Anyone up for giving rock climbing a shot Wed evening?

I have been attempting to get back into the sport, but due to lack of... OK just to many excuses.

Regardless Midwest Mountaineering has a bouldeing cave and climbing is FREE. Fugure a few goes there to get warmed up for a few weeks then hit the great outdoors. Redwing has a decent wall plus a few other little craigs around the cities.

As an added bonus it is great training for adventure racing. Bet the girls will do better than the guys initially  at least until you figure out it is not just a series of pullups.

Climbing is only free if you have shoes...otherwise it is $2 or $3. What a great sport!

My friends and I free-climb all summer in Red Wing and up on areas along the St. Croix. No ropes (unless they're the white ones ); just wedging fingers and toes in between fissures. We repel down, which is where the adrenaline rush comes from. Ok, so we do use ropes, but it's only to get down. We'll be starting up again in May or June. I'll PM you two if you want to join us. We haven't lost a person yet. We climb the real things though, not REI walls.

This wednesday wouldn't work for me but I would be interested if you think it would be a weekly thing.
I have the gear but haven't climbed for quite awhile.

Crux,
I would be up for this.
Devin

Marie,
On the "free climbing" bit, I think you mean free-solo, as free-climbing is the art of climbing using the features provided by mother nature only, but while still using the rope and other gear for protection in the event of a fall. Free-soloing is using the features, but using no ropes. There is a large difference with the biggest being when one falls.

I climb at Taylor's Falls and down in Red Wing during the summer. Every once in a while I make it up to the North Shore to hit up Shovel Point and Palisade.

I'm game but it won't work for me this wednesday.

If anyone would like to hit VE sometime, I've got a couple of 1/2 price passes.

I didn't get on real rock at all last summer and would really like to get back out this summer. I've got all my own gear plus some extra.

I'd climb ropes with you this afteroon, but, the Verm is going to peak at 400 cfs. In other words, it's blowing doors.

Devin: I do both. :) I've fallen at both. :embarass: But I still do both. :)

I climb Taylor's Falls Red Wing North Shore Shovel Point and Palisade.
Pork chop! Yep all of it. Been there, not many lines I've missed around here. Back in the day Amy and I would bluff camp on Palisade 10 weekends a year(can't do that anymore).

I find it hard to get motivated locally and can only bear the gym a few times a year. We need to get Magic(transition from ice to rock) and Tower out there among others. I want to get Duncan on that huge arm/leg bar crack at palisade. Yeah, that will get me going....let's go.

Great timing on post, I think we're all ready for summer activities. Post times and you may get more to show up than you realize. Someone will drag you out to real rock again this summer!!

Plan on climbing at 7pm this Wednesday from 7-8:45ish at
Midwest Mouainteering
309 Cedar Ave. So
Minneapolis, MN 55454

Climbing cave is free to climb, shoes are $3 if you need to rent. We can do VE some other night think that for people just starting out or getting back into it Midwest is a good place to get the feel for it and price is right.

For summer I have a full rack and along with a few ropes, extra harness for a few people. could support two groups of top rope or lead.

I also have several ropes, a large rack and no I do not mean that one:D, and few harnesses. I am also teaching both my boys who will be 7 and 5 this summer to climb if there are any other parents looking to do this.

Do we have any times for tonight? Or is anyone planning on going another night? I'm game for most weeknights, both at Midwest and VE. I've also pieced together a pretty o.k. route in my basement! 4 moves, under the stairway, but much fun!

People. I just called Midwest and learned they have a climbing 101 clinic at 6:30pm tonight. Two people are signed up for this free clinic, it is expected to last about hour. The instructor may let people climb but then again....with more in clinic or a slew of walk in cave'rs....open climbing may be off-limits until after the clinic!

So perhaps get there at 7:00pm, fill out all the paperwork and hope for the best timing??? Once clinic is complete open climbing is til close....9pm.

With this...my kids and I are tentative tonight.

Too everyone who has posted up here: I didn't even know about these plans until Wednesday night because I have not been online for a bit. :cryin:

That being said, I would love to get together with people and climb. I just started climbing last fall, then hurt my shoulder so haven't been in about three months. However, my shoulder is ready to hit it again and I would love to meet other people who are into this sport. I can't wait to hit some real rock (I've never been), but want to hopefully get into the gym a few times before to get back into shape again. So I'd be up for any other climbing nights people plan...

When there is group going to VE and someone wants to try it out, I too have a few 1/2 coupons if cost is a factor-you gotta at least try it!

Hello Nicole,

Welcome to MORC and the forums! There will be plenty of opportunities to meet up with other bikers and climbers. Keep your eye on the Group Rides section and the Other Sports section. People are always planning something. And if you're interested, trail work sessions are usually a good time as well. Those will get rolling once things dry out a bit.

Hey everyone,
I'm new to MORC and I'm pretty excited to get out and ride. I recently moved down to Rochester and away from my climbing/biking partners and would like to meet some new people to climb and bike with. Red wing is pretty attractive since you can climb and bike so close together.
Anyone want to get together once the weather gets a little nicer?

If people are climbing this spring/ summer, I'd definately be game. I used to climb alot a few years ago, but gave it up. The next time there is a ride, race or trailbuilding down in Redwing we should try to coordinate a group climb at Barn Bluff.

Sounds good to me! At this rate it doesnt look like we'll be able to climb, or bike until late april. Are there any days that work best for people?

I'm going down there later to see the dry run and bring a disc over from ice climbing last year for sound effects. Carolyn is down there now going over technical climbing stuff.

I'll definately be going to see it after it opens. I don't know if I'm going to go opening night though. You are welcome to join us when we go see it.

I (and friends) have a group going every saturday night to VE during April. Get there around 7:30pm, climb till close (10pm). Fun way to spend a saturday night. More people/new people always welcome to join.

You can find me easily, as I'm probably the only guy with a brilliantly purple harness.

Since quite a few people have expressed interest in some outdoor rock climbing, keep an eye on this thread.
As the weather gets warmer and the trails and rock dry out we can try to arrange some times to climb and bike in Red Wing.
Have a good one.

Hey Dan! - do ever go to midwest to climb?

I don't usually go to midwest (although I know it's a cheaper route than VE!) b/c I enjoy doing the top-rope climbs at VE more I guess, and having a lot more route choice. Plus, VE is not very busy at all on saturday nights, which is a fun way/time to be there. Not averse to Midwest's cave though, should meet you there sometime!

Also b/c a lot of newer climbers come meet us on Saturday nights at VE, it's a lot easier for beginner/first-time climbers to hit the auto-belays at VE and have a good time.

Jessica,
I'm not that skilled yet either, so you won't be the only newb around! :D I just started climbing last fall indoors-and haven't been for a couple months due to a shoulder injury. Do you/have you climbed at the indoor gym at all? If you would like to get 'warmed up' before people start going outdoors give me a holler, I want to get into VE some before then myself!

Dan,
I would love to join the group! Saturday night is an awesome night to go! Pretty much free pick of routes. At least last fall it was...

Unfortunately I have been busy every Saturday in April so far. :cryin: I am planning on going to WI for the DH race next weekend (21st), but if you guys are going the 28th, I will plan on showing up. I haven't climbed since last fall and have been wanting to find people to get to the gym with. Climbing again, and meeting new people who climb/bike will be great! :jumpy:
