This thread is for trail conditions only (wetness/dryness of trail, trees down, damaged trail feature, etc.) It is a resource for trail users (and the land manager) to quickly find details about the current trail conditions. It will be moderated to keep it on topic (if it's off topic, please start a new thread).

Check the date of the posts - THIS IS AN OLD POST!!

For the most current trail conditions check the most recent post.

When To Ride, And When Not To...

- Trails should not be used during wet weather, or when the trail is soft or muddy.

- Trails are open if the trail is firm and the surface will not be disturbed by foot or bike travel.

- PLEASE be patient if the trail isn't ready.

- Riding wet trails damages the trail by creating ruts that increase erosion.

- Trails are typically too wet to ride for 18-24 hours after a significant rainfall.

Thanks!!

Current Conditions 5/25 9:00 am

Trail is too wet to ride with yesterday's rains.

Three Rivers crews are working on the finishing touches of the trail and will give a trail report later in the day.

I'd say plan for later in the weekend... don't get your hopes up for today.

I just got off the phone with the Three Rivers crew that is out there working... the trail is pretty wet. The trail is not rideable, and may not be rideable at all today.

I will post updated trail conditions at about 3pm.

Shorty

The Three Rivers crew said it should be ready in a couple hours.

Please wait until about 5 or 6pm to do a lap.

It's brand new trail, so please take it easy. The tread needs some compacting... it could easily get ripped up if you push the limits.

Thanks!!!!!

Trail was damp - the small blocks were packing up with mud in spots, but I don't think it was doing damage - the trail is fresh and just needs some good packing in. I think opening it now and riding it in was a good move.

Be aware that the trail is brand new - its not at all worn in and is very slow right now. Still some face slappers and areas a bit difficult to see the trail (weeds) but that will all sort itself out with traffic in no time!

Shorty

Since the trail is so new and hasn't been compacted, it will not take much rain to make it too wet to ride. The weather people are forecasting thunderstorms for today, so you may get rained out.

Got in a ride this morning just before the real light rain started up. It's sunnying up now and I don't think the light rain we got would have affected the trail much at all.

The trail is soft but I wouldn't classify it as wet :). It's definitely soft due to being totally, absolutely fresh new trail! Judging by the cars already in the lot at 10 a.m. this morning I think it's gonna firm up over this weekend really nice.

I would guess the scattered rain we're getting today wouldn't affect the trail much at all. It was getting downright dusty this weekend and much of it has hardened up a whole lot.

Extremely hard downpour in SW Bloomington for about 5 minutes. Not sure how that'll impact things, or even if it rained at the trail.

The trail was definitely slime-covered this evening. Give it a day or two of no rain and it should be good.

Has anyone checked out the trail today. I have heard it said before that trails dry out faster when it is windy (or am I totally off base on this). I have been out of the country for the last two weeks and need to get on a bike in a bad way! Would love to check out 10 beautiful miles of fresh cut single track.

Made the drive down today. It was a bit slimy in spots and soft shoulders in others. I would give it a full day without rain before gettin' on it. Track is just too new and soft to handle the rain.

Thanks for the update Kirk. You're right about the new tread not being able to handle this rain.

As long as the rains aren't too constant, one good sunny day with wind could do it (hopefully).

Until the trail has had a chance to firm up, you'll want to stay off it. Please be patient, and have the willpower to cancel a ride or cut a ride short if it isn't ready.

Trail was damp last night. There were some areas in the initial Intermediate loop that were probably too wet to be riding, but the expert loop and the last half of the Intermediate were just fine.

As the crew addresses the "line" the trail will come together and the areas where riders are slipping off the trail will go away. Until then, keep your speeds down - especially because I know this is a new trail to us all and we can't know exactly what is around each corner.

Face slappers and arm grabbers are showing up.

Bugs... bugs bugs bugs. Dope up and don't stop for too long. I don't think I've ever inhaled so many bugs before riding a trail. I'm sure the recent rains have not helped this.

Anyone out this AM?

I was out yesterday pm and the trails were a little damp in some areas but mostly just new moist dirt that needed to be rode on.
I wonder if the rain hit the trails today... Was really patchy rain and most of it stuck to the east of 35w. Would like to hit the trails tomorrow if the rain didn't get to them.

Rode it this morning around 7:30. Trail was laid out really well and I'm fired up to have a sweet new trail< 5 minutes from my house. The trails were a little greasy and soft, but not as bad as I expected. Went back to ride again this afternoon and bagged it. The rain was pouring down...probably 30-45 minutes.

With the trail already being greasy and soft, this additional rain will make it too wet to ride. I'd guess at least a day or two of dry weather will be needed before it is open again. As usual...

I live fairly close to Murphy and over weekend we got .25" total and suspect Murphy got same, so not as much as some Metro areas. Murphy appears to not dry out as fast as some of the other trails due to heavy canopy and the soil seems naturally damp in spots.
Must have been folks in yesterday as there are some definite mud tracks/slight ruts in areas....not good.
Today it was a bit greasy in a few of those areas, but with very light treads and good sense I felt it was OK marginally and I made little or no impact with no mud on me or bike after full loop. It would be better tomorrow for sure though.

Not looking good... with the fact that it is such new trail and it is already greasy.

There are a bunch of scattered rain/thunderstorms coming through the cities right now (~3:25pm). They're coming in from the north and heading straight toward Murphy (weather.com radar).

The weather pattern lately hasn't been helpful to Murphy... scattered rains coming through every once in a while keeping it greasy and soft. The trail is new and won't dry out as fast as other trails (especially if it keeps getting riders when it is too soft).

Please stay off the trail until the trail has had time to get drier and firm up.

Three Rivers crews should be removing the downed tree today or tomorrow.

I was out yesterday afternoon for a couple of laps. Trail was in great shape witht the exeption of the GIGANTIC tree that had fallen across the trail on the section heading back towards the start from the expert section. There were actually a few trees that fell right in this area with branches covering the trail. I am guessing TRPD gets out there occasionally to clear this stuff out??

FYI, 154th St is closed at the hwy 27(Allen Blvd) intersection by the Prior Lake/Savage High School. I believe you can still get to the trail from the Burnsville side or obviously the back stone roads to Murphy Lake road. The city of Savage said it will be closed to about the end of August.

Tree down across the trail right before the corner going into the step bridge. I broke off some branches so we could hike over it. Would be a good one for a ramp on both sides to roll over it?

Shorty

Thanks for clearing the branches Jim.

It's about waist high so it's easy to hike-a-bike over it.

The tree is across the trail on the short uphill section before the step bridge, so keep your head up when you're riding the downhill section after trail marker 66.

It should be gone in the next couple days.

Here's weather information for the area. This reporting station is about 1 mile from Murphy:

http://weather.wcco.com/auto/wccoV2/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=KMNSAVAG1

Looks like rain came through the park a few times overnight, and it just got rain again at about 7.
The park got about .5" of rain between last night and early this morning.

I'd guess it MIGHT be rideable later in the day if we don't get more rain.

We'll be out there getting ready for trailwork soon... maybe someone will have a phone with internet access to post current conditions.

The trail was soft until about 1:00 today. The conditions looked great by the afternoon.

A BIG THANKS to all of those people that changed their plans and didn't ride this morning (hopefully you were able to get out and ride later). The trail volunteers appreciate your patience!!

It doesn't seem like a few hours can make a difference, but it REALLY can change that fast. At 10:00 the tread was soft, people were easily leaving marks in the trail, and tires were packed with mud (unfortunately some people chose to ride). By 1:00, after the trail had a chance to dry, riders were returning with clean tires.

The MORC forums and local weather websites will be your best resource when planning rides during questionable weather. A lot of factors go into it... how much rain fell, the humidity levels, how windy it is, how sunny it is after the rain, how dry the trail was before the rain, soil types, etc. Please be patient if it isn't ready.

Since the trail attracts people from all around the metro (and you may not get rain at your house when Murphy gets rain), here is a weather station that is within a mile of Murphy:

http://weather.wcco.com/auto/wccoV2/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=KMNSAVAG1

Also... the trail is MUCH, MUCH more fun to ride when you can get traction. :D

Just got back from a ride that I cut short. Maybe it's just me but it seems the trail is being eroded away. A lot of loose soil in the turns and the negative grades and vegetation growth doesn't help the situation. One good thing is there isn't any standing water but a little moist in low areas.

Trail is mostly dry. Should be perfect tomorrow.

There is a tree down in the intermediate loop right after marker #55. It's in an area where riders don't carry much speed so it shouldn't be a problem, but be aware of it. We'll inform 3RPD to take care of it ASAP.

There are a few turns that are a little loose out there that we will adjust and fix as time permits. Any new trail will have a few issues that need to be worked out once we see how riders handle the trail. For the most part, I think the trail is holding up pretty well, but there will be plenty of fixes and maintenance in the coming months!

