So what are you guys running?Ive got 32/16 on now and have yet to try it on the trails (obviously) just the road.Im thinking my usual trails like Leb, Salem, Terrace Oaks, 2to1 will work just fine, but what about Memorial, Afton and other trails with some good climbing?

I run 34:20 (or 32:20 if I want to for sure have a good chance to maybe clear Stairway and the climb from the quarry) at Memorial (on my rigid 29er). It's a good gear for 95% of the trails up there. A little of the doubletrack you'll be spun out if you're flying and a couple climbs you'll be puking up a lung.

Can't wait to see you trying to conquer stairway with the new monster.

I started with a 32:16 on my 29er but quickly switched to a 20 tooth. Makes climbing the hills a lot less of a grunt fest and helps you keep momentum through the rocks.

I've only run a 34:20, and it's worked well overall, but I am contemplating a move down to a 19 out back for the heck of it. Seeing as how I'm churning out ~13 watts/kg/hour on average this spring, dropping a tooth won't kill me. ;)

I'm usually more of a spinner than a grinder, and Leb is about the steepest trail that I ride on the single.

Winter = 32/23
Summer = 34/22 or 34/20
Spring (road/urban) = 34/18
Road = 34/16

This is all with fat tires.

If you have ridden on a 26" ss the 2:1 is a little harder on a 29er. If found Leb is a little spun out with 32/18 but if your keeping it casual it's perfect. If in Red Wing get a hold of Isaac or myself and we can get a few local ss to come out and play.

i'm generally a masher not a spinner. what works for me:

Afton 24hr course: 32/20 ( suffered. a lot. no shame in walking :) )
Leb: 32/18 somtimes 32/16
Most other places in the TC: 32/16
Winona/Holzinger: 32/18 although i think 32/16 would be OK, too.

Funny thing is, when I had a 26" SS I was too chicken to run 32/16.

Good luck.

32:18 on a 29" is roughly equal to a 32:16 on a 26". Or if you have a 32t chainring, than add two more teeth on the rear than what you would run on a 26" to be roughly equal.

I run 32:20 on most trails. If there's a lot of steep and/or long climbs I'll run 32:22.

32:18 or 17 for most road rides (fat tires). But that's just me...

Prefer 36x23t for max chain wrap - >1.7:1 on a 26" basis.

I prefer to spin and the lower gearing gives me better acceleration in the twisties...don't really care if I spin out on the flats...lets you soak up the scenery.

Good point, flats are for cruising.36x23 is different, ,I'll keep that in mind.
