I'm a newcomer to mountain biking but lately I've been riding Lebanon 3-4 days per week. I'm interested in joining you for Thursday's night ride. Now the stupid question ... do you all use a light on your bike? Is it 100% necessary as I don't have one?

Hi Tim. Welcome to the forums and MORC.
In short, yes. Lights are absolutely necessary. Most riders have very bright lights -- not the camping headlamp types. Most of us have a light on our handlebars and another one on our helmet. It will probably cost you a couple hundred bucks for a minimal setup. If you are handy at soldering and know a little bit about electricity, the homebrews are not that difficult to make, and will save a substantial amount of cash. If you are loaded, you can get top of the line HIDs for about 500 bucks each.
If you'd like to join us, I'll scare up an extra homebrew handlebar light for you to try out this week. Let me know soon enough to make sure it works, and get it charged up. It's not pretty, but it works well. My spare setup assumes 1-inch bar clamp (not the oversized kind). It will also help a lot if you have a seat bag to store the battery. It is possible that someone else might have a helmet light to loan you.
Lately we have split up into 2 groups. So, if you are not comfortable riding the X and XX sections quickly, you can ride with the fun group. If you are stupid and want to beat your body, you can chase the go-fast group.

Welcome to the forums Tim.
In all seriousness you should join in to one of these night rides. It's a great group of fun loving people, and riding at night is almost more fun than riding in the day. Especially when you're chasing the go-fast group. :crazy2:

I have an extra helmet mount you can try if you'd like to try a night ride. Let me know. All you need is a backpack to hold the battery and a helmet to mount the light on.

Bob,
Thanks for the offer ... count me in. Please let me know if for some reason your homebrew handlebar light doesn't work. I'll also just plan on duck-taping one of those big MagLite flashlights on my head.
Count me in for the slow group ... I hope I'm not riding alone!

Ryan, I'll give your helmet light a try. Will the batter fit in my seat bag?

Tim, you will need to keep your helmet light battery on your body. When you fall, it is best to not be wired to your bike. Camelback, fanny pack, jacket zip pocket, etc. will all work.
Bring your seat bag for the handlebar light battery.
Also, plan to show up about a half-hour early (around 6pm). That'll give us 15 minutes to get your lights working, and another 15 minutes that it usually takes to get our bikes ready to go. We try to start pedaling at 6:30, unless Theo people are there. ;)
Hopefully the weather will hold. Keep an eye on this thread for last-minute decisions.
See you there.

Ryan and Bob,
Thanks again for letting me use your lights on Thursday night. I have a friend who is also interested in riding (he's probably in the fast group) ... any chance you might have handlebar and head lights for him also?

I fixed the connector on an old battey pack, and put the packs on my bench power supply. So, I can supply another handlebar light. (Note: The mounts won't work well with oversized bars.)
Your friend will be fine with it, even if he doesn't get a helmet light.

After last Thursday's mangled elbow, blood-stained shirt, smashed knee, $45 for a new rotor and $30 for new light bracket, I've decided to trade in my bike for a pair of knitting needles and knitting lessons.

I'm out.
I've got a meeting with Jennifer of the MPRB that night to discuss mountain biking taking over the world.
I also have a helmet mounted light someone can use if they need it. That way, at least my stuff would get to have fun.

I'm in need of a rear wheel. Requiring 9-speed shimano compat. freehub with disc mounts. If I can find a cheap one I'll be out.
Please see my thread in For Sale. (http://www.morcmtb.org/forums/showthread.php?p=188921#post188921)

It is REALLY nice out there. Should be a good ride.
I have 2 homebrew handlebar lights for Tim and his friend. I'll try to be there around 6pm, so that we have enough time to get them all hooked up. Make sure you bring a seat bag to hold the batteries.
I'm trying on a brand new set of Panaracer Rampage 29 x 2.35s tonight. If they're as good as I've heard, I'll be waiting up for the group formerly known as fast.

Last week got the flu shot and rode like complete Sh** then it all went down hill from there. Ended up having a really nasty reaction. Hope that you do not follow suit. See all next week for getting some riding in.

Thanks everyone for letting Chad and I tag along.
Bob & Ryan ... thanks again for letting us use your lights. Ryan ... your helmet light went out on me midway through. It seemed to work again once I got back to the parking lot ... go figure! I hope nothing is wrong with it ... let me know.

Tonight was just about the perfect night to ride. I couldn't believe how many people showed up for the night ride! I definately need to start showing up for more of these group rides. The few people in the front of the group definately have some technical skillz. It was really fun to follow you guys!
