View Full Version : Why Doesn't MNSCS Advertise?

Or I guess I should say why doesn't MNSCS take advantage of free advertising? I know it is free to have your race listings in DirtRag and other sites and magazines but I have never seen anything in there. I saw that it is listed online @ velonews when I just checked but hadn't seen it before. I figure you would want as much exposure as possible for these races.

Just my $0.02.

Really? Huh, I wouldn't have guessed. Well if MNSCS needs help submitting to places next year I would be glad to help out.

Yeah, Pete, don't you know that all volunteer organizations don't know how to take suggestions for improving themselves?

Pete was talking about free advertising. All it takes is trying to get local media outlets interested in running a story on the races. Cost: $0.00

All it takes is someone willing to put together a story, get all the race directors to sign off on it, edit, repeat, contact various media outlets, and maybe get something published. Cake. I can't imagine why people aren't chomping at the bit to do this for the series.

Pete, it is a good idea and I'm sure the series director would greatly appreciate your help. So would MORC -- more riders means more money to spend on trails.

Chris, I'm reminded of a Minister of Propaganda I once knew who could write a really excellent PR story once you asked him one or two or twelve times and threatened flaggelation. . . ;)

I tease, but it does take a willing, committed person to follow through. Even free advertising isn't really free when you consider the time and effort involved.

I know when I worked for the Winona Daily News I'd always put in a story submission for covering the race. Some years they'd even send out a reporter for a story.

I would be giddy to the point of convulsions to publish race stories in the MORC newsletter – before and/or after. If somebody writes 'em, I'll get 'em inked.

We take advantage of as much advertising as we have time to set up before the series. Mailings with posters and fliers go out to around 200 regional bike shops. I don't think many get put up unfortunately. We also advertise in silent sports, velonews, and a few others that are slipping my mind right now. If someone wants to volunteer coordinating the advertising next year that would be great.

Matt-

I would be more than happy to help out with the series. Let me know when you start the planning for next year.

when i was with coggs, i never relied too much on the series to pimp the duluth races. i'd throw them into velonews, dirtrag and any of the mags that had race listings. tha way i knew our races would be out there for people to see.

This is somthing we need. Someone who's sole responsibility is to go after advertising/sponsors. I'm sure you would be welcomed.

Another aspect is simply the numbers. Unfortunately it's the chicken or the egg. Potentiol sponsors want to see big numbers before they throw in thier support. On the flip side I understand that it's hard to get the numbers back up without a WOW factor. I know for me in Red Wing most of the local buiseness owners couldn't careless about mtn biking regardless of the numbers.

As this is my last year a R. D. I hope to see this whole thing get allot bigger.
