I know that MORC doesn't have a trail map of the mtn bike trails at Memorial park...does anyone else know of a place that there may be one?

actually... if you click on "trail guide" at the top right of the page then southern mn trails and memorial, you can get a good idea of where the trails start and there is a general map. but you will have to keep your eyes peeled for some newer singletrack. it is pretty easy to get around up there though.

Jennie,

The map that was just linked isn't the most up-to-date, but will let you hit all the singletrack if you keep your eyes peeled just a little.

We tend to park in a different spot than highlighted in the trail review. When you drive up the bluff, on the south side of it the road splits. You'll want to take the road to the right. We always park right after the split at the little parking spot/overlook. You can then just head down the road for maybe 100 yards and look for a little spur of singletrack off of the pavement on your right. Once up in the clearing look to your left in the little chunk of woods and you should see the singletrack. Follow it around and you should be able to hit everything.

Like Ryan said, we're usually pretty happy to show people around, so if you're looking for a guide post up here and someone might be able to lead the way.

just a note we are bass akwards in this neck of the woods and generally ride clockwise so when you are riding up the entrance trail from the blacktop and it splits take the left trail upwards.

or just bring someone whose ridden before. We need at least one more good sized group to road trip down from the cities before the snowflies.

Would you guys like to update your trail information in the online trail guide? Would be fun to have a new map, pictures and perhaps some better text? Its been years since we wrote that one...

I have a GPS map of almost all of the the Trails at Memorial, However the Data available for that area is really really bad unlike my map for Mammoth.

I am 80% finished with a nice set of maps for Memorial. I am working on trying to have a few maps for the different loop options. It should include all of the new trails, the double track, heck.. even the down hill. I just got my GPS so I am learning as I go, but I hope to have it done a week or two.
As soon as I am close to done I will stick them on a web server so folks can download them and help me hone them.

Larry,

What are you overlaying the plots onto? The data I was able to get for Google Earth and Terraserver was very poor quality starting right at the trailhead. everything west of there, i.e. the Disc Golf Course, etc was nice clear and same detail as the Metro trails. East of the trailhead you could barely tell the river from the bluffs.

They are satalite pics. Google Earth and newer terra server images are crap for the eastern side of the hill, you are right. I found older images that although slightly out of date, are very adequate and are quite clear.

I think I'll volunteer to do the text for an updated write-up, I'm not a real word-smith but I'm afraid what we might come up with if Gus decides to jump in.

I'm getting kinda excited to see Larry's map...

Ok. I have a beta site for these maps. The navigation is crude and the pics are still in progress, but they are available.
http://myaccount.redwingsoftware.com/mainpage.htm
This is a temporary home while I work on them, so this link will become worthless after some time.
Note: I am working on the small links and the "big" links are for 13M bitmap files so if you are in the world of dial-up... you might want to just imagine them.
please also note the address must include the page name (mainpage.htm) and the server is not www.

Let me know how I can make them better.

HOLY CRAP! I've got cable (the medium speed) and the FullMonte Expert loop took a while to load up. Looks brilliant though! You can almost see your house too.

I have no real tips to offer you. Once the full trail map is up, we should go and take pictures of defining features on each section and have the pictures pop up with a link or something. Wouldn't that be freakishly complicated.

The only thing I'd actually change would be to get the files a bit smaller, but I'm guessing you'll be trying that sometime somewhere....

Maybe see you tonight.

I trimmed them down a bit. They lose a bit of clarity, but I think they are still quite useable.

Larry - Nice job on those maps. They look really good.

Issac - bite me.

Issac - bite me.

:p

Seriously though... I'm digging the maps. Once the overall map is complete we'll have to see about getting something (a sort of pamphlet) printed up and maybe get some in the shop... maybe have trailwork info on the back...

One thing I just thought of... maybe having some sort of line "font" for doubletrack, intermediate singletrack, and expert singletrack?

Larry, the state of MN has satelite photos at http://geoserver.state.mn.us/raster2/ that you can download. I download them as JPGs. They are color and I think they are from around 2003.

Isaac, I assume, by font, you mean like a dashed line for single and solid for double ? I will give that a go
I experimented with line weights, but it was do difficult to distinguish in some situations.

Scott, I took a look at that site. Those are a definite step up, thanks. I will work on using some of those for the base picture.

Larry, Could the lines of the trail also be color coded in the same manner as the national ski color code? I.E. green, blue, black.

Gus

They sure could be. The downside is blue and green print almost identical on a b&w printer. And both blend in with the dark grey background on b&w.

If I did that, it would have to be on a white background line, or have a b&w version and a color version.

With the new color sat pics that Scott pointed out, a nice color map would be the way to go and maybe a backup grayscale map for b&w printers.

The server that hosted these files is no longer up. I will try to get them on a more permant location before next spring.