Interesting the variance in More difficult between Murphy & Leb. I will go back again. Saw a female with a MORC sticker on the back of her car that finished about the same time as me. It's a tough call at this point... 9am is pretty early. They got some more rain about an hour ago for a total of .15 of an inch. With the high humidity, the relatively low winds, and the fact that the sun is setting soon, I'd be pretty surprised if it was dry by 9am.

It should be great later in the afternoon!! (That's probably not much help to you though). Often waiting just a few hours can make a BIG difference.

There was a tree down across the trail after marker 75. It is farily small and sitting on the ground... easily rideable.

It could probably be moved by two people.

I'll be out there in the next couple days with a handsaw, and can take care of it if it is still there.

Otherwise... Dusty!

Almost 1/2 an inch of rain today at Murphy. It will likely be too wet to ride tomorrow morning, especially since there's a possibility of more rain overnight.

We'll be out at the trail in the morning and try and get an update posted as soon as possible.

It should be ready to ride later in the day.

Thanks!

The area around Murphy recieved anywhere from 1" to 2.75" of rain overnight (the nearest reporting station got knocked out by the storm and has incomplete data at this point).

The trail will be too wet this morning, but with the heat and the wind it should be great later in the afternoon. Based on previous observations, I'd wait until at least mid-afternoon to check on it.

The trail has been taking quite a beating with the dry/dusty conditions... riding it before it has had a chance to dry and get firmed up will only make things worse.

This is a great opportunity for Three Rivers Park Patrol to get out and do some educating about riding wet trails.

As of 11:30pm Saturday evening, Murphy has received a significant rainfall... about 1 1/3" of rain, so far.

With more rain, lower temps, and overcast/cloudy conditions in the forecast, the trail will stay wet longer than it has been lately.

I'd suspect the trail will be too wet to ride tomorrow, maybe longer if the forecast is correct.

I'll contact Three Rivers and recommend they use this opportunity to educate users about riding wet trails.

Looks like a fairly unsettled weather pattern this week, so here's a reminder...

When To Ride, And When Not To...

- Trails should not be used during wet weather, or when the trail is soft or muddy.

- Trails are open if the trail is firm and the surface will not be disturbed by foot or bike travel.

Cool, thanks for the update.

With the strong winds, and the fact that it didn't rain again, it probably made for some decent conditions by this evening. It sounds like the slick/greasy conditions weren't significant.

In general...

Please Use Good Judgment, and Consider the Bigger Picture When Deciding to Ride:

Under slick or greasy conditions, the trail is more susceptible to getting washed out and/or cupped...

This means more maintenance due to accelerated wear on the tread...

Since maintenance and dealing with water flow issues will always come before the fun stuff, planned features like more log rides, rock gardens, elevated ladders, jumps, and berms will get bumped down the list of projects.

If there are a large number of slick/greasy spots, I'd recommend not riding.

Two trees down.

There is also a big tree that got uprooted and took out the edge of the trail near marker 76. Easy to ride around... this section will be cleaned up on Sunday.

A few new spots where the trail got torn up... nothing that needs to be addressed right now, but they'll need to be fixed if/when they turn into wash outs. When the trail is damp and soft, it is very susceptible to getting this type of damage.

Some branches and sticks, and the trail was tacky overall.

With the unsettled weather we're having, here's a reminder:

When To Ride, And When Not To...

- Trails should not be used during wet weather, or when the trail is soft or muddy.

- Trails are open if the trail is firm and the surface will not be disturbed by foot or bike travel.

- PLEASE be patient if the trail isn't ready.

- Riding wet trails damages the trail by creating ruts that increase erosion.

- Trails are typically too wet to ride for 18-24 hours after a significant rainfall.

Thanks!

Murphy received a little over 1/2" of rain throughout the morning today.

If it stays nice the trail should be firm and dry later tomorrow (Tuesday).

Remember, with the cooler temps this time of year the trail takes longer to dry out.

Murphy got rain this morning, and more is on the way.

This week isn't looking good. With off and on rain, and temps in the 40s and 50s, the trail will take much longer to dry out. It will most likely take upwards of 36-48 hours of dry weather after a rain for the trail to be dry enough to ride.

Murphy has been getting rain off and on for the last 24-36 hours. And it looks like it will be like that most of the week... it is likely that the trail will be too wet/soft the entire week. This weekend is looking like it might be great!!

With the cool, cloudy conditions the trail will take longer to dry out.

The trail is still soft in a lot of sections, with a significant number of puddles.

Please allow trails to dry before use.

The trail MIGHT be dry enough to ride this evening.

Otherwise tomorrow should be great as long as it doesn't rain.

