No need for studded tires (for now). Just bring the studded tires with you when you come to Duluth just in case
Enjoy your ride,
JD
I just skied out at Hartley, I wish I would have brought my bike instead.
Swamp loop is near 100%
Fisherman is 80% or so - Fairly well packed but a bit rough.
Guard rail 70% - I wasn't actually on the guard rail just went up to the fork bfore the powerlines.
I am taking the bike out there tommorrow.

Any of you who have biked hartley lately. The snow is packed for sure, should I use studded tires or not?

Studs are definetly not needed. I was just out there today. The guard rail is still pretty tough to ride. Rough and skinny. Swamp loop is really good as stated earlier.

Today, at 10 am the condition for riding was perfect. The temp just below 30F, not too cold for riding, the trail was not slushy it was compact. No need for the heavy studded tires. I biked without putting my foot off the pedal except to giveway to hikers with their unleshed dog(s). Sunday may be different as the temp may be above 30s. Expect the trail to be slushy.

hiked most of the wet/mud spots, saw several bikers yesterday morning. Today it will be soaked again from yesterdays rain. Some downed trees had been cut.

Any word on the condition of Hartley? I'll be making my way up there this weekend and would love to check out all of that new trail you guys built.

wet in a few low spots. [the usual suspects...] rest of trail should be dry/tacky and rockin'.
