The spring cleaning for Hillside will be on Saturday April 14 at 9am. Meet in the front parking lot. If you come late and the gate is open drive back to the compost pile, listen for people to figure out where we're at on the trail.

Good things to bring are:
Boots
Pants
Gloves
Eye-wear
Shovel
Dirt-Rake
Other Hand ToolsWe'll have other motorized tools for other things. Depending on how many people we get, we could be done before noon. The latest it's gone has been 3pm. You can ditch anytime you have to but the more help the better!

The spring Trail Benefit Race will be at Hillside so we need to get things in shape! More details to come.

P.S. Please let me know if you plan on attending. We'd like to get a count. Thanks

Trailwork is still on! There is some work to be done in Section 3. Mainly fixing downhills/rerouts. The very last down hill is one to be looked at. Also be installing distance markers.

Happy(er) trails after today! I think I had heard one "small" log laughing but we showed um!

That little log pictured above was in the way of the reroute so it had to go. I did try the new reroute before leaving and it is alot nicer than the old trail and will become fast and fun in no time, 5 switches down to the bottom will be woohoooo. Nice pay off after climbing. some areas are nice and dry but we did encounter ice just a few inches under the surface and there are still plenty of very muddy areas still on the trail. Hopefully this week will be dry and warm up there. The areas sun protected, north sides of hills, and with heavy leaf cover may not be dry even by next weekend. Leaf cover is an temperature insulator and wind block- this was extremly evident today.

Yeah, I'd say we cleared some serious lumber out today. I think I actually heard that 18" diameter oak tree laugh a little bit when Kevin picked up the axe and started whackin' away. If I remember correctly, it only took the 6 of us trading off for about 25 minutes to get through that sucker. All the wood cutting was done completely without burning any hydrocarbons. Just good old fashioned elbow grease.

BIG THANKS goes out to all the peeps that made it out there today. I think we had somewhere around 8 or 9 guys total.

When we were working the soil out there, only the top 1-2 inches were dry/thawed. Under that was another 3 inches of solid frozen ice-dirt. Over the next couple days that 3" of frozen dirt will thaw and some of that moisture will rise to the surface, making the trails a little more wet than they are now. It would be a good idea to give it another several days of warmer weather to be sure that all of the moisture has dried. We saw many different areas that were dry, get very muddy in a matter of hours. That process will continue through the week.

We will keep an eye on it (I drive by there every day on my way home from work) and let you know when we've got the trailwork done and it's dried up for the opening abuse that we all want to give it!!!:crazy2:
