i am thinking about throwing drop bars on my commuter. i want to be running 1x9, i have an xt-9speed cassette, and an xt rear derailleur currently.
i was wondering if i could use a 105 shifter/lever with my MTB drivetrain. It seems to me that as long as the rear derailleur has the high-low set properly, that the 9 clicks coming out of my derailleur shouldnt matter road vs. mtb shifters.....
anyone care to comment?
thanks

Shimano 9 speed components are interchangable. Your 9spd road shifters should work just fine with an XT rear der.

This is the case here, but it is not always the case. The way the derailleur is designed matters too. Some have a faster pull, meaning less cable movement needed to move it one click, than others. So yeah, components do have to be compatible....not just shifters with rear cassettes.....which is what I once thought.

What kind of brakes are you running?
You'll need to use Avid Road Discs, a Problem Solvers Travel Agent w/ V-brakes, or cantilevers if you want to use standard road lever/shifters.
Another option is the Dia-Compe 287V lever... it is V-brake compatible (but you'll have to figure out your shifter set-up).

It'll work. About half of the cross racers use MTB derailleurs in the back, because they can carry a wider range cassette. I have an XT with Ultegra shifters. Just get cantilever brakes; they work fine with road levers. And get in line top brake levers if you are going off road. It lets you get farther back for descending and gives you another option for comfort.

iirc-
Road hub rear spacing = 130 mm
Monocog rear hub spacing = 135 mm
of course there were those who used a bar to spread the old 110 mm rear monocogs out to 135 mm....
i am not an expert but if people successfully spread the rear triangle 15 mm, it seems likely you could unspread it by 5 mm
