Trail was perfect today except for the above mentioned area, still a mud hole. Not much room to ride around(big no, no):nono:, so it shouldn't get to wide and out of control there I hope. It didn't look too deep until I hit it. SPLASH!!!! mud covered. I think we need a "no wake" sign there;)
Since these spots could be soupy for a while. What is the proper way to get through them? Ride? Run? Walk around them?

I would GUESS if Leb is OK, Murphy would be OK.
We've had sun, wind and low humidity, so even though Murphy got .25" of rain last night, it SHOULD be OK.
Be prepared to cut it short if the trail is still soft.

Ride or walk through them.
Please do not ride/walk beyond the original trail tread since that will widen the trail.

Here is an image with locations of mud pits…
If you give-her hell on the downhill section of 85 and pull like a mother before the crick you might clear the first mud pit, BUT you will probably not make the hard left.

Trail was in good shape this afternoon.
Mud pits are pretty bad... careful at the very end of the advanced trail!!
(Thanks for the map Spencer!).
We will be addressing the mud pits at this weekend's trailwork session.

Trail was getting greasy as we finished trail work. It's probably to wet to ride, with more rain on the way. Best to let her dry up before riding again.
Shorty
05-10-2008, 10:29 PM
The trail received even more rain since trailwork ended... looks like about .25" of rain so far with more on the way.
Trail will most likely be too wet to ride all day on Sunday... there is a lot of moisture in the soil right now. Judging by the forecast, it should be ready on Monday.
A Reminder About When To Ride, And When Not To...
- Trails should not be used during wet weather, or when the trail is soft or muddy.
- Trails are open if the trail is firm and the surface will not be disturbed by foot or bike travel.
- PLEASE be patient if the trail isn't ready.
- Riding wet trails damages the trail by creating ruts that increase erosion.
- Trails are typically too wet to ride for 18-24 hours after a significant rainfall.
Thanks!

Please allow trails to dry before use.

It looks like Leb has been checked and it was still fairly wet. I would guess Murphy is in similar condition as Leb.

Just went on a road ride and got twisted around in a neighborhood and ended up out there and so I hit the beginner trail to check out the rest. The beginner was very dry except for two mud spots towards the end. Lots of people rode around the mud. Also there were more dry ruts than there were on Friday. Probably people who rode it this morning.
I only looked in on the intermediate but it still looked very tacky. Since there are like 4 switch backs right at the start I could see a fair amount of trail. It should be good to go tomorrow though but someone else can make that call
I saw a few cars with racks in the lot so I am sure people were riding it.

Trail is in good shape. The new armor at the mud holes worked great, water was going between the big rocks and trail was not muddy there. I think it was faster than the old way dry! There are a couple wet spots in the usual locations, the prairie heading to the log ride and the beginner trial heading back to the lot.
Go ride before it rains tomorrow!!!

One word: GNATS
I was going to grill burgers tonight but I ate enough gnats to fill my protein quota. There are little clouds of these suckers floating around the trail. Kind of makes it hard to climb a hill while holding your breath. The ride was still a blast though.

Trail was great today!
Surprisingly, there weren't any branches or trees down with the recent wind. Just a couple face-slappers and some dusty corners, otherwise great!
Had a group out yesterday while the skies were looking like they were going to unleash there fury on us. It passed and the breeze came in nice after that. Man, it gets hot and humid back in there.
It was my first time on the new trail, made all the obstacles (most on the first run). The log ride was cool.
All in all the trail is pretty fun. If it wasn't for the drive I'd go out there more often.

Hey Pete,
Any trail updates? Are you still thinking the trail is too wet today?
Pete can answer for sure, but judging by the rain we got in the south metro and at Leb its probably safe to say riding should wait until Saturday. Most trails were probably affected by yesterdays rain.. Friday is probably a good day to stick to the road.

John is right...
With the lack of consistent sun and the high humidity, it'll likely need until Saturday to dry out.
Getting 1/2" to 3/4" of rain overnight would be considered significant, so it will likely take 18-24 hours before it is ready to ride.
Possibility of more rain tonight. If that happens, it will probably be later on Saturday or early Sunday before it is dry enough to ride.

