I am thinking of picking up a used kona 2-9 SS, does anyone have any experience with this bike? I know kona has a great reputation among Freeriders, but I haven't heard too much about their XC rigs.
Hit up MTBR, lots of hits over there.
I seem to recall reading about a older batch of frames that got the wrong downtube from what was spec'd during production. Ended up causing lots of failures. I could be completely mistaken on that though.

most of the reviews are favorable, hopefully it stays within my price range and I can find out without dropping too much cash
Here's the MTBR thread I was refering to:

Favorable or not, you might want to avoid the 06's. I have no opinion or experience to offer, just passing along information.

does a replacement warrenty of this kind transfer with ownership? I guess I wouldn't have much of a problem as long as they are willing to replace the frame if it cracks.

kona only has a four year non-transferable warrenty, that blows, I now kind of hope I lose this auction, it would be a nice bike for the money assuming that the frame doesn't randomly crack. I guess if I get stuck with I could maybe still try to work kona over for a replacement frame being that this is a reaccuring problem. I suppose I will find out in 12 hours if I need to worry about it.

I have 3 Kona's and love them. I bit of advice about the frame cracking, if you race, don't tell them. My chainstay snapped on my '03 Kikapu and I had my bike shop call to get a replacement chainstay sent to me before the race and it cost me $150. They gave me $50 back when they received the broken chainstay. I guess there is no warranty if you race the bike:mad: . I guess $100 is better than shelling out money for a whole new frame.:etard:

Ahhhh... you don't ride hard enough to break it anyways Ben... :p
Even if the run of frames has had issues, I'm guessing that 100% of the bikes (or even close to it) exhibit any problems. If it's still a sweet deal, then I wouldn't be too worried.
Is the auction a complete bike? Or just frame? I've got some parts you could "borrow" to build it up (White Brothers fork and wheels chiefly). Good luck (or bad luck depending where you stand on if you want the bike now or not).

it is a complete '06 with a karate monkey fork, hayes hydrolic discs and some other pretty solid components, I have the high bid right now at 500+45 to ship. I am kind of on the fence as to whether or not I am going to keep going up if someone pushes me near the end, even if I would end up getting and does crack I would still end up with some nice components to throw on another frame (which can usually be picked up fairly reasonably) I will let everyone know how it turns out. Damn Isaac and erik with your pressure to join the singlespeed cult.

someone bid me up to at least 525, I couldn't feel good about going any higher than that with my farm payment coming up at the end of the month. I think I will probably end up working out some sort of financing on a rig or a felt, Or maybe win the lottery so I can get some goofy looks on the trail while riding this thing-

I just rode Mike's bike today and I gotta say goddam!!! :jumpy: I have to get a 29er. I have 3 Kona's already and would easily buy another but this time I will probably go through Eric and make me one of those sweet steel rides. :etard:
