Mothership Wit is great...I had a growler of in a few weeks ago when I was out there (it wasn't even being bottled out there at the time). I think they mentioned that it is their summer seasonal for this year.

Actually Old Chicago did have Fat Tire on tap at various times but it was quite a while ago. They would bring it in as one of the beers of the month occasionally. I haven't seen it for quite some time now though at any of our local OC's. I know that when FT caught on and really really got popular NB was having a hard time just making enough to cover the regular distribution areas. Now that Budweiser is making it they seem to have cleared up all distribution problems.......:p

Strange. I was talking to a NB rep that said she was never aware of any distribution to MN, even limited or "special order". She knew that people like us would "smuggle" beer back to MN but said anything that was for sale would have been illegal.

Having said that, perhaps they were testing the area in some way... I'm sure she wasn't completely aware of what has happened in the past here in Minnesota since she was a rep from CO.

Enough people have said they thought they saw it at Old Chi for me to believe that it happened. If you say it did, then I really believe it ;)

I took a look at my "tasting card" from New Belgium last night. Mothership Wit is only described as "an organic wheat beer" not the summer seasonal.

Is it the start of a problem when I quote myself?

What I've read about this beer makes me think I'll enjoy it. Less hoppy than some wheats from the US, which is why I typically like European wheats WAY better. (Hoegaarden being the best, with many german versons being a close second) I wasn't a huge fan of sunshine wheat, so maybe this one will be better. I'm excited to try it. Strange that their web site has no mention of it.

A few reviews:

Appearance: Pretty much what you'd expect in a witbier; cloudy gold, ample head and lacing.

Taste & smell: Yeast comes through pretty strongly in the smell, followed by coriander and citrus. For being brewed in Colorado it has a very authentic Belgian wit aroma - nicely done. The taste is spicy, tangy and earthy. Surprisingly complex for a beer of 4.8% ABV.

Mouthfeel & drinkability: Crisp, mellow and light on the tongue but without the compromise of flavor. A great summer beer, and organic to boot.

The Beer: In traditional Belgian Wit fashion this beer is brewed with orange peel and coriander, and weighs in at a session worthy 4.8% alcohol. The beer pours a pale hazy straw color capped with a half inch frothy stark white head. The head does a decent job of sticking around through most of the beer. The nose is of oranges, bananas, coriander, cloves, and yeasty dough. The mouth is of sour lemons, sourdough bread, and oranges. Very zesty, very refreshing, great tasty summer beer.

I am huge fan of Hoegaarden and really enjoyed the Mothership (we'll be picking some up tomorrow). The reviews are very good, I agree with them. The alcohol % seemed higher but the growler was consumed while camping at Rocky Mtn Nat'l park (9,000 ft altitude).

I did manage to spend $86 on two cases of beer though. There was easily 250 (conservative estimate probably) people that went through the door by 9:00am. When we got there at 8:20 we had to wait outside for about 15 minutes because the store was full.

The 12 packs are $39.48 plus tax. But they are 22oz. each. So if you figure that's 264oz. of beer that's $0.15 per ounce. Compare that to a 6 pack of a good craft beer at $7.99 and that equals $0.11 per ounce so yes a little high. But hey this only happens once in a lifetime right??? :eyeroll:

The story behind distribution here is that they did bring Fat Tire into Minnesota back in 1993 but it only was around for a little over a year because they couldn't keep up with distribution. So yes it was here. The cool part is that the poster we got is titled:

Commemorative

Slightly off-topic:

This month there is an article in Popular Science about a company that thinks they can make gasoline out of algae. If it pans out, this could be a very promising technology, since Algae only needs sunlight and CO2 to produce and the farms can be located in non-ideal areas, like adjacent to power plants.

Anyway, the founder and main scientist is a fan of New Belgium brewing, and has made a deal with them. New Belgium is going to supply the high-grade CO2 from the brewery, to be used in the algae growing process of the prototype facility.

I thought that was cool. New Belgium is trying to be environmentally friendly, and willing to walk the talk. It's cool to also see them participating on the research side.

I'm curious as well. I wouldn't think it would replace a wheat beer.. and nobody is really going to pull Summit I wouldn't think.. at least long term (that would be like places in Denver pulling Fat Tire)

Blue moon pushed out Hoegaarden as a cheap crappy alternative so I have no love lost for it, but I'd hate to see places without at least one on tap.

How about Leinies... they can pull that off tap and nobody would care, right? :p

It depends on which distributor has Fat Tire. They would drop one of there beers and replace it. I haven't heard who has it. One of the bars that I clean taps for is promoting that Fat Tire is coming on tap, so when I go there next time to clean them, I'll ask the manager which distributor has it. I had a Mothership Wit last night (thanks Dan!) and I must say it jumped up to a very close #2 on my favorite wheat beer list.

I was actually very surprised at how good it was. So many brewers claim that they brew in the style of one European country or another, but most fall short because they use a varaiety of hops from the US, or don't find a good balance.

This one definitely got it right. Nicely balanced hops, perfect amount of orange and spices. I almost would have thought I had a Hoegaarden in my hand. This is actually the first beer from NBB that tastes at all like it could have been from Belgium.

The only problem I found was a slightly strange aftertaste. (due to the organic nature perhaps?) Not at all an issue that would keep me from buying this beer. I'll be looking for it today after work. I hope they keep this one distributed here!

Spoke to a guy at Byerly's Liquors tonight. He said that there was a "distributor issue" that kept him from getting Fat Tire until next week. He then indicated he would still have to "cross the river" to get it.

Not sure what that means...

I had a Mothership Wit last night (thanks Dan!) and I must say it jumped up to a very close #2 on my favorite wheat beer list.

I was actually very surprised at how good it was. So many brewers claim that they brew in the style of one European country or another, but most fall short because they use a variety of hops from the US, or don't find a good balance.

I agree! The Mothership Wit is really good. And, I am not much of a wheat/white beer fan likely due to the fact that I have not had many good options over the years.

The 1554 is good too, but nothing like what I recall from one long day Brugge. Anyone else do the Straffe Henrick (sp?) brewery tour there? My wife and I also got into a few local brews at a pub that blew us away in taste and AC.

The Eden Prairie liqour store across from Cub has Fat Tire, 1554, and Mothership Wit. Also had a bunch of those posters still when I was there last night.

I really like the Mothership Wit. It's missing the bitter taste I don't like...:)

I like Fat Tire and have that too, but I think this Mothership Wit. is going to be one of my faves!

Speaking of good beer, I am drinking a Surly Cynic Ale out of the can right now. Canned beer never taste so good! :) Yeah, it has a slight bitter taste, but not as much as the other two they offer. Try it!

Glad to have both New Belgium and Surly in town!! We gots good beer now!

I was told from the guys at the Cellers on Cliff that New Belgium has not picked a distributor south of the MN river. It could take a couple of months to finalize. SOOOOOOOO have to head north of the river to get it. :banghead:

Ok, that makes sense. I suppose places like MGM and Byerly's can get it from their other stores, thats what he meant by having to go get it on the other side of the river.

It would be nice to email NBB and ask, but their email address is not working. Their web site hasn't been updated in like years either. I guess you can't be good at everything.

... this confirms why I haven't seen any Fat Tire in Mankato yet.

I'm actually quite disappointed in New Belgium's Minnesota "release"... or at least their communication on their release. Why on earth would they leave out part of the entire state like that. Add to that, most stores are selling the bombers by the bottle (not case) so prices are more like $42 for 12. luckily there are some that give a 10% discount on a 12... but still, thats spendy.

I almost went to Cellars in Woodbury today to grab a 12 of Mothership but couldn't get myself to drive the 20 minutes just for beer. <SIGH>Whats wrong with me!

One would think if you wanted to introduce yourselve into an area you'd have screaming deals and not make it hard to get. Maybe thats part of their plan... the stuff probably sells itself at any price.

The only relief I have for now is that my job requires me to go out to Idaho every two weeks. This area picks up micro brews from both the mid-west and west coast. The gas stations have a better beer selection than any store in MN - no joke.
