It's been more than a year, I think, maybe two, but yesterday afternoon I got a bug up my butt to build up my old RockHopper frame with a 9 speed casette and rear der. I put a front der on and set the limit screws only so it would hold the chain on the single 34t ring and that worked pretty well! I've been thinking for a while about having a 1x9 ride so this was a nice experiment for that.
I wanted to have a ride with gears for my trip to Montana and I felt more comfortable about leaving my slightly rusted '99 RockHopper frame locked up unattended on the car rack in Deadwood, SD than my brand new, shiny, green 1x1.
I test rode it at Theo last night and it was pretty fun! The whole chain slap on the chainstay thing certainly made an annoying return. But, it allowed me to play around with different ratios on the fly. I was surprised to find that 34:14 is actually a pretty nice ratio for Theo.

Why limit the front der?
It's been a while since I've ridden in MT but I do remember the granny gear being a nice feature at the end of the day on a big climb. If you got it why not use it?

I totally passed a guy riding a SS last night, too. I guess that proves it: geared riders are better than SS riders. ;)

Let me tell you a story:
When I was in college I wrote for the school paper and every year we'd do an April Fools edition that was like The Onion. All fake stories and fake photographs. It was fun.
One year we decided every photograph had to have one dead body. Our chief copy editor, Cole, volunteered.
Being this was early April in Moorhead there was plenty of ice-cold standing water about and one picture was outside. We thought it'd be cool to have a body floating face-down in the ice-cold water.
Cole was fairly nervous, as you can imagine, and just before shooting the photo he was in the cold water on his hands and knees. He shouted to the photographer, Kristine, "Are you SURE you're ready? You're not going to mess with the focus or the F-stop or shutter speed or anything like that? You can just snap the photo immediately so I can get right back up ... RIGHT?"
She kept her word, the photo was shot and all was good. People enjoyed the spoof edition a lot that year.

I guess this means that his brain cells aren't completely obliterated.
There's still hope for getting Chris on gears and suspension. First we have to gently move his thinking slightly to the right, until he understands that science can make the world a better place.
