Hey all you Afton 24hr racers, get out and pre-ride the course. The course is in great shape. Rode it last night and all is fine. Some minor trail work will happen before the race, but no major changes. Good luck to all the riders.

I second that, the trail could use a bit of riding especially on the new sections.

Are there "B" routes like last year?

I rode it today and it was in great shape, does the 24 hour corse include everything?
Also, theres a beehive somewhere in the first part of singletrack, little bastards got me on the leg and wrist, hard to swat them when you're moving.

I talked to one of the employees at the chalet and he told me every trail that has an orange arrow is going to part of the race. The yellow ones are alternate routes that should be avoided.

No alternative routes this year (except technical rockclimb at top of Shady)... Working with the race directors to keep things simple... There will be back-up routes for some of the technical sections in case of weather issues...
Like the Magician said, get out and ride. There are a few new short singletrack sections that still need some tread... Oh yeah, the new sandpit option at the Meadows Chalet... Tribute to the River Bottoms...
There may be a couple of slight re-routes yet to be cut (ValleyView Drop bypass), and the chicane at the base of mid-mtn crossing/ in front of Alps Chalet needs to be shaped a bit more for flow...
Thanks for the beehive pointer... Where exactly did you notice it? By the Meadows Chalet (24 Hr headquarters)?

I rode the trail with Mike on Sunday and can confirm the bees being around the ski trails that face the Meadows and Main chalet, in one of the wooded sections between the ski runs and fairly close to the top of the hill and early on in the trail when starting from the parking lot on the top of the hill. Mike did get attacked but they didn't touch me...lucky I guess. The trail is fun and in pretty good condition. It was suprisingly my first time there and I enjoyed it. I hated the climbs but I always hate climbs and that is part of mtn. biking. Can't wait for the 24hr race. I'll probably go this weekend again to do more recon. Good work by the trail builders:etard:

Well I am allergic to the little bastards, so any attempt to rid them of the course before the 24hr would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know if I am allergic, is there any anti-bee spray? ;)

I've been stung about 30 times this year - never crash into a hollow log with a wasp's nest in it. This spring the first sting was no worse than a mosquito bite, my last sting gave my a huge, itchy, lumpy rash over half my belly, I'm kind of worried that the next sting will lead to anaphylactic shock.
Anyway, I don't think a spray repellent would work, they're stinging to protect their territory, not because they want anything from you. And if you're allergic I think the only recourse is the epinepherine shot. I used to ride and race with a guy who had a custom braze-on so he could attach a syringe container onto his bike, I wonder how that would fly these days.

I think the 2nd sting is the one that would tell you if you were allergic or not, so I think you are safe....

A local reaction to a bee sting is common. A large local reaction may be an indication of hypersensitivity. Added exposure and especially a large single exposure such as multiple stings increase your risk of developing an allergic reaction. I would talk to a doctor as each incident may pose a greater risk. I doubt that the next sting will take you out though.

Back to point-
-Valley View Singletrack is back in... A new bench cut reroute avoiding the lefthand turn drop... Thanks to John & Afton for finding this line... Great reroute to keep the trail in...
-S-Turn chicanes at base of Mid Mtn (Front of Alps Chalet), still need to shape the roller turns a bit for flow... Goal is minimal braking or flow...
-Shady Lane- Reroute of climb at base complete. Upper climb needs some strategic rock placement to keep people honest (off the grass on the dirt).
-Afton Gully- Minor armoring complete and random coax cable buried...
-Doug's Line- New section cut courtesy of LCR captain Doug Larsen. Nice wooded off camber, rock armor... Real short but sweet. Located in Birchwood area. Look for the red arrow pointing right into the trees right after a short climb up a knoll... Reroute takes away a real minor fall line drop.
You still have a week to taste the pain to come on the 25th...

All my earlier comments were tongue-in-cheek, yanking yer chains, not to be taken seriously. In all honesty, even though this trail whups my butt, and I walk a good deal of it, I wouldn't want a thing changed. If I want boring I'll ride up and down my driveway.

Just want to send a thanks out to the following people for there help getting the trail dialed in for the race...
First and foremost John Reents. Even though John refuses to ride, he has an eye for the line... John's help and support to the MTB'ers is second to none... Thanks also to John's supporting cast of helpers (Paul & Nathan)...
Second my LCR sisters Magic "the Game", Doug Larsen, Dave Stoen(er), Pete Stock aka The one and the only true "Goat", Paul Haberman (Former X President of Team Ricoh), Jack Donovan "arrrggg", for pitching in and giving us a hand at Afton even though a few of them claim that they don't do trail work...
Thanks also goes out to all the Morc leaders, Troy Lawrence, Doug Holtz, & Scott Thayer among the named... Great job pulling off a great 25 Hours of fun... That courtesy food was great!!!
Okay, now that this is over, wonder if we can get across Doug's new section with some sort of boardwalk prior to the summit? There is a new section cut but couldn't include for the race because we didn't have a structure to get over some water pipes...
Any carpenters out there want to build a boardwalk in the next month?
