View Full Version : A question requiring opinions....:-)

Okay, so it's not that serious.....so don't worry.

We have the Non-Biking Discussion area which was created (I might have had something to do with it) because of the the politics and non-bike related heated debates going on in the forums. The problem is that it's a sign up only thing and I see many things that could be in a more public place in the forums. Examples are Kayaking, Advanture racing, XC Skiing and some other subjects that fit in with most of our active lifestyles.

So I am wondering if a "other sports" section is needed that everyone sees. Mostly because I think many people might never see some of the cool activities that are posted up in the Non-Biking Discussion area.

Okay, this is where your opinions come into play......opinions?

Why not,

We have a road riding area, with the theory that there is a positive correlation between Mt. Bikers and road riding. I think the same goes for skiing, snowshoeing, kayaking etc.

Next question is if you feel theres too many designations should we replace the road thread with a broader other sports thread

I don't think an "other sports" category would hurt, but I'd hate to have to create separate categories for all the wonderful other sports.

If people were to follow the thread designations unwritten rule:

Topic: Details (e.g. Snowboarding: a good X to buy)

it wouldn't be so bad to sort through it, but having it public means all those people that come here for mtb talk and mtb only are forced to see it whether they like it or not (e.g. when clicking on new posts)

Having an area a person has to join does keep it rather hidden if we don't keep pinging people about it... and forcing them to read the political stuff among all the other GOOD stuff can be a lot to ask ;)

Doesn't matter to me. Because I browse the site so frequently I only use the "new posts" button to locate new posts and don't even really pay attention as to what section they are in.

Yes, this would be a very good idea. If/when this is done it would probably be a good idea to rename the "Non-Biking" forum to something else as well, since some of the topics unrelated to biking would actually belong elsewhere (in the new Other Sports topic, for instance).

I only use the New post button as well. Other sports may be helpful for people who are not signed up for the non-bike debating fun.

And it would stop wasting valuebale non-biking forum room which could be used for useful topics like beer, and wonderful internet games

It's not a matter of getting the "other sports" out of the non-biking discussion. What we need is a separate section for politics, which constitutes well over half of the non-biking traffic. The political pissing contests are the reason that many people don't want to subscribe to the non-biking area.

If you remember, I suggested this about six months ago, but the suggestion was vetoed. However, ironically, the suggestion was posted only in the non-biking area, where it was never seen by the people that might have liked the idea.

I respectfully disagree.

I'm pretty sure there are people out there who would enjoy an "other sports" forum who don't care about the latest cars, what beer is the hoppiest, or some of the other fascinating non-political drivel that's posted ;)

Can we just start a "Politics: Conservative Right Wing BS" thread?

I didn't state my opinion.....how rare!...:)

I like the idea of an "Other Sports" thread. I don't think road biking should go there since it is cycling and there is enough people who cross over to make it worthy of it's own forum.

But all the other stuff, politics, beer, web games, and so on.....seem to fit well in the Non-Biking area and gives people the option to see that stuff if they only want to see it. The prefix thing works quite well there too.

"Other Sports" on the other hand, has enough cross over that I can see having a forum for it.

There would be nothing to post... so no, no empty threads allowed on our forums. ;)

Actually I think the majority voted to separate the political stuff but we never actually did it... I suspect it might be a slightly different result now - I think it gets a bit crazy, but there are fewer trolls spewing nonsense now. (Just Chris is about it... kidding Chris)

We can do whatever people want and can even try it out and modify it later if necessary. Lets just be careful not to turn off any potential new members or mountain bikers if we go too far into the "other" stuff in a way that people can't turn off.

I guess how much you would split it up would also depend on the amount of traffic this forum is getting. Splitting Non-Biking into too many categories would probably end up with a couple of dead categories if there isn't enough traffic to support it. I'm guessing it may be able to handle a three way split (Politics, Other Sports, and Everything Else) but who knows...

I'm also guessing that traffic right now is kind of high (it seems like there are a lot of wide ranging discussions right now), with everyone itching for the upcoming spring and dreaming about rideable singletrack. Once it warms up I'd assume traffic will drop somewhat. I enjoy the MORC forums quite a bit and I'm a computer geek, but I still prefer hitting the dirt and running into trees and rocks and stuff :)

Actually we're in our deadest months as far as activity here. June-August are the heaviest months.

Its probably the biggest time of the year for non-biking chatter tho... typical off-season stuff.

Bob hit the nail on the head (I'm one of these people).

Another vote for an "Other Sports" forum here. Non-subscription too.

I think it's a good idea if for no other reason than to encourage posting about other sports, it would be great to hear about other outdoor interests.

The filtering part is irrelevant to me since I also use New Posts and am pretty good at ignoring the stuff that I don't care about.

Try whiskey and methamphetamine. There is no D-key fast enough. Starcraft, however, takes on world-changing ramifications.

That and the fact that some of us never knew there was a non-biking area that requires a subscription. Seriously, I had no idea and still don't see where it is after a few quick searches through the site...

Yeah, it's not easy to find. It's kind of hidden.

When you're logged in, go here:

There is the Non-Biking group and some others, most of which typically do not apply.

I forget... is the non-biking section even available to non-MORC members?

I'd prefer the "Other Sports" section to be part of the regular forums just on the simple fact that I'd like to unsubscribe from the political mumbo-jumbo.

Really, bigwheel's idea for a separate 'Politics' thread would be best!

I agree with Bob that we should have a separate Political area and also think we should have a seperate one for other sports. I believe a lot of us do other sports in the winter and summer. Keep the non-biking area for the weird stuff and beer stuff and food stuff and video game stuff. I of course am one of the people that just clicks on the new posts and goes from there so it wouldn't matter much to me.:etard:

Off-topic: It is nice having areas that you need to subscribe to, even if it is as simple as checking a box on personal options. This is a good way to keep the google/yahoo search engines out of the parts of our forums where people sometimes get a little testy.

I think the MORC forums should stay consistent with the club name and revolve around off-road cycling. Keep the other forums as "hidden" options, just make sure it's easy for people to switch them on and off.
The forums aren't just our little playground, keep in mind that prospective members may see what's going on and wonder why there is focus on other sports. "Where IS my money going" they say....