I know that nobody wants to post (the parking lot had a lot of cars in it) - I rode from 4-5:30 tonight and the trail was in very good shape. There are puddles on the beginner loop, a few "greasy" corners on the intermediate loop and a very dry almost tacky expert loop. I would definitely recommend riding it before the rain returns...

I cannot speak for the other trails but Murphy drains and drys out really well - I guess it pays to build in wetlands?

I know that nobody wants to post (the parking lot had a lot of cars in it)...

No one should hesitate to post if almost all the trail was firm and riders weren't leaving tracks. Of course there will probably be a handful of puddles in some bad spots, but nearly all the trail should be firm (not soft or greasy) for it to be considered rideable.

If someone is afraid to post they were riding, it probably means they shouldn't have been.

Another reminder...

As the trailhead sign says, "Please allow trails to dry before use."

Shorty

I cannot speak for the other trails but Murphy drains and drys out really well...

That will change with time.

As the trail gets more use, the trail will get more cupped. As it gets more cupped, the more water it holds and the slower it dries. Most importantly, riding the trail when it is soft increases the rate at which this cupping occurs.

If the wear and tear exceeds the ability to keep it maintained, we will see more (and longer) closures.

Additionally, maintenance will always have priority, so increasing the rate of wear and tear on the trail slows down the development of trail features and other fun things...

...and trust me the list of proposed 'fun' projects is as good as it is long. :)

The trail was damp, soft and greasy this evening. Riders were leaving tracks throughout most of the trail. The trail will probably need a few hours of daylight/warmer temps before it is rideable tomorrow.

The trail received almost 1/5" of rain and sleet today.

Trail will likely be too wet for most all of Monday.

It MIGHT be dry enough later in the day if it gets warm and sunny on Monday. The weather forecast doesn't look very good this week, and the trail could easily be too wet until Thursday.

Be careful of the bridges if you are riding in the cold... the frost can make them slippery.

Shorty

The trail was dry in some spots and damp in others. Some areas were slick from the snow.

Studs are not necessary (they would significantly damage the trail at this point).

Nearly all of the bridges were wet and/or snow covered and slippery.

With below freezing nights and daytime temps above freezing, the trail conditions will be fluctuating between frozen and wet until the moisture comes out of the soil (which could take a day or two). The warmer it is, the more likely the trail will be too wet to ride.

As always... the trails are closed when they are wet.

The wet and muddy spots are most likely due to thawing areas of frost. The ground is freezing and these warm days thaw the frost. Cold weather is coming soon and these areas should become more solid. See Pete's advice on when to ride below:

Rode Murphy FatBike today. +5F, sundogs, nice. Apparently snowshoers and deer are the most common winter benefactors of MORC's good work! First ~1.5 miles in to the narrow trick bridge is a veritable Pugsley Freeway many thanks to the snowshoers, no need for even really low psi. After the bridge/junction the snowshoers seem to have gone numerous routes except for the standard left turn up the main outer trail. The normally backwards way, bearing right after the trick bridge, is quite well packed though and even off camber stuff was completely rideable again thanks to the nice ledge put in by the big-shoers. Made it maybe half way and back-tracked due to dusk approaching and the trail mid-section gradually deteriating due to less traffic and high deer post-holing. Would think it should stay quite good at least into Sat. when mushiness might arrive. Very quiet and I did not see any big cat tracks.

With the warmer temps being forecasted this week, the (somewhat) packed snow surface on the trail is susceptible to getting ruts...

...so as Bob said in another thread...

Due to the spring thaw, Three Rivers has closed the Murphy-Hanrehan singletrack trail. MORC will be working with Three Rivers to inspect the trail, and it will re-open as soon as possible.

Please stay off the trail until it has been officially re-opened. The trail should re-open around mid-April.

The parking lot, along with both the enter/exit trails at the trailhead have been gated and signed.

Closure of the trail is obvious.

Use of the trail, even by MORC members "just checking on the trail" will be in violation of Park District ordinance. It has been recommended that the Park Police ticket anyone on the trail during a closure.

Any inspections must be coordinated and approved by Three Rivers supervisors.

During the spring thaw the trail is especially soft and can be very easily rutted. The trail is designed to allow water to run across the trail. Ruts create a cupped trail surface that traps the water on the trail, causing the water to run down the trail which significantly increases erosion. Cupped and rutted trails will also take longer to dry out after a rain.

Responsible trail use is essential to the design of the new trail. The old Murphy trail was closed due to erosion problems... please do your part in ensuring that it doesn't happen again.
