I have a Yakima rack with a Steelhead tray and possibly am moving up to a fs with disc brakes and possibly it will be a lefty Cannondale.
1) Are fork mount trays a pain with disc brakes?
2) Can you use them with lefty forks?
3) Is there a preferred tray for these scenarios?
I like the lower profile and stability with the fork mount tray but just don't know if it will be the ticket.
Thanks!

Many work just fine with disc brakes now, but I'm not sure if any work with the lefty without a forkup

That, or get an ankle biter / raptor type mount - thats what I'd do with a lefty so I wouldn't have to remove the front wheel all the time.

I just converted my Cutthroat to a Steelhead (by adding the locking skewer only difference between the two models).

I have a Fox F100 fork and Avid Juicey disk brakes. The caliper isn't an issue with this specific tray, the added width of the suspesion fork is a bit bothersome. You have to have the quick release rotated just so as to not hit the fork or load bar.

If you're going Lefty the fork mount rack will not work from what I know you're going to be looking at a leave the wheel on type rack, unless someone has come-up with a lefty mount that I am unaware of.

Might want to be aware of this while shopping for Leftys:

Well, learn something new every day, why didn't I think of that?

Do you get the same safety/stability out on the open road with a raptor or like wheel-on tray?
*I did see the recall on the lefty but it seems that it isn't in the product jsut assembly so should be an easy fix.

I've been using a Thule Big Mouth rack for years. I love the convenience of not having to take my front tire off and finding a place to put it. I agree that they might not be quite as stable, but I've never had a problem with it over the past 5-6 years. Works great. I also had one of those little roof rack issues other people have had. I drove thru a low clearance marker. With my racks, the bikes were knocked off and the bikes and racks recieved some damage, but the same hit on a fork mount rack would have taken out my suspension forks. I had two bikes and two racks and had a total of $80 of damage between the bikes and racks. Not bad. Most people with the same hit on a fork mount rack would have had to replace two suspension forks. I also think the lowering of the profile is more visual than anything. Only disadvantage is that the bug covers don't work with non-fork mount racks. No big deal because it is a mtn bike and it will get dirty anyway! Just my 2 cents!

That's definitely something worth thinking about...I haven't done it yet but I could probably crash at some point.
I heard it was a bit of a pain to remove the wheel all the time with disc brakes and when you throw the lefty in the mix maybe you all are on the right track with a wheel-on model.

My only experience with a roof top bike rack is the Yakima King Cobra which wraps the front wheel to hold it on. I mostly ride around the twin cities and it works great and never having to remove the front wheel makes gettting to the trail a breeze. I've also taken the bike down to Winona down 52 at 75 mph with no issue. I can hear the bike wobble side to side when I pull in/out of the driveway but that is the only time it seems unstable and I really think this is by design. I thought it was cause I had it mounted to factory roof mounts but then got a full Yakima system that is really really sturdy and the bike still wobbles thus leading me to believe it's suppose to give a little.

Bravo on getting the C-dale with a Lefty! Welcome to the minority crowd of non-conformists!

As far as getting that thing on a fork mounted roof rack goor luck, I would call Dave the C-Dale God at Erik's in Bloomington and ask him if there are any adapters you can use for your rack. He would know. I trunk mount mine so I don't have the problem. Anyway, let me know what you come up with.

I know you did. I just read backwards through the thread and noticed there was an adapter already called out. Not laying claim to finding it, just noticing it. Be nice John. Hey, when can I look forward to sharing a beer after a race????;)
