i'm hearing rumours about a killer ride in duluth jan 6th.

hopefully us locals are manly enough to get invited. [hint hint...]

this does sound like fun--"ride is 7 miles over terrain that does not allow you to get much more than into 3rd gear. It takes a long time."

email me off-forum if you'd rather not post here.

So I have to bring my XC Skis, my snowboard, my BigHit, and my SS (if I can fix it). I won't have room for anyone else then......;)

i talked to my riding krew last night and we will NOT be doing this ride. we don't think the ice is safe enough
and doubt the weather will be cold enough to form safe ice by that time.
if you want to ride some of our trails, which right now rock, we'll be glad to show you around. the riding is much
better in the summer when we host the dulluth rides. i post them on the morc forums. watch for them next summer

Yeah, I have been in touch with Kurt on this. We can ride the normal off-road trails....they are really good....and still do the ski thing if you want. Let's figure this out through email.

I didn't think it was physically possible, but this both sucks and blows.

I'm still up for the skiing part of it, though. I'm going to the Whites the weekend after so I need to get some piste action before that!

I think learning how to board now is a bad idea.....skis are cool. Rip it up on your skis and you can learn how to board on the little hills around here. Maybe Buck or Hyland.

No, no. Shad is right. As always (Shad: go ahead and yuck it up). I'll be the lone skier in the pack of snowboarders. The rube. The odd ball. The one who will be talked about and ridiculed. Hopefully this doesn't happen again:
http://www.mariemalinowski.com/images/DSC00661.JPG

There's nothing more humiliating than a ride on the ski patrol tobaggon...especially with all the snowboarders pointing their fingers, laughing, and saying, "Haw haw!! Should'a been on a 'board!"

The Munger Inn http://www.mungerinn.com/wmi_skiing.html

Has a good deal we need 4-6 people to commit for saturday night and ski on SUNDAY. Its about $40 per person for a 2 room whirlpool suite which includes lift tickets for sunday. (lift tix are $40 daily anyhow)

So far its me, Josh, Jlho, for hotel deal. Shad, Kurt & Marie are in for Fitgers Brewery Saturday night. Josh & I may hit up Grandmas later in the night. And then ski/board on sunday.

Any other takers? I would like to get 3 more to commit for hotel & ski package. Maura, Tiffany?? head out after patrol training?? Let me know!

Funny! I'm going to duluth for a late family xmas and spending saturday at my brother's place right on Hartley trail (actually, it's literally out his backdoor). I might have to ride in the AM due to family matters later in the day so hopefully I'll see some of you. Here's the kicker, dinner is planned for fitger's later that night and the last time I ate at Fitgers was the same night Shad and the fall ride crew were at the table next to us. If it's ridable, I'll be out!

OK - I totally spaced that this Sat. is my work holiday party..
So I need to be back at my place around 4PM to get ready and head over there.

What time and where do you all plan on riding? Hartley trail?
That be the place I did my first ride on the Turner and crashed pretty bad due to going too fast on the wet/leave covered bridge and did not make the turn! Soupie, Ozzielongboarder, Kurt, and I were on that ride (on our way up to ride Lusten, where it snowed by the way)..

If I can make it work, I'll be there, but it will just be for the ride for the most part.

So what are you saying Dirk? Another Saturday morning....waking up at the butt crack of dawn? What time do you think we would need to leave by on sat morning??

I know Noah doesnt have a problem with butt cracks...just asked him about the 8 inch stick on NYE:laugh:

Tough call, but at least this is easier/quicker than going to Cable (more 4 lane HW with I35).

If we leave around 8 - ride at 10:45, I'm on the road back around 2.. Should work.

No comment on the "crack" -

If anyone else needs to just do the day trip, your welcome to ride with me up there.

I'll know more by Fri. afternoon - but as of now, I'm planning/hoping on going!

i'd like a head count for the ride on saturday.

bring a lawn chair to hang out in the garage.

the hartley singletrack is 90% nice packed snow and 10% kinda icy.
this could change before sat tho...

bring the studds or biggest tyres you have. we rode thursday pm w/o studds and it was fine, for us.

if you need directions to my house, email me off-list.

park on the odd side of the street.

Thanks for the heads up on the trail, still debating if I should mount the studs or not.
How are the bridges? That's my main worry, if you remember last time I rode up there with you, I slid off the bridge going too fast and nailed my shin on a fairly large rock (& I still have a indentation there!).

That's a good question o where to meet..

I would think some where N of 694 on I35 would be easiest.

Though I do not know enough of the area to make a good suggestion.

The Mermaid is up there isn't it? We've met there before on a ski trip.

Thoughts? Also meet around 8:15/20 - roll out of meeting place by 8:30..

you did look good crashing tho...

we rode it last night and the bridges were not really slippery, but we weren't going mach 2...and we won't be running too fast on sat either.

the majority of the trail was{the key word} packed snow w/ some icy spots in the lower areas. some turns were slippery, some you could rail. i know i'm not helping much but...

if anyone isn't a good ice rider, put on studds. we've been riding on nokian3.0 and endomorphs w/o any trouble.

hopefully i've answered your ??'s

OK - well, that would mean we (Tiffany & I) would have to leave earlier..
Let's meet somewhere after 35W and 35E meet up (so I35).. I forgot where you live, and see why 35W wouldn't work so great for you either.

I'll call you in the morning as well - around 7:50 to confirm.

Never did get my studded tires mounted, they are UST.
I got the rear one, but the front never took, so I tried swapping tires, figured, if anything I wanted the front to be studded. Didn't work.. Oh well, I guess I'll be the show tomorrow (I mean today!)..

I love studs!!!

Rapids Riders reserves the Brooklyn Center pool every Sunday night for winter skills sessions. The water is warm and there's no current, drops or rocks. I hurt my shoulder when I was doing a C2C roll. I swept my paddle out to far and that hosed my hip snap. Had to over-correct on the paddle sweep and pulled something vital in my shoulder. It's being taken care of, though.

Two attempt to re-rail the thread;

Thanks Kurt for being trail guide for the day and letting everyone meet at your place.

Studs are overrated, just like good hips shoulders and knees.

Now worthless bantor.

Wine is NOT my best friend but Blue 100 might be.

I lost my phone Spirit,..... Already got a call someone found it.

A four hour ski pass can be good for all day if played correctly.

OK - it was not such a great ride for me.. I diced it maybe 3 times and said that was it for me..
Maybe the worse thing - trying to put my bike shoes down on ice, twice I just tumbled over - my tail bone still is a little sore from the first one.
Bummed that I just didn't mount the studded tires to my tube wheel set!!

As a side note: Conti-Vertical Pro's do not work well on ice! Once I let most of the air out of my tires (had maybe 10 or 15 lbs in them) - I found I could ride better - but still had issues.

Bet you all had fun later that night and on Sun. skiing - wish I could of stayed, but had that work function (which was OK)..

What's on tap for this weekend?

I run the same tire and I thought it did allright on the ice, I can see how others would be better though. The tire does however rock in snow. The tall, sparse lugs really grip in the packed snow.
