This was a great ride years ago before it became a drunk fest. My Wife was bugging me to do it again, so she could try and we did it again in 2001 with much regret. It seems to be now less about the biking and trip and more about the booze they can sell. Every overnight town we stayed in, had rider parties going until after midnight, even the rules state nothing after 10 PM, so the riders can sleep. We also saw lots of "team buses" being driven by people under the influence after they switched team members in some of the pass trough towns which was also not allowed, which is scary. Ragbrai looks the other way on this, which is going to get them in trouble soon.

I would say do it once in your life to say you have done it, but realize what they portray and what you get are 2 very different things.

Maybe we should somehow start one in MN .....im sure there are some resources here in our own town to do something like this
.....I mean why not theres roads everywhere, all we need a route planned, people to support, food, and a sag wagon. cant be to hard to start one even if its only a handful of people who join the first ride it has to satrt somewhere.

TOUR DE LAKES Minnesotas own ragbrai

I did this in Colorado for riders with kids and called it GRACO (Great ride across Colorado) with fairy good success. There was no fee and the support was provided by the riders and families swapping SAG vehicle duty. It was more of a socialist, communal, maybe even pagan event. If someone was really interested in this, I would be willing to help with this.

I've been attending 22 years in a row and hope not to miss out again. There are lots of ways to go about having a good time... depends upon how adventurous you are. You can go and avoid the party, or you can join in. For the last 12 years, I've been going fully loaded on a touring bike carrying all my own gear. That simplifies things quite a bit and allows you to stay out of the main campgrounds if you want.

RAGBRAI version of Gatorade.

I defiantley like the idea of a NO CHARGE type of ride, especially a family orienetd one. I would be up for starting something. Maybe just a weekend trip to start and I knwo my wife wouldnt mind driving a sag wagon/ repair vehicle. My van can hold a lot....After the first of the year we should try to get together anyone who would be up for such a ride and get a weeekend planned. Not during ragbrai though becasue I still plean to go to ragbrai...let me knwo what you think

What is another project aded to my plate. The only difference is that my Wife actually supports this idea! Yes, let's get together for a beverage after the holidays to start the juices flowing.

That sounds good, but we should verify the date of the upcoming patroller training that Dan is putting on, as that is another project of mine. Also, we should try to coordinate a carpool if others are heading up that way like Paul.

Gus,
Sorry it took so long to get back to you on this, but you know how kids and family are. When do we want to try and get something on the burner? On a side note, I am doing the Root River trail with my oldest boy over spring break (3/31 - 4/6) averaging about 10-15 miles a day, so let me know if you are interested.