Murphy got more rain tonight, and judging by the forecast it will likely be too wet to ride until late afternoon on Sunday.
Due to the recent storms, there is a good chance there are trees down on the trail (in addition to the one Bill mentioned). Please ride carefully and be ready for downed trees/branches blocking the trail.
If anyone rides Murphy on Sunday... please post here about any downed trees (with location relative to the nearest trail marker). Thanks!!

Murphy got about .10" of rain this evening. Possibility of more rain tonight and tomorrow AM.
Judging by the forecast, the trail will likely be too wet to ride for the rest of the week. Depending on how Tuesday and Wednesday turn out, the trail MIGHT be dry enough for an evening ride on Wednesday (but the forecast isn't looking good).
It looks like late Saturday and Sunday are the best bets for riding this week.
Here's a reminder about the trail rules at Murphy:

I'm pretty sure that it is too wet to ride right now. It rained again last night since Pete's 9pm post, and has been misting (in Eagan) most of the day. Looking at the report, we will be lucky to get in any trail rides anywhere this week.

Taking a trimmer to wild parsnip is not a good idea unless you are very careful. A trimmer will spray the oils all over you and the surrounding area.
The weeds/grass in the prairies has been brought up and is being discussed. The area will be taken care of when the time and resources become available.

Murphy got .10" - .15" of rain this evening. The trail will need some time to dry out tomorrow morning.
The trail should be rideable by Saturday afternoon if we don't get any additional rain.
Here's a reminder about the trail rules at Murphy:
When To Ride, And When Not To...
And as the signs at the trailhead say:
Please allow trail to dry before use.

It might be worthwhile to clarify these statements:
Trails should not be used during wet weather, or when the trail is soft or muddy.
- With the exception of a few small problem spots, the vast majority of the tread should not be soft and your tires should not be leaving a noticeable mark in the soil. Soft trail is also referred to as slick, slimy or slippery.
Please allow trail to dry before use.
- The trail should be tacky before you ride it. If the trail is mostly damp, it is not dry and the trail is considered closed.
To avoid stricter rules, longer closures and/or a shortened season, it is up to the users of this trail to be responsible and respectful by not riding when the trail is susceptible to cupping, rutting and other damage that increases the rate of erosion and/or creates the need for excessive maintenance.
If further discussion is desired regarding this topic, please start a new thread.

Murphy got about 1/2" of rain this afternoon. The trail will likely be too wet to ride for the rest of Thursday and Thursday evening.
The area also received strong winds and some hail, so be on the lookout for downed trees/branches. If there are any major downed trees, please post up the location (the nearest trail marker).
The trail should be rideable by Friday if we don't get any additional rain.
Here's a reminder about the trail rules at Murphy:
When To Ride, And When Not To...
And as the signs at the trailhead say:
Please allow trail to dry before use.

With the forecasted sun, wind and heat, I'm guessing the trail MIGHT be rideable by late afternoon on Friday (after 4-5pm?).
But the forecast shows the possibility of more rain...
PLEASE be patient if the trail isn't ready.
Given that the trail might not be ready, and the fact that we might get more rain, the odds of making solid plans to ride today aren't very good.
It looks like the trail should be great from Saturday afternoon through Tuesday!!!

Lots of wind down here today, so hopefully it'll help speed the drying process.
I just rode Murphy and the trail is in good condition. It's mostly tacky with a few dry spots and 5-6 small puddles. Only one tree down that covers that track but it can be ridden and may be gone by now - sorry, I don't know the mile marker.
Oops, first time I've had a post deleted...topic enforcement duly noted.
If you didn't get out tonight, you missed it. It's pouring now. Murphy is wet.
Okay, I may have gotten a little excited. It's not really pouring - more like a hard sprinkle - but I'm sure the trail is wet for now. Who knows what tomorrow will bring.

Before tonight's rain, the trail was tacky with a couple puddles and soft spots in problem areas. Otherwise the trail was great!
A BIG thanks to Three Rivers for trimming the large prairies on the south end of the trail, and for removing all the downed trees today (hopefully we didn't get any more this evening)!!
There are a lot of small branches on the trail, and one tree down along the side of the trail near marker 84. Hopefully we'll be able to do some clean up on Sunday during trailwork.
Sorry for the deletion Gary, I should've PMed you. Since people often complain about having to weed through a bunch of posts to find the most current info, and the fact that we provide this as a service for the land manager, the "Trail Conditions in Detail" threads are kept pretty clean.

