I'm getting a bit of vibration and squeaking in the pedal/bottom bracket area when I'm using the pedals
After a bit of frolicking around the internet I think that I have a loose bottom bracket.
Can anyone tell me how I can check if this is the problem, and what I can do about it!
Is it easy to tighten it at home, or is it something that should definitely be taken into a bike mechanic?
Thanks :)

Try testing the symptoms in and out of saddle pedaling. If consistent, take to your LBS for diagnostics. If you know you way around bikes (not hard) you could easily replace the BB yourself (happy to help).
Describe the bike, age and symptoms in a little more detail.

could also be simply a loose crankarm or just some dirt/grunge between the crankarm and the BB spindles. may not be necessary to replace the entire BB.

lol the other day i thought my bottom bracket was loose, took it to the bike shop because i am lazy like that sometimes, and they were like oh actually just tighten both sides of your cranks and that should do it. and it did. so try that first, and avoid feeling stupid for not tightening bolts that you should have tightened.
good luck, jeff

did they clean and grease your spindles? that is the key to keep your cranks from coming loose in the future. if they just tightened them the dirt and grit that is in there can cause premature ware and ruin your BB spindles and crank arms. same goes when tightening your BB.

DO NOT GREASE A SQUARE SPINDLE BB WHERE THE ARMS GO ON, only splined types.

...unless you want to oversize the taper on your crank.
