Lets try this again. The weather wasn't on our side last week, so hopefully we can get our ride in this week.
Post up if you can make it.

Even though it tastes like Ovaltine, and is flat with artificial carbonation and maybe food coloring, Technically, it is still beer. So, I take back the bad stuff I said about it on Thursday. Still, forgive me for being rude if I BmyOB.

I was planning on riding tonight, but I think it's going to be too soft with temps getting up to 40. A friend rode Salem on Saturday but quit when he saw he was leaving ruts.

We're going to watch the weather and see what happens. This one might be too difficult to call, so we might end up going there with the idea of not riding if its at all wet. We'll just bring extra refreshments... ;)

If James or someone says it's too wet to ride or it is marked closed, we will cancel.
Otherwise, we will proceed gingerly and check out the trail. If the trail turns out to be soft, we will head back to the lot where we will have extra "emergency" beers.
Edit: JL types faster than me. I am hopeful that it has dried significantly since Saturday. We'll see.
BTW, Bob, tell your friend thanks for doing the right thing.

On the other hand I may be giving handmade jewelry created from this sudden surge of bottle caps I keep finding in the back of my car. :etard:

If we're going by the Reinheitsgebot (German Purity Law) adopted in 1516, it is... so people who feel otherwise would just be embarassing themselves.
But this is not for the group ride forum... so I digress... ;)

Just so everyone remembers, after ride refreshments at Salem are of the Overone can have variety, just as it says on the sign in the parking lot.
We would not want something to happen that might reflect poorly on MORC.
Thanks
James
P.S. If I get things done tonight I might be able to show up, if not, somebody give me a call when your done and I'll show up with a keg of homemade rootbeer.
I'm out, with the temps this high I would guess this trail will be questionable to ride. :cryin:

We will check the trail carefully before riding. My guess is that we'll be ok. It got warm, but it was fairly cold last night and the last couple of days. The hourly forecast appears to have us around freezing by the time we would ride.
Its one of those gambles I guess... I'm won't feel bad just hopping around the parking lot and having a root beer.

I don't think its BYOB anymore. That was back in the day when they had splash guards and the dancers were second rate. They have greatly improved the inside of that place and the dancers. Better than Sheik's for sure and it won't cost a third as much for the night.
Anyways, I won't be there tonight cause I decided it was too beautiful out to go at night. The trail will be fine. I've gone the last 2 days and its tacky in the usual places. My tread left an imprint but no valley. Their are some ruts from the weekend and some really bad mtn bikers who can't keep there ride on the trail. Other than that I can't see why you couldn't ride it tonight. Have fun!:etard:

Oh yeah. Great ride. :eyeroll:
You left me alone! In the woods! In the dark! I was completely lost and disoriented! I heard dogs barking and there were wolves after me!
I could see a snake of bike lights slithering across the expanse, that is the abyss of Salem Hills at night, but I couldn't find the right trail to connect with the safety of the group. I don't even know how I got separated from the pack, but so did Nita because she turned around to go look for me! And then she was lost and riding alone!
Never been so happy to see a Berryweise in my life.

I did find solace in watching my son play his first high school basketball game, all of 30 seconds. And then watch as Kennedy beat cross town rival 3rd rank Jefferson.

All I could think about was the Blair Witch Project again....I heard you behind me, everything was cool and then when I turned around you were gone! Talk about creepy, I don't know who I was behind, but I figured you sure weren't behind me or anywhere to be seen, not even your lights! Oh yeah great, I'm backtracking into those woods whispering to myself: "there are no witches, its all not true..." What a pansy I am.
BUT...that trail is GREAT to ride at night, at least we did get in one full lap. Bob, if the women lead, or should I say if I do, you know we are talking full-on leisure, stargazing and singing caroles? You guys would be very bored, probably all talking on your cell phones and text messaging each other on who's idea was this!

We have a strict group ride buddy system... it apparently broke down at some point.
We do stop regulary to re-group. This was when we noticed the breakdown in the buddy system. It can happen so quickly...
We were about to send out a search and rescue squad, but she ended up showing up about 2 minutes later... just before the wolves, rabid dogs and aliens showed up.
CNN was notified shortly after.

Incident report: We were out on our regularly scheduled ride, when we found the two women out wandering aimlessly in the vast forest of Salem Hills. We graciously brought them into our group, and treated them as our own. However, they somehow got lost again, but made their way back to the parking lot where they were treated for dehydration.
Fortunately, we always end our rides with a reverse-sweep, then a double-reverse sweep of the entire trail. This is done purely for safety reasons. So, the likelihood of anyone spending the night with the cyotes is small.

Yeah, but Nita got lost too! Noboby ever found her! She was searching frantically for me, calling my name, I was calling her name, no response, and than the wolves started chasing me, the aliens landed and threatened to beam me up to their ship, but thankfully, I ride a Specialized Stumpjumper. They couldn't catch me.

I am going to have to point out that all the women seem to have gotten lost. Were they too embarrassed to stop and ask for directions? Was it an omen that 2/3s of them got lost just getting to the trail? Maybe if they had arrived at the ride on time and attended the pre-ride, get your buddy meeting, this could have all been avoided. I just could not let this go unnoticed.

Did not think that it was possible to get lost on a MOCR trail. Just keep riding and you will eventually recognize that you have been there before.

If this were Leb a few people would be screaming at me to improve the signage...
I won't do that here, although I do think in general all our trails could be reviewed in this respect and made clearer. Honestly I've ridden Salem a couple dozen times and I still take the wrong trail here and there.
No ~5-10 mile trail should be something you can get lost on.

Isn't that more for the level of advancement of the different trails at Leb for liability purposes (i.e. beginner, intermediate, advanced) vs. not getting lost?
There are signs at Salem at each intersection that label the direction, North loop/south loop and how to get to the lot.
Bob geting all confused and taking wrong turns on the sweeper lap isn't all bad :p

I think I just need to ride it during the day and/or see a map and it would be more clear. I have a hard time seeing the wording on the signs at night, and the way the term trailhead is used confuses me a bit. (thats my fault most likely)
More consistency between all our trails would probably help everyone quite a bit... its not any one specific trail really. I take enough heat over Leb to know how fun it is to be picked on relentlessly over nit picky issues. ;)
