mara and I did our first ever triathlon. It was the Tri-Loppet and consisted of a 5 mile canoe, 3 mile trail run, and 7 miles of mountain biking (uh...not singletrack style). We finished together just under 2 hours and 5 minutes, waaaay better than we expected. When mara talked me into her evil scheme, I was doubtful we could do it. Neither of us are runners and mara had never canoed before. But she twisted my arm......or I had no choice??....:) So I said yes. Then we trained....okay so we ran a few times..not really training. Then we went out in a canoe a couple of times on the lakes. We predicted we would do the canoe portion in 90 minutes and we did it in 57 minutes!!....way cool!! We ran up and down nasty hills for 3 miles in under 35 minutes....which was much better than we expected. Anyway....I am super excited and very proud of mara and myself for doing this and doing it much better than we anticipated.

mara, you rock!!! Thanks for talking me into such great adventures.

nice job Shad (& mara, by proxy!)! That is a very fun race (couldn't pull it off this year, personally, alas) Glad you guys had fun... :)

Hope to see you (and other MORC'ers) at more of these type of events soon (and maybe some short adventure races!)

You can do team relay tris, so have someone else do the running.

I need to put out a big thanks to Salsa Cycles (http://www.salsacycles.com) for hooking mara and I up with geared bikes for this race. We could not have done the soft woodchipped hill climbs as well without their help.

Ah,

I saw you two leaving Lake Calhoun in your Scion on Saturday. I waved and heard Maura comment on my Eric's t-shirt. Then as you drove away I saw some Salsa bikes on your rack. Didn't think you normally rode Salsa.

Good to see you've realized the truth about gears:D:p

Uhm......that would be mara. Yeah, she saw the Erik's shirt and said "Go Erik's".

Can't believe you guys used gears! Lame! Because of this it will be harder for you two to con me into singlespeeding! :D

Congrats on completing your first Triathalon!

Is that a geared bike WITH suspension? What is going on? I thought we wouldn't see that until after the vikings win the superbowl!:etard:

We used gears for two reasons. One, we knew they were not going to use the singletrack and were going to have us go up those wet woodchipped fall line hills. Two, we were not sure how we would feel after a 5 mile canoe and 3 mile hilly off-road run. Hopping on a bike after that, not so easy to do.....especially for the first time doing a tri.

I ended up with full suspension because Salsa didn't have any rigid bikes available in my size. All the El Mariachi's where out on demo, and that is what I wanted...a fully rigid 29er!

We didn't want to end up like this. We rode the entire course.......again...thanks goes out to Salsa for the loaner geared bikes.

Now back to fully rigid singlespeeding.....:)

Congrats! Now that you two are warmed up, you should come up to Elk River on July 14th and do the Off-Road Duathalon (http://www.morcmtb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=20566) I'm promoting at Hillside Park. It's entirely on the sweet singletrack, except for the short shot down a hilly gravel road to loop back for each lap. Check it out.

Shad, you did the Dakota 50 on your single, you could've done this no problem on a single speed!

Are you offended that I rode a geared bike?

If so.....:p:p:p

Calm down about the gears, kids. Until I figure out how to steal Mr. Funky-Funky-Chicken's mojo, I won't be doing any road races on a singlespeed either. You pick the right tool for the job.

Besides, I am currently bikeless. Yes, boys and girls, I have indeed cracked another frame -- this one in not one, but two different places. Bob, watch out. There is an up and coming destructive force that may end up rivaling your considerable skills in the bike part annihilation department. . .

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

I am sensing that the singlespeed fad is starting to wane.

Nope. I'm seriously thinking of replacing the destroyed frame with not just one, but eventually two new singlespeed bikes. If I can figure out how to squeeze blood from a turnip, one of those may even come from a groovy local frame builder.
