I am building a new wheelset and was looking for some imput on the components. I am going with the Chris King classic hubs and DT Swiss XR 4.1 rims but am stuck on the spokes to use.
Has anyone riden DT Swiss Spokes?
Revolutions, Competitions, or New Aero Speeds?
Are copper nipples better than aluminum?
Any other wheel building advice is welcome...

Black Comps be my favorite. Brass Nips.

Ive also used some of the Alloy nips, and found that as long as the rim has eyelets all the way through they work just as well. But then again I only used em for the colour  and I'm not that hard on 3x wheels of any sort.

Comps/brass fit most riders just fine...even fat chuds like me. If you're light like Nigel you can get away with murder when it comes to spokes. Go crazy if you want.

I used to change my alloy nipples for the season. December I'd use a alternating green and red, july I'd use a red/blue combo. October it was black and orange.
I gave it up because it just became to much work changing them all the time.

I'm liking the idea of the brass nips, are the competitions worth the weight? Or can I get away with a lighter spoke, being a smaller rider?

What do you weigh and what/how do you ride - SS, FS, smooth, basher, etc.?

You can go lighter if you're a smaller rider but I find Champions to be an easy build and don't bind up as much as the Revo's do.

I weigh 165 ish and tend to chew up my tires which I run lower psi on for traction. I would like a bulletproof wheel, but also want to be a bit of a weight weenie if I can.:etard:

I'd go with DT Competition and use brass nipples. Go with a lighter weight tube/tire combination if you can. You are only going to save 45 grams by going with alloy nipples. C'mon 45g...

Agreed go with the DT Comps. as for nips brass or alloy will be fine for your weight, but if your after a more bullet proof wheel then stick to brass and forget about it.
Once you have them built up or laced up if you would like you could test them my semi-homegrown truing stand to see how close they are. Well at least down to 0.0005" of an inch.

45 grams is a huge deal at the outside of the wheel and there is no draw back to alloy nipples if you know how to build a wheel and maintain it properly.
I have heard good things about Sapim spokes but I have never had a chance to use them.

Sure it is. Especially when there is absolutely no reason to add 45 grams by using brass nipples. Brass nipples offer no advantage to xc wheels with eyelets on the rim.

until a ham fist like Soupboy rounds off an alloy trying to true it.....:p

I absolutely agree with you Pete. Alloy nips are the way to go. I have never once had a problem in 12 years of wheel building.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but...
1) What do you think about store bought wheelsets?
2) Does Nipples at the hub do anything for ya?

"Store Boughts" are great, I could've bought the DT Swiss wheelset but I really wanted the Chris King Hubs!

so does that mean all my whole colection of DT spokes from the '90s is more valuable? Sadly, few of them are butted.
