I don't know if that is any better then riding around the obstacle, and I guess doing that could classify me as a wimp. With people around I would rather just get over it and get back to burning through the singletrack part of the trail and hit the obstacles inside the natural flow of the trail without the audiance.
It messes me up also when there are a bunch of people around. I walk it and make it up at the log. :)

A lot of people have an issue with an audience at the advanced qualifier... it's only natural. Unfortunately I think it will always be a gathering/hang-out spot.
Be calm, confident and patient... it's a good opportunity to get used to an audience.
At least with an audience... if you get hurt, you won't be injured AND alone. ;)

Sorry, I didn't mean to call it a pallet ride, but I didn't know what it was called.
I thought there used to be big logs randomaly spaced, perpendicular, all along the qualifier, so you couldn't just ride around it like John mentioned. Or, am I dreaming that?

There used to be more brush there (the area has become more open and compacted), but the logs have always been clear of the middle section.

On the way in to the X loop, I made it to the middle section before losing my balance. Luckily, I was able to click out and jump off to the side so I didn't crush the essentials. Made it on the way out though, probably because my back was to the people hanging out there.

I think going out is easier than going in. Slight incline maybe going in... Can't really say, i just no getting out usually ain't a problem, and coming in is.

The qualifier is on an incline... it's harder to get into the advanced loop than it is to go from advanced to intermediate.

Where is the trail located? I want to take my kiddies this upcoming weekend. Is it marked so I don't get lost?

Its marked well, and the trail review will show you the way.

I rode Murphy Hanrehan for the first time last week and wanted to say thanks for all the work that went into the trails. Fun stuff!
I had read the writeup before going there but most of it was over my head since I'd never been there before. At the intermediate-to-advanced qualifier I rode next to it, not remembering that you're supposed to walk or ride on the obstacle itself so the vegetation doesn't get trampled. If you really want people to go over it I recommend blocking off the easier route or putting up a sign.
Anyway, I had a great time and look forward to riding there again soon.

Thanks! Everyone involved appreciates the support, and enjoys hearing that people like the trail.
Some trail users go over the advanced loop qualifier, some go around it... either way is cool - as long as all the routes to the advanced loop are difficult, and it communicates the fact that you are entering a more challenging, higher risk trail.
It's pretty much a given that a feature in a location like that will cause an impact on the surrounding area. As long as the impact doesn't expand beyond it's current level, we're OK.
Additional signage will be one topic that is discussed this fall/winter.

That make sense to me. The only reason I mention it is the MORC trail review specifically asks people to walk or ride across the qualifier so the vegetation doesn't get trampled. It sounds like the review should be edited to take out the part about crossing only on the qualifer. As a qualifier goes I think it's doing its job and don't mean to imply that warning signs are necessary.
Once again, thanks for the trails. I like twisty singletrack.

I also thought the trail was very well designed and offers some true cross country type riding without allot of the man-made challenges. To anyone that was involved, thanks for such a great place to ride. Plus it offers a great cardio workout if pushed at speed.

There are some new rocks at marker 63 on the advanced loop.

WOW, was there some seismic activity in the area recently?
I can't wait to see this and was looking forward to riding tomorrow. And now its raining... Thank you so much all your hard work you must have put in today!

Went out around 2pm and it was perfect. I tried that large rock jump at 63, it's hard to get any speed to launch off of it.

Agree, I think we somehow need a better line comming and going from it.

We'll be working on that section some more next spring (maybe this fall), so we can take another look at it. I haven't made my mind up on it yet... I still need to ride it some more.
I do remember one guy... the last guy in a trio of 29ers (singlespeeds, I think)... that got some nice air off it last Sunday.
Once people get more practice on it and the new line gets worked in, we may find that it's OK the way it is since it is an expert feature.
Options would be to make the corner before it less sharp, or bring the rock (and the trail) a few feet down the hill.

