Why don't you hand it off to The Route? I know you and Adam don't really see eye to eye but I would think he would be interested since he owns the only bike shop in town.

[quote=Wolfchimp;206896]Why don't you hand it off
There in lies part of the problem. Everybody that is interested in it thinks I should just give it away. I've worked very hard for this event and I have alot of time, money and equipment invested.
However there are several other issues that are factoring into this descission. This hasn't been an overnite thing. I've been debating this since last years event. Hopefully something can work out somewhere but as of this point nothing solid yet. I'll keep everyone posted.

I don't mean GIVE it to them. You would ask for compensation for the equipment and if they don't want it, you sell it. I am just saying you should hand off the responsibility to them. I know that you look at this race as your baby so you can't just let it die. There are many people that love that race...including me. I wish you luck.

Yeah... If I were a betting man I'd say that the Muddy River Rock and Roll will live on past this year. I'm not exactly certain what Gus is getting at about not "giving" the race away, but if he's not planning on having a race in 2008, my guess is that there is some way for another person/entity to step up if they want to.
I'd initially guess that Adam and the Route would be interested, but I know that they are big drivers behind some new trail being built in River Falls that I know Adam is hoping will be part of the WORS series (or some race series) eventually. He already puts on the Afton MNSCS race and some races out at the Badlands in Hudson, so maybe he'd be spread too thin?
Don't despair though. There's time, and we're starting to try and get more organized down here so odds are good we'll work something out.
Gus... get on that Poprad and quit scaring everyone.:p

just throwing another idea out there, the UofMN holds its home MTB bike race at redwing and also has a non collegiate race as a fundraiser so maybe if gus doesnt want to hold muddy river in early summer it could line up with the collegiate race and become a mega event. gus you should talk to maria stewart and andy rosch about this.

On the OT subject... if you're talking to Gus... carry on... I'll be around sometime Saturday and will probably be within a few miles of your place either Sat or Sunday as we ride to try and work out any pre-TI kinks. Don't know if I can add anything to any plans...
On topic a bit... Thanks to Gus for what he's done in RW. Many other people have had a hand in the trails, but Gus has been there from the beginning (or at least from the beginning of the official trails from what I've heard). I give him a hard time but that's mainly because of how poorly he climbs and how often he answers his cell phone while on a ride.

I personally think memorial rivals any trail in the state, but I think the most important thing Gus has built in RW is a tremendous relationship with the folks at the city, from my understanding he basically just explains what his intententions are and they seem to pretty much give him free reign. Hopefully our group can get a little of that, as Gus eases into trailboss retirement. (not to rush you gus)

Soon I'll post the new payout schedule for the Satuerday DH. Bigger is better. The more riders the higher the payout. Shooting for 60+ riders this year. Last year I had 16 and the U of M race had right around 50 so I think that is realistic goal.

Thanks for the pros Dave! It would be sad to see the MRR go away I have to admit. Hard to believe that all started 10 years ago with a few of us from the old Great River Racing club picking up trash in the park! I hope Gus can get some of the locals to step up and help to keep the race going.

Hey Isaac! Glad to hear that racing will continue in some form on the best trails in the Midwest!
The 12 hour down here was unbelievable. I didn't race it this year but will be next year for sure! I got roped into course marshalling which was fine since my fitness is way off what I would have needed to compete. Tinker Juarez and Nat Ross put on quite a show. They each pulled off 12 laps in 12 hours; the laps were 10 miles each with 1500 ft of climb per lap! Neither stopped for more than 30 seconds the entire day!
The race director really created a festival atmosphere that reminded me of racing in the "good ole days" when everyone would just hang out for the day. Live music, good food, and freely flowing beer kept everyone in a great mood and the weather couldn't have been better. It was great for a 1st year event. The $15,000 in prize money/door prizes didn't hurt either!
They gave away Haro SS bikes, an Ellsworth frame, a Lynsky frame, multiple SRAM component groups, Hoss clothing, Tifosi eyewear, and on and on. It was unreal!
You need to get down here next year for it. It was fantastic!

But on a positive note. Did you see the mad cha-ching payout schedule for the DH race. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!. Bring you, your buddy, and there buddy.
D H race payout schedule.
20 riders & up =50% 3 deep 7%, 18%, 25%
60 riders & up =65% 3 deep 12%, 23%, 30%
100 riders & up =75% 3 deep 15%, 25%, 35%
200 riders & up =90% 3 deep 20%, 30%, 40%
At 59 riders, 1st place would take home $295. That is HUGE for a local level event!

I believe it's the same except the section north of the large, eastern most meadow. Normally that section is run in the standard direction, but this year, the course will go out into the meadow to almost the end of the section. Then it will run that section backwards all the way to the start. Then it will follow the double track around the outside (north side) of it. This is similar to how it was run 3 years ago.
The other change is sport riders now have to stop at the end of each lap and drink a beer (or 3 Red Bulls, if you aren't a beer drinker)

The actual start/finish line isn't all that interesting, but not too far from it is some decent viewing. The "spin cycle" section (the first bit of singletrack where you go up and down a little gully a few times) is always pretty interesting. Lots of carnage last year.

Just a little farther from spincycle section is a pretty good jump.
Some signage directing spectators to the interesting sections may be helpful. It's a whole different perspective trying to direct someone walking to a section even after having ridden it. Just a suggestion to make the races more spectator friendly.

If you get a chance to come to Red Wing this weekend and ride the course before next weeks race, you will notice some of the banner and markings are already up. This should help direct you a few places where things may be confusing.
Please keep in mind that the park will likely be busy this weekend with non-bikers as it's a favorite spot in Red Wing for hikers and dog-walkers, especially the double track sections.
The track is quite dry and dusty. We didn't get any rain on Wednesday when everyone else got dumped on. Looking at the long term forecast, next weekend looks hot and dry with no rain between now and then. There will be a few spots on the trail where it's loose from being so dry, but for the most part the trails are fast and in great shape.

Perhaps if you're familar with the trail it would be easy to follow. I printed up the basic map from the trail guide, along with the written description from the trail guide and took it with me today. My intent was to get a feel for what the trail is like in general rather than to follow the actual course since I've never ridden at Memorial before. I accomplished that goal, but there was quite a few sections of trail I could not figure out how to get to based on the trail guide. If my intent had been to follow the race course I may as well have ridden with my eyes closed. Not obvious to someone unfamiliar with the trail to begin with.

That's a MUCH better map than the pdf from the trail guide. Was that previously available somewhere??
Wow, wish I would have had the new map this morning. The barriers helped for some spots but other areas were anybody's guess. You have to really be looking for the entrance into the backwards section of singletrack, or you just keep riding to the spot where that loop eventually dumps out (that is, if I got that part right).
We skip the Log Drop (?) and pick up the techinical section that becomes the Upper DH section, yes? After the upper dh section, do we take a hard right at 5 Way or do we go straight then loop around, taking a left up Crosstown?
Then, coming up out of the Quarry after going up the little climb after the bridge, do we take Lay Down Sally (the upper line) or 2112?
I pretty much rode every combination, just wondering what the correct way is. Lots of other equally confused riders out there today, but it was a good day for some extra miles.:eyeroll:

Yeah, I got the $15.18 proccessing fee also. I emailed their customer support team and they sent me this reply:
"Thank you for contacting Active.com.
The processing fee for this event is $1.08, not $15.18. If you are getting a different amount, please feel free to contact our customer support team."
I don't think they heard me the first time... when I got a different amount... and contacted their customer support team. Oh well. They must outsource their support to India like everyone else. My guess is, that only the Comp class online registration is messed up. All the others seem to be working properly. Has anyone registered for the Comp class and been charged the correct amount for proccessing fee?
I'm going to go through with the online registration and see if the amount changes at the very end of the transaction. If it doesn't, I'll call their 'customer support team' in the morning and get it straightened out.:hit:

I have no idea either! All I know is every time I register for one of the events my processing fee is different. I do know that the more people and more events I register for at the same time the processing fee becomes less per person, so they must have some type of pro-rated system.

I concur, I really enjoyed the citizen course. The climbing was all within my ability and yet the whole course still whopped my arse. Very nice.
I have never raced, and this was the first time riding down there so I didn't know one thing and even at the end I didn't know where I was supposed to finished until I saw the gate and people waving at me.
From a newbie perspective I was very much impressed at the volunteers who lined the trails shouting encouragement and clapping. Its amazing what that does for you when your legs are on fire and you can't breath.
There were plenty of patrol riders checking things out and the water people at the end of each lap I could have thrown gold coins at!
Registration by printing on line, times and directions plus more info made that part easy and the day of the race even though I was nervous, there was no pressure from anyone at the tents. It really was that organized.
Especially at the end of the race, a tub full of bottled water and one handed to you plus a banana! Yep, a banana! It was really a lot of fun!

I would like to thank all those involved for a perfect day of racing. The course was great!!
Everything seemed to go smoothly and even though I declined the water on both laps thanks to those people who volunteered their time and all the other volunteers spread out offering encouragement.
I'll second the fun atmosphere of the MNSCS events! It seems like I always have other commitments that keep me from being able to enjoy the whole day out there and cheer on the other classes. But hopefully that will change in the future!!

Also, BIG thanks to the organizers, workers, and sponsors! Water handed to you, splashed on you, and even shot at you! What more could a sweaty out-of-breath guy ask for?
