sht?? fill me in
Superior Hiking Trail. They have a really well organized club up there, and they're raising a fuss about bikers on the hiking trail. Wondering if anyone from the bike community up there is talking with them at all to help spread the word to stay off the SHT.(and to talk to them about getting us on board with them...it'd be a blast to ride that trail start to finish!)
My guess is Kurt(N. MN IMBA rep.) is talking with them but I don't know.

I'm going to have to side in with the hikers on this one. The Superior Hiking Trail Association designed planned, got the funding, raised the community support, built and maintain the trail as a hiking (and snowshoeing) trail only. There are are few short segments, at Gooseberry, Sugarbush, Lutsen and Pincushion that are shared with bikes, but this is a hiker's trail. It is not even good cross-country skiing, due to the rugged terrain the trail goes over. This is considered and called Minnesota's "crown jewel" hiking trail, and it has huge support from the state capital to the land managers, to the North Shore tourism community. Start salivating over this trail and you are going to make a lot of enemies for mountain biking, real fast. Even the North Shore's MTB advocates do not want to see the tail opened to mountain bikes.
And Forest Service LEOs will ticket you and can confiscate your bike if they catch you riding the trail on National Forest land.
If you want to go on the Superior Hiking Trail, get some boots and a walking stick and take a hike.

Ditto on Hans's comments.
Being a footpath is WAY to ingrained into the history of the trail, and the mission of the Superior Hiking Trail Association.

Right on I'm just passing on a message from the Suprior Hiking Trail folks.
They've been seeing tire tracks on the SHT and wanted to pass it on.
Figured that if someone from Duluth was already talking to them they could help spread the word.
werd.

Talking with SHT makes sense. New sections opened along Spirit Mountain this summer. There’s more chance for conflict as the Trail expands into populated areas. We should be on board together. We both want good trails. We like the same areas. We’re all SOL if development or a land-use plan closes an area.
Careful biking the Trail. Some parts aren’t worth it unless you’ve got a coupon for free surgery.

Nick,
Not be a bugger, but please do NOT bike the SHT anywhere, as it is a foot only trail and doing this will only make us look bad to all the people who manage trail access.

I agree. I never ride the SHT, only hike it.
