Will you actually be in Red Wing on Saturday? Or is Hastings calling your name?
As for the ride...
10 am sounds good, I should be there. If there aren't going to be millions of vehicles I'd suggest parking just after the road splits, as it's closest to the "start" of the trails. Everyone bring your climbing legs (but I'm guessing Greg is going to want to hit the full DH trail too... so be ready for anything). Let's hope the weather holds out.
Isaac
I think I am going to come down for some big bike fun, and to scope out the spot Gus has been mentioning for maybe a DJ area. So I'll be there with my bikes, AND shovel. Probably do a little diggin' on the DH too.

Have you actually ridden in Red Wing this year Greg? I know you were down for one of our marathon DH build sessions. Hopefully you've gotten to ride it... if not the DH is in pretty awesome shape if I recall correctly (we actually rode down it last Thursday after our backwards night ride and while us XCers were walking parts it was fast and holding up fine).

You're insane Buck. I'll throw my shovel and rake in the car too. Might not use it as I want to get in more of a ride than you're probably up for (with the other options available to ya). Depending on what you want to get done, where you are working I may be able to get a gate open for you. Gus is out of town, so hopefully he's actually talked to you about the DJ stuff.
Let's hope the weather holds out!

Hey Nita!
They have an awesome XC system down there, and this is what this ride if for. I just piped in cuz I might be down in the area too, and if ya all are rippin the XC stuff you should stop by the DH course and say HI!

Buck is correct. Totally worth the trip to ride XC. Memorial has some awesome trails.
I might be down there. I think I will go the BigHit route this time....:) Did you hear that Buck? The forecast isn't looking too good, but it is only Tuesday.
Of course I'm in. Might even gather enough currage to check out the DH section and watch. :D

Sounds like fun, it's been a while since I've rode down there (like 2 months)..
OK - I just saw that the Monticello ride is the 18th.. So either I'm hitting Red Wing with 'chu all or I'll roll-it at Mammoth (weather permitting of course)

If we're starting around 10 am, I wouldn't think that getting home in the 3-4 time frame would be a problem at all. The XC stuff, if you do EVERYTHING would give you a lap of maybe 7 miles or so? On our Thursday night group rides we take breaks fairly often and get a 5/8 lap done in about an hour or so. My guess is that by 1-1:30 at the latest we'd be well done riding the XC stuff and completely baked.
Any singlespeeders planning on making their first trek down to the trails?
Also... do people like a bit more technical climbs? We could try and tackle the Cowpath too (though it's not connected to the other trails at all). Don't know how many "city-folk" have ridden that before.

I'll rephrase my earlier statement... If people want I can show you where the Cowpath is... it's a fun rock (not big rock for the most part) and root and leaf infested descent down to the bottom of the hill.
Don't forget Stairway to Heaven also. That climb is fun.
No way are we missing Stairway. I love the singletrack that leads to it, and I love to hate that sadistic climb.
Though this time I will put the 34 on the front as the 36 just about destroyed my knee last time.
I may be dropping to a 32 from my standard 34 just to give myself some semblance of chance of getting up Stairway and from the Quarry (on a 29er I run 34-20 usually).
Weather looks to be ok... or at least dry....
Fingers are crossed. The weatherpeople swung and missed on the last two days (at least the long range forecast) so I'm hoping things shape up ok.

Hi Nita,
The coarse at Red Wing is very fun. The trail is between Mammoth and Leb in difficulty. There are a couple of long hard climbs that are a great work out but not technically hard. There is a fun swooping section in and out of a creek bed at the beginning of the trail, that is very easy when you get the rhythm, but not so easy if you take it too slowly!
The crew has built many fun stunts, teeter, bridges, rail, and all the down hill stuff. There are go around's for the hard structures.
The Down Hill section sub sects the Cross Country course for a short fun berm down hill then the cross country section turns and the down hill continues to the more difficult drop section that ends at the golf course at the bottom.
Near the end of the XC loop is a very technical stream bed. It is ridable, but caution should be taken. There are go arounds that let you do the loop without going into the stream bed and rock quarry area at the bottom.
See you down there, I may be a little late but I will be looking for you.

Thanks Buck, Shad & Lisa for your input on the trail for me! Lisa you are a woman-god as far as stunt-riding goes, I'd be happy just to tail behind and watch you...heh-heh... :p
I sure hope we can make this, depends on our kids *sigh* and what their schedules are. If we can't make the 10:00 starting time, we'll just be late and maybe catch up somehow.

There's a good chance I'll be flagging trail on Saturday rather than riding it, but if I get lucky, I'll be trying to hit up someone to trade transportation for beer :)

Ok.... forecast says we could get upwards of 5" of snow tonight/early tomorrow (this is from adding what the NOAA says for tonight and tomorrow). I HIGHLY doubt that we'll get this, or anything close to it. I will head up to the bluff after work tomorrow to check on the trails. They are super dusty right now, so I still have hope that the ride will be on (though if we get 5" of snow it might be a bit crappy). Please check back tomorrow evening for updated conditions.

Updated conditions in Red Wing:
5+ inches of wet snow (the rate is tapering off now) has fallen in the early morning hours. The ground below is not frozen, so I can say with about a 99% certainty that Memorial will not be rideable by tomorrow morning. I'll still give a final report this evening but while there is still time alternate trail plans should probably be made.

The people who run Camp Manitou in Monticello close it during deer hunting season. There is no hunting on their land, but they know the hunters are all around and sneak in once in awhile so they just close it to be safe. The jail trail is about 5-6 miles. I like it alot, but some people may think it's worth the drive, others may not.

Not to derail where this thread is heading but I'll state the obvious....
Memorial Park is closed to riding for the time being. I don't have an accurate measurement but at least 6" (and I bet closer to 8") fell on us this morning. We may be lucky to get in another ride before the big freeze occurs. So this weekend is a definate no go. Keep an eye on either the Memorial Park forum here, or the trails conditions page as I'll be updating when conditions change.
