View Full Version : Moving our web site to a new host

In the next few days I will be moving the morc site to a new web host provider.

We had been talking about doing this for a while now, especially after all the outages we had a few weeks back.

We are running out of space, and all too often the site becomes unavilable due to our host overloading their servers.

What does this mean to you?

When the site is changed over, the IP address changes. This means that the (dns) name morcmtb.org has to be updated on the Internet to reflect the new IP address. Normally this takes 24-48 hours, but some corporate systems don't update as often so it can possibly take longer or shorter depending. Some may see the update immediately.

What I will do is close the old server forums when the move takes place. This means you will no longer be able to post. I will post a link to the new site using the new IP address so that people can access it prior to the dns name change taking place. You will have to log into the new site. Eventually you will want to stop using the IP address link and go back to using morcmtb.org - this is just our way of helping people stay connected to the forums during the change.

If something goes wrong during the move we will just switch back. Watch for news on this posted on either of the sites. Its always good to have a backout plan.

The new host will up our online space from 1 gigabyte to 9 gigabytes! This will allow us to permit larger photos in the gallery, but I think it would be good to continue to use youtube for things like multimedia and insert links as we have been doing. 9 gigabytes sounds like a lot now, but in another year I'm sure we will be wanting more.

More on this to come...

If you are seeing this, welcome to the new web host and new home.

Some things may work strangely for a while until morcmtb.org is changed over to the new IP address. We hope this is only temporary.

You should be using morcmtb.net temporarily.

Note that clicking on the Calendar link appears to be causing problems for some people. This should be fixed when the domain morcmtb.org gets moved over correctly.

Until then, you can still see the events on the main page and on the forum index.

I am changing the internal links of the web site back to morcmtb.org.

This may cause you to have to re-login again.

If you don't see things correctly I suggest closing out your browser and re-loading, or a complete reboot to refresh your cached dns information (tech talk).

If you still have problems feel free to let me know via PM. Not all companies and locations refresh their internet addressing information as quick as they should.

You can still probably access the forums at www.morcmtb.net/forums (http://www.morcmtb.net/forums) if you need too, but some of the links on the navbar and buttons will re-direct you to the .org domain.

Thanks for your patience during this move.

Small change to www.morcmtb.com (http://www.morcmtb.com)

It is now just a front-end telling people how to get to our regular web site, www.morcmtb.org (http://www.morcmtb.org)

This was changed because some people forget we're .org and this way they will be able to find their way home.

As of this weekend www.morcmtb.net (http://www.morcmtb.net) will become our development site again, which will be closed to the public.

No joke. Its working fine now. I tried it three times and it kept doing that to me. I thought it was really strange.

Is it just me, or are the post counts not increasing? Not that I care a whole lot, but I seem to be stuck at 140 posts.

erhh,,, nevermind - I remember now. No posts counted in the Non-biking section.

You are at 141 :) Posts made in the non-biking discussion section don't count. Otherwise Shad would be at like 15,000 posts.

edit: ya beat me to it.

I just got notification that our previous web host, the one we were using up until a few weeks ago, had a MAJOR failure yesterday evening. They lost the entire drive array that held all the hosted web sites & forums and had to go back 24 hours to get a good restore.

If we would have stuck with them, we would have lost 24 hours of forum information etc.

Not the end of the world, but its nice not to lose data like that.

Guess we moved just at the right time.

Regarding our current host, they have been checking with me to be sure things are running a bit better. I notice a few delays once in a while, but nothing like it was a week ago when they were running backups during our morning hours.

Sorry for the recent server outages. Once again our host has underestimated the load that our forums generates. They are going to try to move us to a new server to help with the situation. They tried last night, which is why we all got errors this morning - someone there messed up the database and it had to be restored.

Hopefully the outages will be kept to a minimum.

We will be looking into moving off shared/virtual hosts entirely onto something more dedicated in the next year. We just need to figure out if the cost is justified etc.

Our host moved our web site and forums to a new and more powerful server last night.

The promise is that we won't continue to see the nasty interruptions that we have in the past few weeks.

We'll see.....
