Hopefully the weather will cooperate with us and we'll get in another Thursday night ride.

Meet at the lot. Ride starts at 6:45 sharp.

Post up if you can make it so we know who to watch for before we head out.

Might be the last Thursday night ride before the leaves are "taken care of" so if you like riding in it now's your chance.

Say bob, do you notice a strobe-light effect from LEDs at high speeds?

I just tested out my halogen homebrew light based on your designs, and it worked great at the STUPID ride. I guess I'm hopelessly behind the technology curve.

Me too, I want to ride. Can I, huh, can I please???????

Highs in the 30s, might just have to bring out some post ride warmth.

Say bob, do you notice a strobe-light effect from LEDs at high speeds?

No. I'm only using LEDs on my bars. Still have halogen on my helmet. At high speeds, I'm relying primarily on the helmet light.

I wonder if the LEDs you were using had a chopper circuit, or does not have a big enough capacitor on the voltage regulator. LEDs switch on/off so fast that a slow circuit can be visible to your eyes.

My current prototype setup just has a resistor for current control, so there is no chopping.

I just tested out my halogen homebrew light based on your designs, and it worked great at the STUPID ride. I guess I'm hopelessly behind the technology curve.

Glad it worked. My LED setup is still in prototype form, and took a very long time to build. The "in crowd" still uses halogen.

I think I can make this one - let's hope it stays dry - I can ride in the cold.

For the cities I think it is... from where I grew up, its about right.

I just hope we don't get a sloppy wet mess out there that soaks into the leaves and won't allow the trail to dry out.

Yeah, a sloppy wet mess might cause me to do this:

Are you talkin' to me? If so, I gotta a seat bag.
Here's a question that's been plaguing me. Is this going to be a full-hammered, balls-out screamer of a ride or will it swing to the slightly moderate scale being that it's going to be dark?

There is a little of both. But you will be fine because the group waits up and makes sure everyone sticks together. So don't fear...come and ride and enjoy!!

I hope it's for a legitimite reason, and not just because it is cold out. The next 5 months are going to be colder than this, so you may as well start getting used to it. Plus, the extra layer of clothes works well for protecting your skin during a fall.

Being a kayaker, I'm sure you have paddled the north shore rivers in the spring, when you have ice chunks floating next to you. ...or the rivers in Colorado, which are fed by snow melt, and always cold.

This isn't as bad. You won't get an ice cream headache on a mountain bike.

Tonight, all you'll need to do is throw a pair of long johns under your normal biking clothes and bring full-finger (not winter) gloves. You'll be fine. IMO, this is the best time of the year for mountain biking.

Ah, yes. The ice cream headache of the spring meltdown. You know you're kayaking vernacularities. Ever consider getting back into it? A Class IV run produces a better high than cocaine...except it's not as healthy. :D

The truth is, and I speak truthfully because although I don't know any of you (yet), but I feel I'm amongst kindred souls, I fear pain. Since I have yet to clean that new rock garden of death in DAYLIGHT I think my chances of doing it at night is a prescription for a trip to the ER. I'll practice it this weekend and be there next Thursday fer-sur. You have my kayaker's word on that!

I do miss it a lot, but I'll probably not go back. There is so much fun stuff to do, and so little time. The problem is that you have to cut down on your breadth of activities if you want to be good at any one of them.

If you are worried about Ted's curve, just take the ride-around tonight. Nobody will ridicule you. Besides, this weekend is the summit, and I don't know of Leb being on their list.

I'm thinking about trying to make the second lap tonight even though I really have yardwork that should be done so I'm a maybe I guess at this point.

Question: I've got a decent hancle on clothes (I hope) but it looks like it's gonna be about low 30s windchill roughlty high 20s around ride time and I'm not sure what the best approach is for the feet? I just bought mtn biking shoes and they have mesh on the top, so I'm assuming I'll be alright if I can somehow fit a light wool sock on or should I consider putting my platforms back on with a heavier shoe/sock combo?

tedsti
10-12-2006, 12:44 PM
For the feet, wool socks go a long way. Putting some duct tape over the toe vents on your shoes also helps a lot.

