Go to maps.google.com.

Search for "Medora, North Dakota."

Select "Satellite View."

Zoom in until the image changes to more detail. Google has updated their satellite images!

So far all I know for sure is you can see the MDH trail clearly in the satellite images all the way from Sulley Creek to the Wanagon camp ground. I don't know how much more of the trail you can see. But, if you've ever been or never been it's a great way to get an idea of what this trail looks like. Pretty sweet!

Yeah, you can do the same thing with the Porcupine Rim trail in Moab. It's pretty cool to see how the trails follow the contours of the land.

For even more fun, pull it up in google earth!

Let me know if this link works for anyone:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?f=q&hl=en&layer=&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=115305426928509442699.00000111dbfd55defb0c5&z=9&ll=47.238219,-103.477478&spn=0.803714,2.554321&t=h&om=1

I went through and put a bunch of points along the trail. Don't know if only I can see them or if it's just in my account.

Yup it works here. That's pretty cool.

Hell yeah! This has so many possibilities :)

I'm gonna play around with it some more. You can draw lines and shapes on this map, too. So, I could draw a line along the whole trail!

Coooool. I started actually mapping the trail with the line tool. You can see it up to the entrance to the north unit of TRNP. Google Maps is being flaky, though, and I lost a section of it I drew continuing south from where the trail exits the north unit and goes straight south to the China Wall.

I'll have to see if there's a way to make this editable to more people than myself in case there are things I don't quite have right. I've marked a couple of spots with question marks because I'm not sure if I've pointed to it exactly right. Same goes for my blue line of the trail.

Gotta email this map to Loren and Jennifer of DC, that's for sure!

I zoomed way in and was trying to follow the trail. But without the posts with the Turtle mark on them, I kept losing the trail. Hmmmm?...kind of reminds me of my actual experience there.....:)

Check the map again, Shad. I've lined out the trail from the CCC to County Road 50 (about mile 70, I think?).

Someone really needs to take a garmin 205 or 305 with them, set it to the longest possible recording, and take along an external USB Battery for it and get a good map and elevation plot of the trail.

Sweet.

You can save the file from Google Maps and load it up in Google Earth. Then, you can post changes made in Google Earth to the community. Here's the latest:

Click the "KML" icon to downoad the Google Earth file. Then you can make changes and additions on your own.

Consider my mind officially blown.

You can "tour" any trail you make in Google Earth. I just toured a good section of the Maah Daah Hey trail in cyberspace. Terrain height map included. You could just set up a trainer in front of your computer, hit the "tour" command and pretend you're riding the damn thing.

As Neo said "woah"

FYI for those out there.

If you are running a AMD Dual Core Processor, make sure on download the optomizer from AMD.

If you don't you will most likely have problems with Google Earth.

I just solved the problem after 4 months of fighting it.

Sigh.

Nice setup Chris.

Glad you like it, James. :)

I've attached the just completed total mapping of the Maah Daah Hey Trail. Load the file up in Google Earth, start a tour with the very last "Maah Daah Hey" path file, sit back and go "ooh."

Here's the Google Maps link, too:
