I was riding west bound on the greenway last night about 7:30 and I was nearing the 2nd Ave/35W bridges and I noticed big debris flying over the edge of the bridge and as I got closer I saw three kids (7-10 years old) throwing beer bottles at bike riders on the path. They missed one guy by like 5 inches. They finished tossing bottles and took off laughing. Why are you having kids if you can't raise them properly? That's a whole other discussion I guess. Anyway we called 911 but we know those kids will never get caught. We cleaned up as much glass as possible. They actually threw a 12 pack full of bottles over, but it missed the path, that could have really injured someone. Anyway, keep your eyes peeled for flying bottles! Another good reason to wear your helmet!

that is why they shouldn't put bike paths through trailer parks....

(I would like to apoligize to anyone that is offended by unfair generalizations made in this remark)

As for the kids comment, remember with this attitude, when we all get old and die, the trails will all be paved over with roads. Kids are the future to keeping the earth healthy. Just like a few bad bikers can spoil our image as a whole, so can a few bad kids.

I'm actually amazed how nice the trail is and how well taken care of it is in some of the neighborhoods it goes through. I know it's not just the city taking care of it, the neighborhood people plant gardens and other people ride through with brooms to sweep up broken glass. I would like to thank anyone who volunteers to make the trail what it is! Except for the isolated incident, it's a cool ride!

Kids also are the key to paying off the 3 trillion dollar debt this war has caused.

And the "bad bikers" now-a-days are considered free riders.:p
haha jk, just dissed myself.

Agreed! It's great to see such diverse neighborhoods come together to make this trail happen. The segment from Hiawatha to the river is almost done and ready to open, and in the next couple years, we might get ped/bike only bridge to Saint Paul!

The Greenway–as well as the Commuter Trail into downtown–can be an adventure. A friend of mine actually saw a group of guys leading another guy who was blindfolded down a hill and over the railroad tracks. At about 6:45 a.m. I'm guessing it wasn't his bachelor party. Mornings aren't usually too sketchy, but evenings can be interesting. The number of people in various states of sobriety and attending to business at various levels of legality definitely goes up with the onset of darkness.

That said, the best parts of my day are hitting that trail, putting my head down and cranking for a few miles. No cars to worry about and the pavement's in great conditions (when it's sans broken glass).

I appreciate the heads-up on the bridges, though. Can't say I'm surprised. Kids don't tend to think of things in terms of consequences. Wasn't there an incident in Wisconsin a few years back, in which a couple kids dropped a rock off of a highway overpass that shattered a guy's windshield, his jaw and his skull? Ugly.

thanks for the heads up. stupid kids, i misbehaved as a youth but never did anything like this. if this continues i think we should ask the community/city to install plastic "walls" to make it harder for people to drop things on the path.

Last year about this time this same trail system, particulllarly over by the Cedar Lake trail by 394/Kenwood neighborhood, had groups of kids attacking bikers.

Keep on your guard! Bike defensively and if you need to throw an elbow every once in awhile to keep it real then do it.
