View Full Version : I'm a wuss! Training indoors in the winter

Ok, first let me start off by saying that, yes, I know I should still be riding and running outdoors and that I'm a big wuss for not liking to run and bike outside once it gets cold. Even my wife tells me this. Daily. :p
That being said, I'm starting my membership up at the YWCA again (I really like their indoor track, and for a two person membership it's only $54 a month (after a $20 a month health insurance discount)) and I figure that I should at least take advantage of more than just the track and :cryin:stationary:cryin: bikes.
Any tips or online guides for a little bit of strength training for bikers? I know my right leg is at least a little bit stronger than my left so I'd like to try and balance that out at least somewhat. Is that as simple as doing some one legged work on the leg press and leg curl machines? Anything else I should focus on?

exrx.net has some nice workout templates (2,3,4 day type stuff). Do they have free weights? They are the best for any workout. I would do leg press for both legs, but keep the weight for right stagnant and move up on the left.
I recommend squats for hitting all the quad heads that don't usually get hit when biking. Deadlifts for the hams, lower back, and calves. And don't forget the upper body: shoulder press, chest press, and pullups.

This topic could almost be a dissertation….you should PM me, or stop by the shop. I’ll set ya straight.

One wuss calling another wuss not a wuss does not make you not a wuss;) . JK

Joe Friels book "the mountain bikers training bible" has pretty good information in it for total body weight training.

I'm in good company then...My road bike is living on my trainer for the past week. If i'm going to watch tv at night, I might as well be riding my bike while I do it.

This morning on my daily commute down Cedar Lake Road, I saw a car pull out of the Sunset [or whatever they're called] condos, pull in to the health club RIGHT NEXT DOOR and park.

He then probably drove around the parking lot until a spot opened up near the door.

I stopped in recently and you weren't there! I feel like people are going to think I have a man crush if I keep calling to ask if you're there.

I do miss running. It was way too hard on my body otherwise i'd be running right now.
Really, I never minded running in colder, even winter weather. I'd get so warm running I'd never have to put on too many layers. To me, running when it's cold and biking when it's cold are two very different things. Biking when its cold is FREEZING! It's that whole wind chill factor thing I just never quite liked about biking in the cold. You don't get that anywhere near as much running somehow.

Squats, lunges and balance board action.
You should focus on catching the fit heinie of the gal in front of you during spin class. You'll never get there, but the effort is worth it...
