So... Tuesday the 31st is Halloween. Anyone up for some kind of MORC group ride and Halloween event?
We've thought about this for a few years in a row now and nothing has really come of it.. maybe this year?
Thoughts:
Group Ride at ?
Bonfire at ?
Ride in your costume
Treats
Beverages
Scary people (like Bob, Ted and myself...)
Doesn't have to be *on* Halloween for those who are all grown up and have to take care of the kids....

I think there are monsters in Theo at night anyways so let's just do a night ride through Theo! :D
Ride at leb, all [censored], with a bonfire across the way at the camp grounds. It is a Tuesday evening so we should not have to much company over there for all the tricks.

I was thinking a ride somewhere close to a place that could hold a campfire would be the ticket. I haven't checked on the logistics of a fire over at the campsite yet, perhaps its time to do that...

No rocks necessary. Definitely a night costume ride is the ticket...
Maybe even some scary stuff placed out on the trail if we had the time and really wanted to get fancy.

hmmm...sounds complicated...what's wrong with just bikes, beer, and fire? I vote River Bottoms, it's spooky down there at night. Bloomington is pretty cool, maybe they'd let us have a fire somewhere if we ask nicely?

A couple of possibilities have come up:
1. Leb
2. Elk River
3. River Bottoms (as per Pete's last post)
4. Mammoth
In the past, ER has had the "boo blast" event and I think its easy to have a bonfire there. Trouble is the distance from the metro for many of us.
We would probably get more people at Leb, but we'd have to check with the county on getting a campsite.
Also, I assume the general opinion would be to have this prior to the actual Halloween day.

There is at least one fire ring on the bluffs on the east side of the river bottoms. also picnic table(s).

I think it is important to say that the costume thing, as fun as it could be, would best be an optional thing.
however i plan on dressing up like Trinity from the matrix, attaching spd cleats to the bottom of some spicey leather boots and riding the trail like that.
what?

You shouldn't tell a bunch of bikers you are dressing up like Trinity - all of a sudden EVERYONE will be buying lights and wanting to join in on the fun.
Costumes definitely optional, but encouraged. What a great photo op to have people dress up. The tough part is working them around the cooler (assumed) weather.
We better be careful though, if we keep having fun events like this people might start to think MORC isn't so stuffy after all.... :D

if thats what it takes to get people to come to this event, then so be it!
also an added thought.... It would probably be best to have this on Friday October 27th, so it doesnt over shadow the Grim Racer MTB race on saturday.

It would only be a far drive if you live in Rosemount or something.;) :p It's only 20 mins from the 494/694 corner...and yup, the fire wouldn't be tough. I may be able to get the compost site opened up for a better campfire/parking area. Much more private and no neighbors to be concerned about. Here's a sample fire from the last couple races we had there this fall.:)

Maybe we don't try make it a huge ordeal this year and just have a costume optional group ride somewhere. Sure would be nice to have a bonfire and treats to go with all the tricks tho.
So far most I've talked too are in favor of the river bottoms as the location.
Sunday looks like the best day/evening by the current forcast. (I know wait 10min.) one more Vote for Leb. John call it this morning so we have a definitive event.

John lets just make it a non-big thing where people come, costume or no costume, and bring something to share and their legs to ride on.
ie- candy, bag of chips and salsa, etc.
and if the city of bloomington is okay with it- why not the river bottoms?

If we aren't concerned about having a campfire and only want costumes and treats, I say we just set a ride for Sunday at the River Bottoms and do something more fancy next year if we have the time and energy...
Now we just need a time and meeting spot and maybe something to try get people to do the costume thing (prizes?)

Before Briana said she would call I had sent an email to the city. This is what I got back (below). Briana, perhaps you can find out about the fire pit that someone mentioned.... perhaps if we knew exactly where it was it would help pinpoint what property it is on... ?
Hi John- Thanks for the email. Unfortunately, the river bottoms are difficult place for to give such an authorization because it traverses so many jurisdictions (City, State, Federal and Private land).
City code states (Section 5.21 (3)) "No fires shall be lighted or made in any park except in places provided for such purposes, and except for fires lighted by City employees engaged in cleaning the area." We do not have any authorized fire pits on City land in the river bottoms.
So, long winded answer, fires are not allowed.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks!

Additional response to my question about a possible firepit:
Perhaps, but also may be a unauthorized pit that we just have not discovered yet. I am not aware of any fire pit authorized by the City on any park land. I have left a message with our Park Maintenance manager to see if I am mistaken, but I do not think so. Will be in touch if I hear differently.

Bonfire / Fire rings are located at Jensen Lake as the campgrounds are closed for the season. Figure bringing out some grillables pre-ride. Ride over to the trail do a few laps and back to finish off a case that we cracked into last night.

I talked to Jeff at the City of Inver Gorve Heights (finally) and he said that Salem Hills doesn't have a provided fire ring, and in order to have any sort of fire in the city there has to be a provided one. Sounds like we might need to all drive over there post ride? Some could be over there early to get the fire and treats situated if they aren't doing a night lap.

