Have been riding down in the TC the past 3 weekends. Great trails, great weather...I will not miss Duluth a bit. Have no clue why I left the TC in the first place. I think if we are lucky it will 60 degrees...if we are lucky. I have been getting a lot of crap lately for wanted to leave. Mostly hear it from the dorks that have lived here all there whole life and have never lived anywhere else, it is sad really. Did I forget to mention the weather is much better donw here. Peace.
HAHA, you must have been riding the wrong trails up there. Duluth offers some of the best FR/DH spots in the state.
different strokes for different folks.

Based on the grammar I'm seeing, you must not have been taking advantage of any of the fine schools up here either (haha).
We definitely don't get spoiled by over-manicured trails in Duluth, but when we go ride the metro we can kick ass all day for sure. Anyhoo, enjoy your drive through the city on your way to ride. I think I'll leave my car at home and bike to the trail. Peace.

Over-manicured? :eyeroll:
Sounds like those from Duluth need some education on how it is down here. ;)

Seems like the comments are more around the "weather"?

I was just referring to how Duluth trails are pretty rugged compared to a lot of the riding down there. More roots, ect... Don't get me wrong in any way though, I'd love to have a well developed trail like Leb up here and I try to get down and ride it a couple time a year. Peace from the NorthEast

There is some truth to that.... no worries. I have a permanent scar on my leg from a slippery root up in Duluth that reminds me of this quite often... ;)

I work 4 blocks away from Lake Superior. My commute's 15 minutes. Any crime no matter how small makes the news. I live an 8 minute ride from Munger Trail, 20 from Mission Creek trails and Spirit. COGGS' Powder Monkey is a 10 minute drive away. My son's little league field borders Hartley which means at least 30 minutes of riding before most games. Yeah, I'm a real dork for living here.
I leave for a conference in Minneapolis at noon. Got my Trek in my cube. I'm pedaling to Theo Wirth this evening and will savor the freshly manicured trails.
BTW, is that 6pm group ride still on?

Ben hates you.(face of jealous rage) Duluth has to be one of the best midwestern cities other than perhaps somewhere in the UP, unfortunately I don't think you can actually find a job in the UP. Just my opinion as a hiker/biker/skier/general nature enthusiast.

Plus you're a bridge span away from the cultural mecca of Superior.

As a UMD grad I was sad when I had to leave Duluth. But there are no jobs for an engineer there! Still miss it except the weather there is miserable. It brings me back whenever it is 40 and foggy here! Like John I also have a scar from going over my handlebars at Hartley! The trails there are an adventure.

I love Duluth for many reasons! Great trails, some great people (mainly Kurt, Jay, and Co.), and the nature up there just blows my mind. In the winter, some of the best XC Skiing is up there too!
Duluth and the surrounding area rocks!
Would I ever live there?? Nope!....:)

I would live up there if I could find a job, but techy jobs up there that pay well are few and far between.

If I could find a job that paid anything close to what i'm making now, I'd move in an instant. I hate living in the cities.

hey now... no waxin on superior!!! we have a skatepark that's worth talkin about... compared to duluth's that is. we have our share of hidden trails here and there, and not to mention pokegema, easy yet extremely chalenging because of roots, stumps, bridges on corners, cricks... it goes on. plus we have a trail that goes from superior down to ashland, might take a few hours there and then more back, but it's a full dayer filled with long... straight... boring... road style rideing...

I think I figured out the talk about manicured trails. The singletrack I rode in Minneapolis this week was all straight and paved with painted lines and bike stencils. No tree roots. Only light rail tracks. Majestic pigeons strutting in their natural habitat. The trail signage was especially impressive. Big reflective signs reading "Marquette Ave. S" and "Plymouth Avenue Bridge." We've got nothing like that in Duluth. ;)
Weather was too wet for Theo so I rode around the river. Saddle time is saddle time and anything's better than a hotel fitness center.

I graduated from UMD as well, I completely understand the "manicured" statement, and others that have posted in Duluth's favor... but I now take both sides.
The first time I rode at Leb I was very suprised to see a sign warning of a 15in rock ahead... or telling me a bridge is X and the path around it is easy... ect... my first thought was 'amusement park'. Riding in duluth you could park your car (or ride) up on Hawk's Ridge or any other park and just make your own way down choosing deer/snowmobile/hiking trails... if you encountered a 3 foot rock you just did what you wanted too with it, there are definetly no signs warning of every single obstacle ahead.
I understand in a metro area like this the volume of riders is phenomenal, and the trail systems are great, and there are also a lot of numnuts who think they can ride anything but really don't 'think' at all... so the signs are good for them I guess.
I only began Mt.Biking 5 years ago when I realized Hartley had trails and it was 4 blocks from my college rental. From there you realize what you can and can't ride in Duluth whether its posted one way or another. You create your own loops amongst twisting, turning, splitting maze like trails.. then it gets fun.
So yeah, I miss Duluth and for anyone who likes to put time into discovering hidden difficult trails it is a great place to be. But if you want buy a book, read reviews, follow directions, have toilets, park in a lot, follow signs, overcome man made obstacles, the TC is great as well.
I'm moving to Glenwood Springs/Aspen/Rifle CO and intitially thought I'd be overwhelmed with trails there... only to find out they have very little published on trails. But I'm sure, just like Duluth they are there. I hope.:cryin:
So if anybody is looking for a hook-up a few hours from MOAB, 2 hours from fruita, 35mn from Aspen, 45mn from Vail... catch me in the dark orange XTERRA I'm moving out with my fiancee' in July, we'll both be teaching.

That is part of the problem with Duluth trails. Nothing is marked....we should not be able ride where ever. I hear a from Duluth riders that go down south(TC's) and kick ass all day long. What? Am I to assume riding **** trails makes you a better MTB'er? Somebody please clarify.

Can't answer that. My chances to ride TC trails were rained out this week. I'm still a newbie and am a long way from kicking ass in any city.
We can go back and forth about why our cities and trails suck or don't suck. Duluthians have great trails mostly to ourselves. We also have ATV damage & snowstorms in May. Point is I live here, therefore I ride here. Can I really complain with routes like this within sight of my house? http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/mn/duluth/433449873 (http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/mn/duluth/433449873)

Somebody please clarify.
clarify i will... when your rideing up here, your style is completly different from down in the citys. up here, ever corner your lookin at rocks, roots, trees... pesky dear... even bears sometimes, along with the things here and there that us locals decide would make it better.
down there... it's a hole nother story. sure you can fly fast as hell with no worrys, but whats the fun in that? not tryin to put any trails down, but i'll use leb as an example... i rode my bike there, expert loop was like the single track for our races up here. nothing really to tricky, yet things enough that could make you get off and walk. everything is marked, so weres the risk/addrenalin rush that you normally wouldn't have when you don't know what's around the corner?

haha, it's easy with obstacles that could put you in the hospital, put it that way, you just don't see them coming so they suprize you, makes it more fun
