Ok, so I am a newb to mountain biking... I raced BMX and did alot of dirt jumping for years when I was younger.

Im looking into buying a decent hard tail that needs to pull some double duty. I need a bike that can take me around campus and also go do some freeriding in the woods with small drops and some decent jumps.

I was looking into the Giant Yukon last weekend, seemed like a nice bike for the price and had some nice components. I have always been a trek and GT guy, but havent gotten a chance to look at them in person.

My budget is around $500 Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks for your help everyone! :D

I would check around at different shops (with different brands) and do a few test rides to see what fits you and your style. Also, it might not be a bad idea to go to a shop close to where you live/use it most. If campus is the U, you can try Freewheel Bike (west bank, trek products), East bank has an Eric's somewhere, not too far from campus is behind bars (kona and some smaller companies), and many others in the area. Lots of places and tons of options. I'm sure one will suit you well.

Sounds like you may be looking for what might be called an agro or dirt jumping bike. In that price range there's some specialized hardrocks, Haro Escape agro bikes or if anyone has one or if you get a deal on and get a used specialized P-series bike (great bikes but out of the $500 money). Closer to 500 gets you a Fisher mullet. Trek has the Jack series agro bikes. And others mentioned above.
