I called New Moon Bike And Ski today just on a whim to check trail conditions and lo and behold some of the most amazing world class trails are not only still open but they are in (her words not mine) in
pristine condition. Apparently Mother Nature hates Cable,WI less than she hates Minneapolis!

So it got me thinking that Saturday would be a great day to go and ride in heaven!!!

I'm not sure but this sounds better than Rails To Trails around here. So I dropped the line in the water to fish and see who I catch.

Let me know if there is interest and we'll plan this thing out.

By the way if you've never ridden The Rock Lake Trail it is amazing!!!

I may be game. What time were you thinking Dan?

DanB

Leaving town here at about 8:00 is usually how I've done this as a day trip, but I'm up for suggestions. There are two rides up there that I am interested in. Rock Lake Trail with some other trails thrown in the mix, or the new stuff by the hatchery which I haven't ridden yet. I believe the new stuff by the hatchery in Hayward doesn't have the length you can pull out of Rock Lake, so I would probably be leaning that way, also the fact that Rock Lake Trail has the Hildebrand area which is just plain amazing singletrack!!! Well and really all of Rock Lake is spectacular!!!:)

I can fit three in my car in a pinch (one bike in the trunk), and I love to drive. :D

I don't think the weather will be an issue, looking at the current and the forecast it looks like they are getting a dusting of snow. When I talked to New Moon they said something pretty radical would have to happen to make things bad up there. She said that right now it is like fall riding, they haven't had any precipitation for quite some time and the trails are hard and fast, even some snow wouldn't wreck anything she said.

Sorry JJ! I forget about Saturdays and that ball and chain called work! :scream: Next time though eh?

I may be game. What time were you thinking Dan?

I'm interested in riding, but I've really got to do a few other things and well, tonight and tomorrow are the only times I can do them.

Also checking weather looks like 50% chance of snow/rain today up until 3 or 4.. then it goes down to 30% for a bit.

I'll keep an eye on the weather and let you all know in the morning...

The earlier the better for me. I was hoping to return to the Twin Cities by four or five. Are you taking your single speed Dan? I could also drive and take a couple of people comfortably. Keep us updated Dan!!

I would think if we take off at 8:00, we would get back around 6:00 or 6:30. I would be fine with 7:30 too.

Greg I've got room and your welcome to it. If it is just the three of us we can do one vehicle.

I just got done with a 35 mile road ride in the this awesome weather I am more than ready for dry singletrack!!! I'm a lock for this ride, and yep I'll be singlespeeding it.

12-29-2006, 04:47 PM
I talked to New Moon at about three and the guy there said they did a group ride last night and it was awesome. Dry and hard. They got about an inch of snow this morning but it hasn't melted and it won't affect anything he said other than making it even prettier up there than it already is!

Tomorrow's weather forecast is 27 to 33 for temp and partly cloudy! Perfect!!!

It would be just plain foolish to miss this...................

Isn't there a Menards or Home Depot right off of 35E and County Road E? Maybe that would work? I haven't talked to Katie yet so let's just take the initiative to figure it out.

It was a great ride up in Cable.. Even with the 2 - 2.5" of snow they got over night.. Weather was great up there and got one of those views you get thru the woods just after a snow fall.

Thanks to everyone on the ride who waited a few for me - I was not planning on going, then about 7:30 changed my mind and had to get my stuff together to go. I'm very glad I did!

It's so funny how things in life sometimes happen. Last week I have all this time off from work and nothing going on so I get on the internet to start looking for snow within a days drive, nothing. I decide to call New Moon Ski shop in Hayward Wisconsin to see what the XC Ski conditions are like. This is how the conversation with the woman who answered went:

Me: Hi, how's the ski conditions right now
Her: Nonexistent right now it's bone dry, sorry. :cryin:
Me: Ugh that's too bad I'm calling from Minneapolis and I was so hoping you guys would have snow to ski on.
Her: No sorry, it's so bad here we've just been biking.
Me: Hmmmm that stinks.....wait a minute did you say biking?
Her: Yeah
Me: Mountain Biking....on the trails?
Her: Yeah they are great right now hard and fast.
Me: They aren't wet? :D
Her: Nope dry as a bone.

So it was decided a trip was in order. We got going and of course it was misting rain here in the morning when we left, and that continued for quite some time on the way up there. Then we got into a pretty good amount of snow, but as we got closer to Hayward the snow was thinning and I thought everything would be just fine. We get to the trailhead and it is covered in a beautiful heavy coat of about two fresh inches of snow, and all I can think is "crap" this may not be good. I was wrong it couldn't have been better, it was perfect winter riding conditions, first off it was absolutley beautiful, secondly the temp was just right to make the snow perfect to ride on, traction was great and the trail was awesome. I've been riding this area for about twelve years and this will go down as one of the coolest days I've ever been up there, and probably my best winter ride ever. Absolutely magical and I needed a ride like that to restore my faith in midwest winters. At points on the trail we were riding through heavily forested areas that of course are usually covered in leaves but this trip it was snow and it felt like you were riding through little snow tunnels on singletrack, it was so very cool.

Thanks to all who made it and helped share something really cool with me, and hopefully in the future we can do this again and bring others up to share this experience, it was great!

Thanks again everyone I still had a smile on my face this morning when I woke up!!! :)

Sure Dan twist the knife! I am sitting here hacking up a lung and wondering if my arsenal of medication, predisone, albuteral, and Z pack will enable me to ride again, and thinking, well at least it is raining and ****ty so I can not ride anyway and then you post this description of The Promised Land! You have to promise me to go again sooooooon! like next weekend?

I am glad that you had such a good time. Who went, and which trails did you conquer?

I'm not trying to rub it in...but it was amazing! It was my first ride through the snow ever and it couldn't of been more beautiful! The trails rocked and the weather was perfect. I've been craving a good ride lately and a nice snowfall. It was very peaceful riding through the woods in complete silence with the pines all cover in white. well peaceful until someone layed on their dang brakes!!!

Sorry Lisa, it was just too good for me not to try and share a little piece of it with everyone. We just did Rock Lake and I'm not sure how many miles we got in but I think it was close to 15, we backtracked a few times. Usual suspects were myself, Don, Greg, Al, Katie, John, and Dirk. We averaged a little over 6 miles per hour and at points because of the snow it was a little bit of a push, but there were other points where we were whipping around corners sliding out of control and using the trees as bumpers.

If they get more snow it will be ski season and I'm not sure what kind of traffic the trail gets in the winter but I will keep my ears open and keep calling them to see what comes of the trail and weather. I would assume that the trail shuts down after some more snow, we just happen to have hit it on just the right day and just the right conditions. But hey it's almost January and that means that Spring is only five months away..........ok that didn't come out the way I wanted it too. Well it won't be too long now and I promise next year Cable and Hayward will be destined rides numerous times!!!

I hope you feel better Lisa!!! Happy New Year!!! :)

Although I could write an entire series based on personal experience, I'm now accepting anecodtes, testimonials, tell-alls and compromsing photos from anyone who wants in.

Thanks again, it was a fun ride, looking forward to Sat. ride up in Duluth on the Hartley trail, debating if I'm mounting my stud's tonight or just have fun with plain ol'rubber..

That picture will go in a collection of many. As I told you guys that trail means a lot to me and so do all the people who have been up there with me so I love to have the history for when I get all nostalgic and tour my pictures. So thank you Don for the pictures and thank you Dirk for taking it. Based on the weather we may get another ride like that up there this year again if things don't change. Hope so!!!:)