The trail is dry all around. Getting sandy, my front wheel had a hard time holding its line. Some areas a still pretty over grown. It is nice that they mowed the prairie by the log but there is still some wild parsnip around. It was hot last night so no speed for me, which ment I stayed on my bike!!! I got a pinch flat on my front tire in the lot. Landed an attemp at a jump wrong and almost biffed it but held on. Tire went flat just as I got to the truck.

The seasonal section after the log ride (marker 80 and 81) is open for riding. It's narrow and hasn't been packed in, but it is fun nonetheless.

The trail was in great shape today, boy did we need that rain! The rain did wash the loose sand down into the low corners so be aware of that(may need some strategic deberming).
As far as the down tree goes, it is a biggie! Until 3rpd can get this cleaned up please try and walk over(and under, and under) the tree to get back to the trail. I see some people are all ready riding down the hill and a long way around the tree to get back to the trail. While this may seem faster, it will just cause us problems down the road. We'll try to get the tree taken care of ASAP. If it takes too long, blame Pete C.(shorty).;)

There's a lot of glass part way up the first hill of the advanced loop. I picked about twenty pieces up and chucked them off the trail, but there's still many more pieces laying around. I couldn't decide if someone smashed a small window pane, or if the glass was coming from under the trail surface itself. There's some other foreign material in the trail at this spot, and a few of the glass chunks were partially in the earth, so it's probably something long buried working its way out and nothing malicious. It seems like a lot, however, to have just suddenly emerged from where they've been buried.
Also (and maybe this is just me being paranoid), there's a tree about to go down between markers 70 and 71. I'm not sure if 3 Rivers wants to do preemptive removal, but the gf and I saw it fall against it's neighbor and then about thirty seconds later snap a branch off and drop another ten feet. When it comes the rest of the way down it'll be on the trail, and it definitely had me spooked to ride under its path after seeing it drop partway already. On the second lap it hadn't fallen any further. Maybe it's stable where it rests. After 70 - just after the smaller optional rock feature the trail curves left and then back to the right briefly out of the woods and then back in - maybe 75 feet after reentering the woods - it's leaning towards the trail on your left. A good reason to wear a helmet on a windy day, and to stick a carjack in the camelback.

The glass is just working its way up. There is a lot of it and gets uncovered after many passes on the trail. Hope the tree doesn't effect the trail much but it looks like we will be getting wet today so it might come down if the winds pick up.

It's maybe thirty degrees off vertical, and well above the trail. A rider could possibly make contract with it if they were standing on your shoulders, and you were standing on Ryan's shoulders, who was standing on Bob's shoulders, and Bob was riding a 29er.

It's raining and "they" forecast rain to continue until tomorrow! No Murphy riding today and most likely not tomorrow either!:cryin:
You know the routine:
When To Ride, And When Not To...

I would say no, the trail is most likely too wet to ride. The rain is almost on us again and there has been no sun or wind to dry the trail since the rain stopped yesterday evening.
If we don't get much rain to day, the rest of the week should be perfect! I know that does not help you much today. Sorry

Murphy has received over 1/2" of rain over the last couple days, so it will likely need most of Monday to dry out.
Judging by the forecast, Murphy MIGHT be dry enough to ride by later in the day on Monday (late afternoon/early evening). We'll have to see if we get more rain overnight, and what the weather is like tomorrow.
The rest of this week looks like it should be great!

Murphy received another 1/2" to 3/4" of rain during the late afternoon/early evening today. As of 8:30pm, there is a third line of storms forming to the west, so we'll probably see more rain overnight.
I'd guess that the trail will need most/all of Wednesday to dry out.
It looks like Thursday could be a great day to ride.
Judging by the forecast, we could be getting rain off & on this week... probably a good idea to keep an eye on the weather forecast (and the forums) when making plans to ride.

There is a tree down on the blue trail about halfway between the green/blue and blue/black splits. Despite a warning in the parking lot from the previous rider I still went over the bars when I came across the tree. It's not a bad tree, about 8 inch diameter and on the ground, but it is in a bad place around a blind corner on a fast, smooth slightly downhill section. I put a couple sticks across the trail just prior to the log, so when you run over the sticks, slow down! I'm sure they won't last long as some well-intentioned good samaritan will likely move them. I tried to move the log, but it's a little more than I could handle.
The rest of the trail is in EXCELLENT shape! It's nice and firm, with only a few wet spots in the meadow at the beginning which are avoidable. Everywhere else is dry.

The closest weather station to Murphy reports a quarter-inch of rain since midnight; the cloud cover, humidity and low temps aren't going to do much for drying things out. Latest weather reports say continued rain throughout today and tonight.

Hey Fellow Murphy Lovers, Does anyone know how the trail is fairing today (Wed 10/15)? I was hoping to take a short day and get out there around 4, but I hadn't planned on last night's spoiler rain. I rode at sun-up this morning. 27 degrees. Frost on all open field areas, including entire beginner loop. One frozen puddle, I went right over it. All the rest was dry. One of the most beautiful rides I have taken, had to slow down to look at the long rays of the sun on the lake, morning sun on the marshes and sun beams through the trees. Jumped a family of whitetail deer, had 10 turkeys running in single file in front of me for a few yards until they scattered. Finished with numb fingers (I wore riding gloves) and tingling toes, but filled with appreciation for a group of people that would create such a scenic and fun trail. Thank you MORC! With the leaves departing you can see a long way from some of the hills. Perfect! :D

It takes a lot longer for trails to dry when the temperature is cooler. Also, the trail is packed so hard now that the water doesn't soak in as fast.

The cold nights are creating a fair amount of frost/dew on the trail. If it is cold enough, the trail will be hard and firm in the early mornings. Otherwise, your best bet is to ride later in the afternoon (once the moisture has had a chance to dissipate).

Due to forecasted temperatures above freezing in the coming days, MORC has recommended the closure of the mtn bike trails at Murphy Hanerhan to the Three Rivers Park staff for the forseeable future. Mountain bikes can cause severe damage during the freeze/thaw cycle. We are recommending that the park close the trails until the weather remains below freezing and winter riding can start.
Please refrain from riding trails when the temperature is above freezing to prevent damage to the trails.
Also, keep in mind that once Three Rivers closes the trail to mountain biking, you will be breaking the law if you enter and ride and you could be potentially caught and fined.

I contacted Three Rivers to close the trail last Friday. I am not sure if the message got to the appropriate people. Hopefully it did. If it did, it will be posted closed, if it is still posted as open, please do not ride. Warm days like today will cause the top layer of frost to thaw causing a greasy top layer to form. Riding on a thawed trail causes way more damage than even riding on a trail after rain. Please stay off the trail today! I am meeting with Three Rivers tomorrow morning and I can guarantee that the trail will closed come tomorrow if it isn't already. Thanks in advance!

I just got out of a meeting at Three Rivers and they told me Murphy was closed to mountain biking as of last Friday. The mountain bike trails will remain closed until we finally have temperatures that remain below freezing all day long. At that time, Three Rivers will open up Murphy for winter riding. We will post up when that happens.
Three Rivers Park Patrol will be watching the trail and they have the power to ticket riders who ride the trail when it is closed.

:banghead: We have a 4 day weekend and can't ride a perfectly dry trail because of why?
Because Three Rivers has closed the trail. MORC does not dictate the closing of Murphy Hanerhan, the Three Rivers maintenance staff does.
Lets please keep this in perspective. The old Murphy was open 3 months out of the year. The new one is open 10 months out of the year. I think this is a vast improvement.
The Murphy Hanerhan trail was a large financial investment and continues to cost a lot of money, staff time, and volunteer time to keep in good riding condition. Seasonal closings to prevent damage during freeze/thaw seasons go a long way towards preventing a lot of volunteer time and cash being wasted due to people riding when they shouldn't be. I just had a meeting this past Monday with our Three Rivers representative and they are committed to protecting their investment. They are thrilled with the success of the mountain bike trail at Murphy Hanerhan and they will do what it takes to preserve this asset.
Closings can be a tricky thing. Their staff and MORC volunteers do not have the time to do a daily check of the trail conditions at a trail. Also, the trail conditions can change day to day and hour to hour at this time of year. I know when I was at the trail last Sunday it was in horrible condition and yet people were still riding it. By the way, the trail was closed last weekend, but a mistake was made by Three Rivers staff and the barricade was removed. With the barricade removed, it was left up to people's judgement and you know what, their judgement was horrible. Now the barricade is up and it will be up till the maintenance supervisor over at Murphy Hanerhan pulls it down. He is going to email me as soon as he pulls it down so that I can post up the reopening on this website. Please be patient.
