I've got an old Schwinn Rocket 88 that needs a new fork. The current fork has 80mm of travel and the head angle is 70.8
I'm wondering how big of a fork (TRAVEL) I can put on this thing w/o it being an issue? Anyone have a clue?

Probably 80 mm. The key is to keep the A/C (axle to crown) the same or close to your current fork.

Try to measure the axle to crown distance. If, for example, your bike is equipped with a Rock Shox fork - notoriously for long A-Cs in any given travel range - you may be able to run another mfr's 100mm fork like a White Brothers.

In general though, each jump in fork travel - 80-100-125 - will slacken your HA about 1* and lift your BB about .25".

You really shouldn't move more than once increment away from what it was designed for. Beyond changes in geometry many XC bikes aren't built to handle the greater leverage a long-travel fork imparts on the HT area.
