Trail: Lebanon Hills

Route: Beginner-Intermediate-X-XX-Intermediate Out:

Total Ascent/Decent: 682' Distance: 7.25 miles (not including the new XX section, which adds distance and climb)

Equipment: Garmin Edge 305, May 6 @ 3:39pm 2007

Here is the graph of Leb:

Trail: Murphy Hanrehan

Route: Beginner-Intermediate-Expert-Intermediate-Beginner

Total Ascent/Decent: 668' Distance: 9.02 miles

Equipment: Garmin Edge 305, May 26 @ 4:35pm 2007

Here is the graph of Murphy (same basic scale as the Leb one):

Here is an interesting comparison between the Murphy and Leb Elevations in the same scale:

http://www.morcmtb.org/photopost/data/500/MurphyLebElevation.jpg

The trails obviously don't start at the same elevation. What I wanted to show here was how both trails started and finished, so I removed the elevation scale.

The leb graph does not show the new XX section, which added some climbing.

Disclaimer: The only section that was doubled up on the Leb graphs above was the last part of the beginner loop from the exit of the Intermediate to the Lot. This graph does not show the elevation of the Leb X "out" section, so is not a complete count of the amount of climb and decent of all trails.

Murphy had no doubled up trail except the expert loop filter and did not include the section of the trail not open all season.

Removing duplication, Leb is currently about a 2 mile shorter riding lap than Murphy. (not including the haunted forest area thats closed most of the year at Murphy)

My GPS could be off by as much as 10-20'. Grand total Murphy and Leb, when including all trail sections and no duplication, will be fairly similar in total climb and decent (but with a completely different feel)

I need to re-do the trails a few times to be sure this is all real accurate. I think my Leb lap was off a bit as it did show more climbing than decent, but I did start at the beginner and ended at the high end of the lot.

I will try get more trails and combine them into this thread. I don't at all want this to be a who likes what discussion between trails, only an FYI. The only reason I have these two shown is that they are the only two I have currently.

Would be interesting to see Afton in this... ;)

Just to be funny, I'll also try pull together the Apex trail from the Denver Front Range to show how they do it out west...

Afton has a 350' vert. A lap is about 3 miles ( last time I raced it) and we reached the summit twice with numerous smaller climbs in between. The second summit wasn't from the base, though. I'm guessing 700' or so every lap. Buck Hill used to send you to the top 3 times a lap back in the day, and we raced 6 laps. 18 climbs. It was over 7000' of climbing in 24 miles.

I have 305 profile plots of Memorial, Mammoth, Salem, Theo, Leb, Jail, Terrace (i think) Battle Creek (My route around it) and River Bottoms.

I did not get one of Murphy yesterday due to a seat post bolt failure on my buddies bike.

I do not have Plum creek as I got rained out.

I might have a hillside, Milaca also, not sure.

I also have plots for alot of the trails around Omaha, and KC.

I still need to redo them and clean them up a bit or go get all new data.

You have my email address.... ;)

Actually what would be useful would be the raw GPS data. I believe it can be shared so that the data generated looks consistent.

In doing the Murphy Leb stuff I noticed how my software would scale differently for each trail... which is ok on their own, but when looking at all the trails together it can be deceiving. Sadly I stuck to a 20' elevation grid, and tried to keep the distance (left to right) comparable. Might not work out for all our trails tho.

I'm sure they have this stuff for PC's. I wish I had a GPS so I could play around with it.

There are probably 100 route planners, but MapMyRide has the elevation in a pop up tab at the bottom.

The 24 hr course at Afton has close to 1200' of climbing total per lap. That might change a bit with some of this summer's work. Nice job John, when you want to check out Afton, get a hold of me and we'll go , my treat.;)

I did a quick GPS of Lebanon Hills today and included the two new trail sections that we plan to open in 2008. The results were:

Ascent/Decent: Going from 682' to 755'
Distance: Going from 7.25 miles to 8.3 miles (with another approved mile+ on the way in 09 or 10)

Again, same Garmin Edge.. and I was hike-a-bike on the two new areas, so I'm sure things will change slightly once the trails are actually completed. The small area of beginner loop that was duplicated is about equal in distance to the x out that I did not count, so its a fairly good overall trail distance and profile.

I'll post the new graph once I get time to load up my GPS software...

Here's a professionally done profile of Murphy. The numbers on the x-axis are the trail markers.

Any other elevation profiles out there for local trails?

Excellent information! Thanks for posting that.

We'll be GPSing Leb with Dakota County's professional gear sometime soon.. we were going to do it this spring but now it might have to wait for fall. Nothing like getting that kind of accuracy to really show good elevation. Nice work!

I'd love to see some other trails.

Having ridden out in Dever's front range all week Leb felt particularly flat today... They measure their trails in thousands vs. hundreds of feet, but we do what we can with what we have.

I have GPS elevations for all the trails at Battle Creek. But I'm out of town for the weekend and won't have access to them until Monday PM.

I've got a bunch for Hillside from last weekend, but I think we were sessioning the Expert stuff every lap, so it would have a bunch of overlapping. I'll see what I can dig up, or I'll get a fresh one on Monday when we're out there for trailwork.

Here is the appx. new elevation of Leb once the two new trails are in place. The new one has a slightly different graph size. I will have a better one by fall. I believe the new exit trail is between miles 6 and 7.25, and the upper bypass alignment is between 3.2 and 3.5

Ascent/Decent: Going from 682' to 755'

Here's some data for Afton from a couple days ago. There are still a few closed bits, so this doesn't cover everything. But it does cover the majority of the climbing, over 1100' a lap. This image is a little hard to read. Any tips on how to get a bigger image?

I would love to see the BC chart. Of course, it could change a lot depending on what you ride.