So far the day is Sunday. I think we didn't want it on the actual day because so many people would be involved in other things - taking the kids out for treats, stuffing other kids faces with poisoned candy... etc.
The time is rapidly approaching... we need more people to weigh in.
I say we head out to the fire pit early afternoon and claim it. We need someone with wood to pull this off (or at least someone willing to bring some by) We need to decide if the ride will meet at Jensen, or if we want to meet at Leb and head over to the fire post-ride. Either way we need volunteers to watch the fire and guard our spot.
Andy, did they say how late we could keep the fire burning?
I hear the calling for wood. I'd love to bring some but I'll be in Michigan for the weekend and can't guarantee when I'll be back on Sunday. If I do show up it'd probably be later if anything.

I probably will not be able to ride until about 6:30 ish, but I can drop the wood off earlier.

Day ride then eat then night ride then bonfire????
That sounds like a plan.
How about this:
Meet at Lebanon at 4:00pm - do a lap, head over to grab a bite at the fire
Back over to Leb for a night lap at 7:00, then everyone over to Jensen to complete the event.
(at the same time we have someone keeping our spot reserved and monitoring the fire.. a few of us grab the location around 1-2pm just to be on the safe side?)
Bring your own food. Bring some to share. Post up what you are bringing if you like... might help attract more people. I say people in costume get first dibs on the treats!
We need costume judges.
I'm likely in, although probably later. We finally get to have Sunday trailwork at Theo

Lets try this:
Day Lap 4:00pm - Meet at Lebanon Hills Parking Lot. Costumes are not required but are recommended!
Jensen Lake Cookout & Bonfire
Night Lap 7:00pm - Convoy over to Leb from Jensen Lake, Ride, then return for more bonfire fun & festivities.
RSVP here if you plan to come. Please disclose costume if wearing one, and treats if bringing some to share. Also if you can bring wood.
Note: a few of us should head over to claim the firepit earlier. Post up if you are willing to help with the setup etc.
We need volunteer(s) to watch the fire during the day and night laps.
Again, costumes are not required but are recommended... we will be taking tons of photos, so this is your chance to hamm it up and get yourself a place in the MORC gallery...
Post up NOW if you think this agenda should be changed in any way...

So far the day is Sunday. I think we didn't want it on the actual day because so many people would be involved in other things - taking the kids out for treats, stuffing other kids faces with poisoned candy... etc....
Bah. I didn't read the later posts, and was still stuck on the initially proposed day.
Can't make Sunday. Out of town tonight until Monday evening.
I was hoping for Tuesday to give me somewhere to go to avoid the annoying little beggars in carcinogenic face paint that'll be wandering around drooling, tormenting my dog, and periodcially wetting themselves. Anyone else notice that on the morning after Halloween the sidewalks always smell like stale kool-ade urine?

bahhhhhh i am so torn! I mean i said I was going to organize this event but now things are falling apart!
but Noah can get a ride to the airport himself that night -- so I will be there. I'd like to do a night ride, (for real this time) so John if I could barrow your extra light (or Bob) that would be cool. I can sit and guard the fire during the day lap if you'd like -- just tell me how to get there.
now for a costume... I can't find any cheap black spicey boots that I can drill SPD cleats into so Trinity is out.... any other ideas from you boys!?

I'll be there for the night ride at 7 pm and will drop wood off in the afternoon say 2ish at Jensen Lake??????? Meaning I can help set up ( may have the little rugrats with me).
As far as the costume goes, I am gonna have to think up something up...
Andy, did they say how late we could keep the fire burning?
I can show up early and help out. As for the fire as long as it is out when we leave it shoud be fine. They did not specify a closing time when i called.

The sun will be setting at 5:00 or so on Sunday due to changing back from Daylight Savings time.
This might cut the "Daytime Ride" a little short if it rolls out right at 4:00pm and that almost never happens.
Any ideas on this?

so then I would like to make it for the nite ride...is it leaving the trailhead from leb or jensen lake? where is jensen lake ? meetimg in the parking lot at 630 or so if at leb ? god I hope I can make this one. Last time I had one of them was during the 1991 halloween blizzard, when we got 27 inches of snow. It must have looked pretty strange seeing two guys in tutus pushing a minivan out of the parking lot to leave the party.
We got our tutu material off of the wall after a friend's wedding. They used it as frilly stuff around the corners of the reception hall.

It automatically appears under my name when I post a message.
I'm guessing the possibilities are:
A. Everyone knows I'm a novice and a poseur, so why not put it out there for the MORC world to see?
B. I've only been on the MORC site for a few months, so I haven't passed my probationary period or undergone some bizarre initiation rite.
C. I've let my MORC membership lapse, so I'm being punished by being labelled a beginner.
D. I've only done trail work once on the REI trail day, so I haven't advanced to intermediate or advanced Trail status.

F. All of the above.