I loved the new section. The rock garden needs to be twice as long, maybe even longer. The ramp over the log is a big time improvement. Didn't do the big jump though. I'm not a big air guy.

Today during trailwork we fixed the two mud pits at the end of the advanced trail. Three Rivers provided us with rock (THANKS Three Rivers!!), and we hauled it in and placed it.
Here are pics of the finished product (sorry about the focus):

I've been dying to come out to the 'new' trails for a long time. The last time I was on Hanrehan, there was only the cross country swoopers. Wow, what a difference. Once again MORC has created a masterpiece. Well cut trail with good flow and a cross-country feel. No unworkable climbs and just right descents. Besides some off-camber fast turns, no gotcha jumps or corners.
Maybe not quite the variety of Lebanon, but overall it might be the best trail in the area.
I'm gonna go to work on this trail for the rest of the summer. Once again, thanks to MORC and those who maintain this trail.

Thanks David... all the MORC volunteers and Three Rivers staff that got this project started and/or have helped design, build and maintain the trail really enjoy hearing this type of feedback.
If by "I'm gonna go to work on this trail for the rest of the summer," you mean that you'll be riding it a bunch this summer... have fun!! Hope to see you on the trails!
Just remember to check the weather and the MORC forums... sometimes the rainfall amounts can be very different between Hopkins to Savage (the trail is closed when it is wet or muddy). We work hard to keep the Murphy trail conditions up to date on the MORC website.
If you meant that you'd like to help with trailwork... we'll be there every Sunday in August at 10am. After that, we'll probably switch to the fall schedule (1st and 3rd Sundays at 10am). Join us for a session... it's a good time.
Thanks again!

Pete,
I am curious what the IMBA guys had to say after riding Murphy last Sunday. I would think they would give it high marks all around. The trail is a perfect example of IMBA standards.

I can't speak for conversations held with Pete, but I did ride with Kelly and sat and talked with both her and hubby (Collins) at the barbecue and they were very positive about Murphy all around. I know they had a good time riding, in fact Kelly asked how long it would take her to ride the black again and if she had time before the barbecue.

Hey Bob,
Unfortunately I didn't get much time to talk to them... although we did take a look at (and discuss) the skinny/technical feature being built... Collins said it looked good.
The only other feedback I heard was secondhand and it was about the double berms in the woods (the exit on the lower berm needs some work).

I can see that. It can get pretty sketchy if you don't have your line right on the exit on both the first and second in the woods. I guess it's kind of a battle to balance a great exit and to not hold water.

What is the best way to access MH from Cty 42 right now or is the construction complete?

Go to Burnsville parkway and head in from there. If you stay on it, it takes you right by the park.

Be sure to make the turn at Southcross Drive to say on Burnsville Pkwy.
Personally, I think Burnsville Pkwy and 42 are equivalent, even with the construction.

I would think that would be very dependant on when you are going. I sat in that 42 mess for an awful long time during rush hour not too long ago.

Oh yea, it's probably worth mentioning that I rarely travel to or from trails during rush hour.

I usually return on 35W north because 169N is usually akin to a fisting with rusty sheet metal screws.

Trail was in exquisite condition with just enough moisture to test the limits of tire adhesion.
My only regret is not riding there more often because I fly past nearly every one of the features nestled off to the side of the main line.
THANK YOU trail crew.

It is still posted closed. I drove it Saturday to see how far along it was. It's fully paved, but no lines yet. Should be open soon I hope.
To answer your question, I don't know when it's going to reopen. Sorry. I'll call the city of Savage tomorrow if I get a chance.

The connector trail after marker 78 is now built (it is shown on the map, but hadn't been built until today). We'll have to go back and do some finishing work, but it is rideable.
If you want to cut about 1 mile off your lap, take the right turn that is just a short distance past marker 78 (right after the bridge). The connector is a 2-way trail, so if you want to get extra mileage you can re-ride the prairie and/or seasonal loop.