Hopefully the snow will stop so that I don't have to either wear glasses or do the blink-blink thing that usually preceeds a high-speed crash.

Here is the deal with the trail. I walked in on the Galaxie side and went backwards down the Joey Trail and it was rock solid. Damp, but no mud anywhere I could see.

That brings me to the next point - most of the trail is submerged in wet leaves.

The leaves apparently took the hit for the trail...

So... I'd say it is ok to ride. I just may be quite slippery and I doubt we'll be doing the full-on beer run. No doubt rocks and logs are quite slippery as well.

I'm still game if everyone else is.

I seriously doubt there would be any trail damage - then again I only saw 1% of the trail. Its more of an "if I really like to ride in wet leaves" kind of decision I think.

After riding the single speed for the last week and a half, I was thinking how nice it was to be back on the full suspension cushie. At least we were able to sort-of make it rideable for the rest of the night. However, with the back pinned in the down position, my chainring was hitting every rock and log, so I had to miss the rev-XX portion.

Marie, that looks like an owie. I hope it was fun enough to convince you to get or make a set of lights and join us next week.

Sure, Bob. I would love to have matching knees!!!

I'm kidding. That photo was taken 2 days after I had my ACL reconstructed back in December.

Well, I'm glad it healed up quickly. I had knee surgery about 3 years ago. The knees still hurt, but they fixed the bad problem. Advil is proof that God loves us.

As is Vicodin and an IV full of Sloe Gin Fizzes.

Well, it turned out to be a decent ride. (other than my blown shock)

I'm assuming it was an air sprung shock? Bummer.

That's why I'm a fan of coil sprung shocks and forks. Who cares about the extra weight, if/when the seals blow, its still ride-able. (really springy, but still ride-able) Ditch the air!

And I thought that was from last night. I had that same surgury twice on my left knee. Not fun at all. The first time in 92 it took 6 - 9 months to heal from and get back on my bike 100%. The one in 99 took about 1 month to heal and get me back on my bike. I would say I was 100% after about 2 months. The advances are amazing. Not even sure how long it takes now....but both of my experiences were vastly different.

Yes, air. It's a Fox Float-R.

From everything I could tell, it seems like some of the pressure leaked from the positive side to the negative. We added pressure to it (probably way too much), which made it rock-hard, but still in the near bottom-out position.

I should have known that I was on borrowed time. About a month ago, I had dampening problems, which we "temporarily" solved by turning the dampening adjuster to almost full-slow position.

This shock is only about 3 months old. My other Float-R is about 3 years old (from my Gary Fisher), and has run flawlessly. Fortunately, they are the same length and stroke, so I plan to swap them tonight (assuming I don't run into any surprises). If that doesn't work, I'll be on the single speed for the summit.

I've thought about switching to coil spring, but decided that the cost was more than I could stomach. I'm currently planning to send it to Push for an extreme makeover.

Did you have one done with an autograph (your own tissue) and one with an allograph (harvested tissue from the dead and gone)?

Healing time with the allograph is much quicker, which is what I used. I started PT the day after surgery and biked in the Black Hills in May so I guess recovery time is really based on how hard you work in PT.

I'm from Arizona but New Hampshire has the best state motto. I use it in every facet of my life!

Some dead guys part is in my knee. So yeah...that was the second one because I didn't want them stealing any more of my other body parts to put me back together......:D

Flag is awesome! I wish I could have gone to school there. My college friend was a city engineer for a few years out there so we'd go out there and hike, bike, and drink!

Flagstaff is indeed an awesome town. Hike, bike and drink is what it's all about! That and skiing. Northern Arizona Univ. is a great school; best known for it's most famous drop-out: Mark Thatcher, the guy who invented Teva sandals!
